MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY FOR TAMILNADU, PUDUCHERRY AND KARAIKAL


OCTOBER 2022

I. Realised Weather:

Under the influence of setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels
over Bay of Bengal and South Peninsular India, the Northeast Monsoon rains commenced
over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and adjoining areas of south Coastal Andhra
Pradesh on 29th Oct 2022. The Northeast Monsoon further covered remaining parts of Tamil
Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema on
30th Oct 2022.

1. Rainfall:
Southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Tamilnadu on 10th and
active over Tamilnadu on 11th,15th, 16th, 17th and 21st Oct 2022.

(a) Subdivisional rainfall:

During October 2022, rainfall occurred over Tamilnadu at most places


on 10th, 21st; at many places on 09th, 11th, 15th-17th, 20th, 22nd, 30th; at a few
places on 06th, 12th-14th, 18th, 19th, 23rd; at isolated places from 01st-05th, 07th,
08th, 24th–29th& 31st;over Puducherry on 02nd, 05th, 06th, 08th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th,
17th, 19th, 20th, 21st& 23rd; and over Karaikal on 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 30th& 31st
October. Very light rain occurred over Puducherry on 07th, 09th, 28th-31st; and
over Karaikal on 06th, 08th-11th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 21st-24th, & 29th
October. Dry weather prevailed over Puducherry on 01st, 03rd, 04th, 13th, 15th,
16th, 18th, 22nd, 24th-27th; and over Karaikal on 01st-05th, 07th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th
October 2022.

The subdivisional dailyrainfall during the month is depicted in Fig.1

The cumulative rainfall for the Tamilnadu subdivision for the month of
October 2022 was 165.9 mm against the normal of 172.0mm which comes
under normal category (-04%) (Table -1a)

(b) District rainfall scenario:

Out of 40 districts (including Puducherry & Karaikal), 02 districts


received large excess rainfall, 02 districts received –excess rainfall, 21 districts –
normal rainfall and 15 districts – deficient rainfall. (Table-1b & Fig.2).
Erode, Namakkal, Madurai and Tirupathur districts received excess / large
excess rainfall; and Chengalpattu, Chennai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi,
Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, Ranipet, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli,
Tiruvallur, Tiruvarur, Thoothukudi and Vellore districts and Karaikal area
came under deficient category.

(c) Heavy Rainfall Occurrences (past 24-hr rainfall in cm):

Isolated heavy to very heavy rain occurred over Cuddalore district on


10th (Lakkur-14) &on 17th (Kudithangi-13); over Thanjavur district on 10th
(Manjalaru-12); over Sivagangai on 10th (Sivaganga -12) and 15th
(Tirupuvanam-12); over Madurai (Mettupatti-17) and Karur districts
(Panchapatti-12) on 11th; over Dindigul district on 12th (Kodaikanal Boat Club-
13); over Kanyakumari district on 16th (Lower Kothaiyar – 13); over
Coimbatore district on 17th (Valparai PAP – 13) and 18th (Cincona, Valparai
PAP-12 each); and over Theni district on 18th (Periyakulam PTO -13).

Isolated heavy rain occurred over Kanchipuram district on 06thand 10th;


over Ranipet on 06th,09th and10th; over Tiruvallur district on 07thand 10th; over
Tirupathur on 08thand 11th,20th; over Krishnagiri district on 08th,15th,20th; over
Ramanathapuram district on 09th, 14th,20th,21st; over Thanjavur district on
09th,19th,20th; over Virudhunagar district on 09th;13th,15th,18th; over Erode
district on 10th,11th,14th,15th,17th,20th; over Salem district on 10th,11th,17th,20th,;
over Madurai district on 10th, 11th 13th, 15th, 16th 18th,21st,;over Dindigul on
10th,13th,15th,20th; over Namakkal on 10th,12th,14th,17th; overNilgiris on 11th,
19th; over Theni district on 13th,17th; over Thoothukudi district on 13th,27th;
over Kanyakumari district on 14th,17th,18th,19th,25th; over Tiruppur district on
14th,21st,; over Dharmapuri district on 14th,15th,16th,17th; over Tiruchirapalli
districts on 12th,20th; over Pudukottai district on 15th,21st,; over Cuddalore
district on 15th,21st, 29th ,; over Tiruvannamalai district on 15th; over
Perambalur district on 15th; over Nagapattinam district on 16th, 17th; over
Sivagangai district on 16th,21st; over Vellore district on 19th;over Tenkasi
district on 24th; over Coimbatore district on 12th, 15th,20th ,21st;overPuducherry
on 29thOct 2022.

List of heavy rainfall events is given in Table-2.

(d) Station-wise cumulative rainfall:

Cumulative rainfall over various stations in Tamilnadu, Puducherry &


Karaikal during October 2022 is presented in Fig.3. Vadipatti in Madurai
district recorded 54 cm and Chinnakalar in Coimbatore district recorded 47
cm of rain during the month.

2. Temperature:

During the month, generally near normal maximum and minimum


temperatures prevailed over most parts of Tamilnadu, Puducherry &
Karaikal.

