LAND POLLUTION

INTRODUCTION

Land pollution occurs when trash, compost, and other toxins are dumped on
the land, contaminating or polluting it. Land pollution is caused by human
activities such as littering and waste washed ashore from boats, oil rigs, and
sewage treatment plants.
The degradation of the earth’s land surfaces, both above and below ground
level, is referred to as land pollution. The accumulation of solid and liquid
waste products, which contaminate groundwater and soil, is the cause. The
greater the permeability of the soil, the greater the risk of land contamination.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH

Land pollution has become one of the environmental major health problem
around the globe with its peak in the developing countries. It occurs when
individuals neglect to handle their waste befittingly and leave it to pollute the
land. Progressively, the pollution deteriorates the quality of the land surface
where waste is present causing diseases to humans, animals and reducing the
capacity to support ecosystem and various life forms.

According to the Guardian news media (2019), mismanaged waste causes

hundreds of thousands of people to die each year in the developing world.

CAUSES OF LAND POLLUTION

Land pollution is a major problem around the world and is caused by a variety
of factors. Some of main causes of soil pollution include deforestation and
consequent erosion, agriculture, industry, mining, landfills and illegal dumping
of waste as well as urbanization and construction. Air and water pollution are
often more discernible than soil pollution and evoke a more visceral response,
a revulsion against what can be seen. Land pollution is an equally serious
problem and often also contributes to water pollution through percolating
down to the water tables or erosion runoff into open waters.
