Experiment #: 11
Date: December 6,2022
Title:
Aim:
Apparatus: 3 100 cm3 measuring cylinders, 3 funnels, loam, clay soil, sandy
soil, 3 cotton wool, water, petri dish, scale
Method: see textbook
Observation:
Result:
TABLE SHOWING THE DIFFERENT VOLUMES OF WATER
RETAINED BY THREE SOILS OF VARYING TYPES
Soil Type Initial vol. of Final volume of Volume of water
water (ml) water (ml) retained (ml)
Clay 100 80 20
Sand 100 90 10
Loam 100 85 15

Discussion: * Define soils (and the three types) and why they are important(one
– two sentences)
Talk about the small air spaces and particle size of the soils (clay- small)
(sand-large) (loam- intermediate size)
Talk about what the particle sizes has to do with
Sources of Error/Limitation:
1. The cottons were different sizes
2. Soil type was labeled incorrectly
3. Water was measured incorrectly

Conclusion: Was the aim carried out effectively and what made you assume
this?
Reflection: Talk about farming and soils roles in producing certain crops etc
