QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS
1.Molar mass of KMnO4 -158 g
2 Molar mass of Mohrs salt =392g
3 Molar mass of oxalic acid =126g
4. Why we add dil H2 SO+ to Mohrs salt during its preparation
-To prevent hydrolysis of mohrs salt
4. Why we add dil H2 SO+ to conical flask Before titration ?
To provide H+ ions and to make the solution acidic
5. Why titrations involving KMnO4 are carried out in acidic medium?
Titrations involving potassium permanganate are usually carried out in acidic medium.
This is due to higher oxidizing power of permanganate ion in acidic medium than in
neutral or basic medium.
6. Why HCl is not used in permanganometry ?
- HCl is not used because some of the KMnO4 will oxidize chloride ions to chlorine gas.
7. What is a standard solution?
-A solution whose strength is known
8. End point in permanganometry
- Colourless to permanent pink
9. Define Molarity
- Number of moles of solute in 1litre of solution( it depends on temperature)
10 Define Molality
Number of moles of solute in 1 kg of solvent(Independent of temperature)
11. Oxidation -Removal of electrons(Mohr’ssalt and oxalic acid undergo oxidation
12. Reduction –Addition of electrons (KMnO4 undergoes reduction)
13. Rinsing –For removing water molecules stuck inside the burette and pipette
