Sub: Well marked low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal

Yesterday’s Low Pressure Area over south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood lay as a
Well Marked Low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 6th
December 2022. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over
Southeast Bay of Bengal by today (06.12.2022) evening. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to
move west-northwestwards, intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm around 7th
December evening and reach Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry &
adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by 08th December morning. It will continue to move west-
northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts
during subsequent 48 hours.

Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall at most places is very likely over coastal
Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on 8th; heavy
to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over north coastal
Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 09th; rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy
falls at isolated places likely over north Tamilnadu 10th December 2022.

(i) Heavy rainfall warning:

08.12.2022 Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over
Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore,
Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam districts of Tamilnadu, Puducherry
and Karaikal.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ranipet,
Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur,
Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and
Ramanathapuram districts of Tamilnadu.
09.12.2022 Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over
Tiruvallur, Chennai, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu,
Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur,
Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam
districts of Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal; extremely heavy rain
is also likely to occur at one or two places.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Vellore,
Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal,
Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram
districts of Tamilnadu.
10.12.2022 Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over
Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore,
Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts of Tamilnadu.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Krishnagiri,
Dharmapuri, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Kallakurichi and Villupuram
districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry.

Squally wind with speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is
likely to prevail over Southeast Bay of Bengal.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph
is likely to prevail over southwest Bay of Bengal.
07.12.2022 Squally wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is
likely to prevail over Southeast Bay of Bengal.
Squally wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph
is likely to prevail over Southwest Bay of Bengal.

08.12.2022 Gale wind with speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is
likely to prevail over Southwest Bay of Bengal.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is
likely to prevail along and off Tamilnadu-Puducherry coast; wind
speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70
kmph from evening onwards.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is
likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is
likely to prevail over Southeast Bay of Bengal.
Squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is
likely to prevail along-off south Andhra Pradesh coast and north Sri
Lank coast; wind speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60
kmph gusting to 70 kmph from evening onwards.
09.12.2022 Gale wind with speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is
likely to prevail over Southwest Bay of Bengal, along and off
Tamilnadu – Puducherry coasts, south Andhra Pradesh coast and
north Sri Lanka coasts.
Squally wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is
likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar.
10.12.2022 Gale wind with speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is
likely to prevail along and off Tamilnadu-Puducherry coast, south
Andhra Pradesh coast and north Sri Lanka coast; wind speed is
likely to decrease gradually to 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph
from evening onwards.
Squally wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph
is likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar.

(b) over coastal land areas:


08.12.2022 Strong surface wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60
kmph is likely to prevail over coastal areas of Tamilnadu, Puducherry &
Karaikal
09.12.2022 Strong surface wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70
kmph is likely to prevail over northern parts of coastal areas of
Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; wind speed is likely to increase
gradually to gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80
kmph from the evening and continue till 10th morning.
Strong surface wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60
kmph is likely to prevail over southern parts of coastal Tamilnadu.

Andhra Pradesh and Sri rough to very rough on 10th December 2022.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into


 Andaman Sea on 6th December.
 Southeast Bay of Bengal from 06th -07th December.
 Southwest Bay of Bengal from 06th -10th December
 Along & off Sri Lanka coast from 07th -09th December.
 Along & off Tamilnadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh coast and Gulf of Mannar
from 07th -10th December 2022.
Fishermen out in the deep sea are advised to return to coast immediately.

IMD is continuously monitoring the situation and updates would be sent regularly.
