Raw Materials:

1. VPEG - 2400 (Lotte Chemicls): 1800gms

2. Glacial Acrylic Acid (GAA): 243 gms
3. Ferrous Sulphate Hepta Hydrate: 1.02 gms
4. Sodium Hypophosphite (SHP): 36.77gms
5. Hydrogen Peroxide (30%): 20.43gms
6. Safolite: 7.15gms
7. NaOH (30% solution): 190gms
8. Soft water: 1910gms

Procedure:
1. In a clean, dry reactor, equipped with condenser, temperature indicator, addition funnels and
nitrogen inlet, charge 1229 gms of soft water and start agitator. Add slowly 1800 gms VPEG
for one hr. and mix it for 2 hrs at room temp. to make clear solution.
2. Add FeSO4.7H2O solution (FeSO4 7H2O -1.02 gm + water – 10 gms) into the VPEG solution
and mix it for 15 min. to get yellow solution.
3. Add Sodium Hypophosphite solution (SHP – 36.77 gm + water - 65 gm) into the reactor and
mix for 10 min.
4. Add 9.1 gm GAA solution (Solution A) into the reactor, mix for 30 min. and stabilize the temp.
at 21 – 25 deg C. Check the pH of the solution. pH range – 4.2 to 4.8
5. Meanwhile prepare following solutions as follows :
a. Solution A (80%): Prepare solutions of GAA by adding 243 gms of GAA in 61gms of
soft water and mix for 30 min.
b. Solution B: This is a solution of 20.43gms of H2O2 (30%) in 266 gms of soft water.
c. Solution C: This is a solution of 7.15gms of Safolite in 279gms of soft water.
6. After stabilizing the temperature (23 – 25 deg C) of the reactor, start dropwise addition of
remaining solution A and full qty. of B & C into the reactor through three different additions
funnels simultaneously. .Addition of Solution A should be completed within 2.5 hrs. and of
Solution B & C should be completed within 3.0 hrs. Exotherm will be observed during
addition. So, keep temp. below 43 deg C by appropriate cooling during addition. Record the
added qty. of Solution A, B & C in every 30 min. with temp. during addition.
7. Once addition of solution - A, B & C are completed, the reaction mass is maintained at the
highest temp.(40 - 43 deg C) for 2.0 hrs.
8. Add 190 gm of caustic soda lye (30%) for 30 min. and mix it properly.
9. Check the solid content & pH. (Solids: ~ 50%; pH, as such – 5.0 – 7.0).
10. Adjust pH of the product with caustic lye if required
11. Adjust the solid of the product with soft water if required.
12. Analyze the final product as per the following specification.
Specification:
1. Appearance: Colourless to pale yellow coloured liquid
2. Solids: 50.0 ± 1.0
(2gms, 110ºC, 2 hrs)
3. pH (As such) 5.0 – 7.0
4. Viscosity @ 25ºC, cps: 300 - 500
5. Sp. Gr. @ 25ºC: 1.1 ± 0.03
