1.7.1. Static stability of aircraft lateral motion.

Statically stable aircraft in lateral motion at action on it of

perturbations tends to restore the balancing position.
A balancing condition of lateral motion is the balance of forces and
moments acting on the aircraft.
At unbalance the aerodynamic moments of roll and yaw
simultaneously arise, the aircraft starts to rotate at once relative to two
axes OY and OX.
It causes complexity of studying of lateral motions in general and
static stability in particular.
Therefore static stability is often considered separately at rotation
relative to OX and OY.

2
Directional stability. Directional (weathercock) stability is
aircraft ability to counteract perturbing influence on yaw
independently being placed on a high-speed flow.

1.7.2. Dynamic stability and quality of transients of the aircraft
lateral motion.

Let’s consider at research of the aircraft free lateral motion, that a

rudder and ailerons are fixed in balancing position.

Attempt to estimate stability of the aircraft lateral motion by the

methods of the automatic control theory with use of the equations
system describing complete lateral motion has certain difficulties.

Therefore it is more expedient to consider separately characteristics

small and the big lateral motion.
