Writing Debate Test 01

Solution

1. For the Motion

Honourable judges, my worthy opponents and dear students,

Today, I Meena of class XII, will speak in favour of the motion, ‘Government’s ban on dissection of animals in
laboratories is justified.’

I am sure many of you have pets in your homes. The fact that animals too have feelings, just as human beings do, is not
unknown to anyone.

Do they not respond to feelings of affection or even when they are reprimanded for some wrong action on their part?
Why then would someone want to kill animals without any fault of theirs? My opponents will say that it is required for
the purpose of research. Well, we are living in the most technologically-advanced century ever; thus, the research can be
carried out by using modern technology and without dissecting animals.

My honourable opponents will surely point out that this is a part of education, especially for the science students to
practically observe what they have been taught in theory. But in my opinion, this can be done by providing models of
suitable cross-sections of the insides of the animals. Such models can be made by commercial organisations for sale to
educational institutions. This will also prevent repetition of such killing and dissection in future. Hence, it is my earnest
appeal to ban the use of animals in laboratories for the purpose of dissection.

Thank you!

Against the Motion

Honourable judges, my worthy opponents and dear students,

Today, I Meena of class XII, will express my views against the motion, ‘Government’s ban on dissection of animals in
laboratories is justified.’

Students need to be provided a practical experience for the theoretical knowledge gained by them through books. And
the dissection of animals in the school laboratories is merely a part of the same. The students procure an opportunity to
actually put their learning into practice. It should not be looked at as an unjust practice, because such an activity is meant
to develop the student’s knowledge of the elements and functions of the living beings. The students don't kill and sell the
animals or do any other illegal thing. They are not taught anything immoral. They simply get a practical experience
regarding what they learn in class.

The dissection of animals has a scientific purpose. It is a mode of hands-on education for students so that they can learn
beyond the pages of the textbook and actually look at what they are taught. We should give more credit to the sensitivity
and intelligence of our students and not believe that a dissection class will make them more prone to animal violence.

Students should be taught the value of animal life by making them understand how an animal has the same kind of
organs as human beings do and perform similar functions. The governing philosophy behind teaching students to dissect
animals should be that life, whether human or animal, is the same; each living being is tied to the other by its inner
similarity.

Thus, a ban on dissection of animals in school laboratories would not be the best course of action in such a case. I hope
my views on this topic were substantial enough to throw a light on this topic.

Thank you!

2. For the Motion

Respected judges, honorable opponents and friends,

I will speak for the motion, “Private cars should be banned in the congested commercial areas of the cities.’’

The commercial areas of the cities are prone to traffic jams during working hours. This causes problems like incidents of
road rage, increase of pollution due to vehicle exhausts, wastage of precious time and congestion etc. Thus, I am in
favour of private cars being banned from entering such areas.

Most private cars emit carbon dioxide, various nitrogen oxides and particulate matter from their exhausts as they run on
petrol or diesel. These emissions, besides being hazardous to human health, contribute to global warming also. The
continuous honking in these areas due to the jams leads to noise pollution. Vehicles of traders as well as their customers
occupy the limited parking space in such areas, leading to illicit parking also. This leads to further traffic jams. If private
cars are banned from entering commercial complexes, their lands can be put to better use e.g. opening more shops or
food outlets for visitors etc.

Thank you!

Against the Motion

Respected judges, honorable opponents and friends,

I will speak against the motion, “Private cars should be banned in the congested commercial areas of the cities"

Our public transport system in cities is not efficient enough to satisfy the needs of the daily commuters in the cities.
Freedom of travelling is inhibited when one is at the mercy of public vehicles. Public vehicles have their stops fixed
and times of arrival and departure scheduled in way that may not meet the needs of all the commuters. Thus, I am not in
favour of banning private cars from entering the congested commercial areas.

Moreover, if traders and their customers use taxis or autos, it will become a very costly affair. Therefore, trade and
business will suffer. Retail prices will increase, causing difficulties for the common man.

Thus, both business and the economy will be adversely affected due to such a measure, which we cannot afford. So
government should think over some other strategy to overcome the problem of pollution like odd-even rule, which was
tried earlier with limited success.

Thus, our economy will blossom and environmental pollution can be contained without putting a ban on cars being plied
in congested commercial areas.

Thank you!

4. Every time a ton of paper is recycled, 17 trees, 79 gallons of oil, 7,000 gallons of water, 41,000 kilowatts of energy, and
3 cubic yards of landfill space are saved (Fullerton, 2007). Every living creature on this planet depends on raw materials
extracted from the earth. If we continue to take resources from the earth at a faster rate than they can be produced
naturally, we will not survive. It is necessary that we conserve the earth’s resources by recycling our waste so that we can
provide a healthy environment for our offspring to inhabit. Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste
into valuable resources. It yields environmental, financial, and social returns in natural resource conservation, energy
conservation, pollution prevention, and economic expansion and competitiveness.

As a nation, we produce an unthinkable amount of municipal trash. Our current rate of 250 million tons per year could
fill a convoy of 10-ton trash trucks nearly 90,000 miles long—enough to circle the equator nearly eight times! (Glenn,
1998). In 2010, the average American generated 4.3 pounds of municipal solid waste every day (epa.gov, 2013). To
make matters worse, the amount of refuse generated in the United States is projected to increase by about 16% by the
year 2016 (Glenn, 1998). There are environmental concerns associated with excessive waste generation including large
scale greenhouse gas emissions and the poisoning of groundwater.

5. For the Motion

Respected judges, honourable opponents and friends,

I will speak for the motion, “A career counsellor (not you yourself) is the best person to guide you in the choice of a
career.’’

We all are aware about the rising diversity in career options today. I adhere to the fact that career counsellors are the best
people to guide any one in choosing the right career. They play a pivotal role in helping individuals to put their talent,
interest and aptitude to an appropriate use in job selection. Their work is evident, proven and appreciated all over the
world.

A career counsellor has to fulfill many specific duties as a part of his job. He maintains record of each individual student.
He, through his experience and ability, identifies the student’s desires in context of his career that he wishes to pursue
after graduation.

A career counsellor is a person who does immense research before suggesting a job to a student based on his personality,
aptitude and interest. He also normally has connections with various outside agencies which may provide financial aid to
the students, if they need any, while pursing their profession.

A career counsellor is quite sympathetic. He can provide a sympathetic ear to the student to discuss various issues and
also provide moral support to the students if and when they need it.

Thank you!

Against the Motion

Respected Judges, honourable opponents and friends,

I will speak against the motion, “A career counsellor (not you yourself) is the best person to guide you in the choice of a
career".

I do not agree with the statement that a career counsellor is the best person to help a student in making the right decision
while choosing his career. The opinions of the parents, who are already more experienced than the students in decision-
making, and the students' should influence more than those of a career counsellor while choosing a career. All parents
want their children to be happy and successful in life. The right choice of a career will certainly provide happiness and
success. Research in this field has indicated that when children feel supported and loved by their parents, they have more
confidence in their own ability to find a career that suits them. They, therefore, choose a career that will be in their own
interest and provide a livelihood.

An individual should be the best judge of his life and the decisions associated with it. But he can seek guidance from
parents and elders when he needs it. Career counsellors do not know the students properly before they suggest a career
for him, which may ultimately result in failure or unhappiness, or both.

Thank you!
