1.3 Basic Hardware Elements - Part II

1
What is an Input Device?
Example:-
Input device is a piece of 1. Mouse
hardware device that allows users 2. Keyboard
to input raw data to the computer 3. Tracker ball
for processing. 4. Scanner
5. Touch Pad
6. Light Pen
7. Joystick
8. Microphone
9. Web cam
10. Digital Camera

2
The Mouse

A mouse is a small handheld input

device that controls a computer screen's
cursor or pointer depending on the way
you move on a flat surface.

3
The Keyboard

Keyboard is a type writer like

device with arrangement of
buttons & keys that allows a
person to enter letters, numbers
& symbols.

4
Tracker ball

It is an upside down of a mouse. The

user rolls the ball with the thumb,
fingers or the palm of the hand to
move a cursor.

Most favored for graphic designers

5
Scanner

It is an input device that reads

an image and converts it into a
digital files.

Ideal to capture Photographs &

Documents

6
Touchpad

A touchpad or trackpad is a
flat control surface used to
move the cursor on the screen.

7
Light Pen

It is a light-sensitive pointing input

device commonly used to select or
otherwise modify text or data on a
screen

Similar to a stylus

8
Joystick

A joystick is an input device

commonly used to control video
games.
Joysticks consist of a base and a
stick that can be moved in any
direction to change the direction of
the cursor.

9
Microphone

An input device that allows

users to input audio into their
computers, also know as Mic

Used for recording Audio for videos,

Online chatting

10
Web Cam

A small digital movie camera (a web cam) mounted on a PC monitor to

allow two-way communication involving not just text communication
but sound and video communication as well.

11
Digital Camera

Photos taken from digital camera are

stored digitally in memory housed within
the camera
They are easily transferred to your computer and
then manipulated within any graphics programs
that you have installed in your computer

12
What is an Output Device?

Output devices receive Example:-

1. Monitor
information from the computer, 2. Projector
and carry data that has been 3. Printer

processed by the computer to 4. Plotter

5. Speaker
the user.

traditional CRT’s
A cathode-ray tube (CRT) is a
large, sealed glass tube
LCD – Liquid Crystal Display

LED – Light Emitting Diode

14
Multimedia Projector

Projection devices that can be attached to

your computer and are useful for
displaying presentations to a group of
people, such as Microsoft PowerPoint

15
Printer
Printers are used to take a hard copy outputs from
the computer.

Laser Printer - Laser printers produce high print

quality at a high speed. They are called “laser
printers” due to the fact that they contain a small
laser within them.

16
Printers

Ink-jet Printer - Inkjet printers are ideal for low

volume printing where high quality print is required
and speed is not a high priority.

Dot matrix printer - work by firing a row of pins

through an ink ribbon onto the paper.

The more pins in the print head higher the quality

of the print, most modern dot matrix printers have
24 pins.
17
Plotter

A plotter is an output device similar to a

printer, but normally allows you to print
larger images.

Used to print Banners & Large

Construction drawings

18
Speaker

It is a device that connects to a

computer to generate sound
output.

19
What is are Input & Output Devices?
Some devices are both input and output devices.
Modem
A modem can be used to download information from web
sites and receive emails. It can also be used for uploading
and sending emails.

Touch screen
Touch screens are used to display menu system (output
device), and accept input when people touch the menus
displayed on the screen. Use in Point of Sale Systems.

20
What is a Storage Device?

Secondary Memory is a Non-Volatile Example:-

(Permanent until erase) Memory 1. Internal Hard Disk

They are available with large amount of 2. External Hard Disk

Memory 3. CD Drive
4. DVD Drive

21
Hard Disks
HDD is a non-volatile memory hardware device that
permanently stores and retrieves data on a
computer.
There are two types of Hard Disks;
• Internal Hard Disk - it resides inside the computer.
Most computers come with a single internal hard
drive, which includes the operating system and pre-
installed applications.

• External Hard Disk - An external hard drive is a

portable storage device that can be attached to a
computer through a USB