The highest maximum temperature recorded during the month was 38.3°C at
Madurai AP on 05th Oct 2022 respectively. The lowest minimum temperature
recorded over the plains of the subdivision was 17.0°C at Dharmapuri on 25 th
Oct; and over the hilly areas, 5.2°C at Uthagamandalam on 27thOct 2022.

(Note:Realised rainfall and temperature descriptions given above are based on the
observations during the past 24 hours ending 08:30 IST of dates mentioned therein.)

II. Chief synoptic features during October’ 2022:

 A Low Pressure Area formed over Westcentral Bay of Bengal &


neighbourhood on 03rd Oct; persisted over Westcentral Bay of Bengal off
Andhra Pradesh coast on 04th October 2022.

 A Depression formed over southeast adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal ,


close to west of Andaman islands on 22nd, and moved northwestward and
intensified into a Deep Depression over Eastcentral and adjoining southwest
bay of Bengal on 23rd, moved nearly northwards and intensified into a
Cyclonic Storm “SITRANG” and lay centered over Westcentral and
adjoining Eastcentral bay at 1200 UTC on 24th ; moved north – northeastwards
and crossed Bangladesh coast between Tinkona and Sandwip close to Barisal
during 1600 UTC and 1800 UTC and moved inland of 24th Oct 2022.

 Last month’s cyclonic circulation over West-central Bay of Bengal off Andhra
Pradesh coast persisted and extended upto 5.1 km above mean sea level
tilting south-westwards with height on 01st Oct; persisted and extended upto
5.8 km above mean sea level tilting south-westwards with height on 02nd, 03rd
and 04th October 2022.

 A cyclonic circulation lay over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & neighbourhood and
extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 05th October 2022; lay over
south coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhood and extended upto 3.1 km
above mean sea level on 6th October 2022.

 Another cyclonic circulation lay over central parts of south Bay of Bengal
between 4.5 km & 5.8 km above mean sea level on 05th October 2022; persisted
over the same region on 06th; persisted and seen between 3.1 km & 5.8 km
above mean sea level on 07th; persisted and seen between 1.5 km & 5.8 km
above mean sea level on 08th; lay over southwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining
north Sri Lanka coast and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 09 th;
Persisted and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 10th Oct 2022.

 A cyclonic circulation lay over north Tamil Nadu & neighbourhood and
extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 10th; over Kerala and
neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 11th; over
Comorin area & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea
level on 12th Oct 2022; persisted over the same region on 13th Oct 2022.

 A cyclonic circulation lay over central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood and
extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 13th; lay over westcentral &
adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea
level tilting southwards with height on 14th; lay over Westcentral and
adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal along and off South Andhra Pradesh &
North Tamilnadu coasts and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on
15th Oct 2022.

 A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea &
adjoining Kerala coast to southwest Bay of Bengal across Kerala and
Tamilnadu and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 16th; Persisted
over the same region on 17th Oct 2022.

 A trough ran from north Andaman Sea& neighbourhood to Tamil Nadu coast
across South Bay of Bengal extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on
18th; persisted over the same region and extended upto 3.1 km above mean
sea level on 19th; ran from the cyclonic circulation associated with the low-
pressure area over north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of south
Andaman Sea & Southeast Bay of Bengal to Tamilnadu coast across South Bay
of Bengal extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 20th ; ran from the
cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area overnorth
Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of south Andaman Sea & Southeast Bay of
Bengal to Southeast Arabian Sea across South Bay of Bengal & Tamilnadu and
extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 21st ; ran from the cyclonic
circulation associated with the Depression over southeast adjoining
Eastcentral Bay of Bengal to Comorin area across South Bay of Bengal & north
Sri Lanka and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 22nd ; ran from
the cyclonic circulation associated with the Deep Depression over Westcentral
& adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal to Comorin area across South Bay of
Bengal & north Sri Lanka and extended upto 7.6 km above mean sea level on
23rd Oct 2022.

 A Cyclonic circulation lay over Westcentral Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood


and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 25th ; lay over Westcentral
& adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal between 1.5 km and 4.5 km above mean
sea level on 26th Oct 2022; lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil
Nadu coast between 1.5 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level on 27th; Persisted
and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 28th; seen over southwest
Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 29th
Oct 2022.
 A trough ran from Southwest Bay of Bengal to South interior Karnataka
across Tamilnadu upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 26th Oct 2022.

 A cyclonic circulation lay over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining
Equatorial north Indian ocean and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea
level on 29th; lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal off south Sri Lanka coast and
extended upto 3.6 km above mean sea level on 30th; lay over southwest Bay of
Bengal off north Sri Lanka coast tilting southwards with height and extended
upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 31st Oct 2022.

 A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal off
north Sri Lanka coast to Southeast Arabian Sea across Tamil Nadu and Kerala
at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 31st; ran from the cyclonic circulation over
north Sri Lanka & neighbourhood to Southeast Arabian Sea across Tamil
Nadu & Kerala and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 31 st Oct
2022.

Large scale features:

Based on the data of various global climate monitoring centres, during


October 2022, La Nina conditions continued over the Equatorial Pacific Ocean. IOD
over the Indian Ocean continued in negative phase during the month. The Madden
Julian Oscillation (MJO) Index was in the western hemisphere (phase 5-7) during the
second to last week of October 2022 and was insignificant during the first week of
the month.
