Q.1) Do you think films can be studied as historical documents which provide an
insight into the societies which made and watched them? Critically analyse.
ANS =>
In my opinion, the cinematic industry provides rich material for studying history, but they
require complex interpretation, research, and analysis. These investigations require moving
beyond the visual evidence on the screen to know how experts and fans reviewed and
understood films. Moreover, historians need to explore the actual process of filmmaking and
several viewpoints involved in the production process. Coming to the role of historical
documents revealing an image of the societies that produce films. I think when movies are
researched by experts and fans, they can show a lot about the school of thoughts of the
producers and directors that made the movie and their opinions. As the whole story and plot
of the films is solely based on their mindsets. Therefore, when films are studied subject to
historical means, they for sure conclude an idea of the societies that made and watched them.
Q.2) Who are the film’s main protagonists and antagonists? How and why do you
think partition affected the lives of these protagonists/antagonists in the movie? How
ANS =>
The movie goes on from protagonists and antagonists turning into one another, as well as,
serving as both simultaneously. So, it is a very subjective topic and has a list of nice and
evil people. I will be focusing on the main ones to keep my response brief. I personally
think, one character (Hassan) had managed to maintain a single character of being a
protagonist throughout the movie. As, he never failed to consist of good qualities and
manners. Whereas Dil Navaz, famous for being the “Ice Candy Man” first appeared as a
generous and caring person but ended up as a traitor to his friends and the whole non-
muslim society. Which clearly makes him the main antagonist of the movie.
