CASE 3: Glaiza comes into the project manager’s office very upset and insists that one

of the other project team members, Marckben, is creating very bad vibes on the team
and must be taken off this project. Marckben knows his stuff and his work quality is very
good. However, the abrasive way he delivers his frequent unsolicited technical input
and feedback to others is creating friction on the team and distracting them form what
they must do. “He should go, or be transfer to another team”, Glaiza insists, “immediately!”. As
Celso the project manager listens to Glaiza’s complaint, it occurs to
him that he has no other work for Marckben to do if he is taken off this project. However,
Marckben’s project deliverables have been highly praised by the project’s sponsor.
What should Celso as the project manager do?

Answer:
Celso as a project manager should understand their motivation for their behavior and what
motivates them to work is a good place to start, especially if you notice discrepancies in their
behavior. A team member with a negative attitude can destroy your project team from the
inside out. Think of the resentment from other people at the fact they have to do that person’s
work. Celso should listen to his team but never remove someone because of the bad attitude,
confrontation is better than removing someone in a project that they wanted to be involved in.
A good pep talk would be a great way to start talking and discussing about what is happening
inside the team members, talking to Marckben would be a great start for his attitude
improvement, maybe Marckben is just thinking about something that has been affecting his
mental health and that lead towards his behavior. Being a project manager doesn’t mean you
can just remove someone if he/she isn’t performing or bringing bad vibes to the team, being a
leader is a must and a leader always finds his way to lead his team towards victory and success,
removing is not going to solve anything.

"Negativity is an addiction to the bleak shadow that lingers around every

human form--you can transfigure negativity by turning it toward the light of
your soul." -- John O'Donohue
