Health care analytics refers to the use of data and
analytical techniques to identify patterns and trends
that can be used to improve the delivery and
HealthCare effectiveness of health care. This can include
analyzing patient data to identify risk factors for
Sector certain conditions, analyzing the cost and outcomes
of different treatment options, and developing
predictive models to forecast future trends in the
health care industry. Health care analytics can be
used to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and
optimize the allocation of resources within the health
care system.
Types of Data Analytics in
HealthCare Sector
1. Descriptive: This type of analytics involves summarizing and
describing data to understand what has happened in the past. It is
often used to answer questions about historical trends or patterns.
2. Diagnostic: This type of analytics involves drilling down into the data
to understand why something happened. It is often used to identify
root causes of problems or issues.
3. Predictive: This type of analytics involves using data to make
predictions about future outcomes or events. It is often used to
forecast trends or identify potential risks or opportunities.
4. Prescriptive: This type of analytics involves not only making
predictions about the future, but also providing recommendations or
"prescriptions" for how to take action based on those predictions.
Examples of Data
Analytics
One example of data analytics in health care is
the use of predictive modeling to identify patients
at risk of developing certain conditions, such as
diabetes or heart disease. By analyzing patient
data such as age, gender, medical history, and
lifestyle factors, predictive models can identify
patterns and trends that may indicate an
increased risk of certain conditions. This
information can then be used to intervene early
and prevent the onset of these conditions,
improving patient outcomes and potentially
reducing costs.
Another example is the use of data analytics to analyze the cost and effectiveness
of different treatment options for a particular condition. By analyzing data on the
costs and outcomes of different treatments, health care providers can identify the
most cost-effective options and make more informed decisions about how to
allocate resources.

Data analytics can also be used to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the
health care system as a whole. For example, analyzing data on patient flow and
utilization of resources can help identify bottlenecks or inefficiencies and suggest
ways to improve the overall functioning of the system.
Implementation of
analytics
Implementing health care analytics often involves "wrangling" or manipulating large
and complex datasets to make them suitable for analysis. This can involve a variety
of tasks, such as:
1. Data cleaning: Removing errors, inconsistencies, or missing values from the data.
2. Data integration: Combining data from multiple sources or systems to create a
single, comprehensive dataset.
3. Data transformation: Modifying the data to make it more suitable for analysis,
such as by aggregating data or creating new variables.
4. Data visualization: Using graphical techniques to explore and understand the
data.

These tasks can be challenging, especially when working with large

and complex datasets. It may be necessary to use specialized tools
and technologies, such as distributed computing and machine
learning, to efficiently manipulate and analyze the data.
EMR
Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems can
be a valuable resource for health care analytics
because they provide a centralized, digital
repository of patient data. By using EMR data,
analysts can gain a more comprehensive and
up-to-date understanding of patient
populations and the factors that may impact
their health.
EMR systems can also facilitate data sharing and
collaboration among different health care
providers, allowing for more comprehensive
analysis of patient care and outcomes. In
addition, EMR systems often include built-in
analytics tools or can be easily integrated with
external analytics platforms, making it easier to
perform analysis and draw insights from the
data.
However, it is important to note that the quality
and accuracy of the data in EMR systems can
vary, and analysts may need to do additional
data cleaning and validation to ensure the data
is suitable for analysis. In addition, there may be
privacy and security concerns to consider when
working with EMR data.
Benefits of Healthcare Analysis
Improved patient outcomes: By
identifying trends and patterns in
patient data, analysts can identify risk
factors for certain conditions and
intervene early to prevent the onset of
those conditions. This can lead to
improved patient outcomes and
reduced morbidity and mortality rates.
Reduced costs: Data analytics can be
used to identify inefficiencies and waste
in the health care system, and suggest
ways to reduce costs while maintaining
or improving the quality of care.
Improved efficiency: Data analytics can be used to
optimize the allocation of resources within the
health care system, helping providers to make more
informed decisions about how to allocate staff,
equipment, and other resources to meet patient
needs.
Enhanced population health management: By
analyzing data on the health of a population,
analysts can identify trends and patterns that may
suggest opportunities to improve the health of that
population.
Improved decision making: By providing access to
data and analytics tools, health care providers can
make more informed and evidence-based decisions
about patient care and resource allocation.
USE CASES
1.Sisense – Union General Hospital
Sisense is a software company that provides data analytics or
business intelligence tools.Sisense describes how it helped Union
General Hospital, a nonprofit healthcare provided based in Northern
Georgia, reducing data analysis time from a day to five
minutes.Sisense reports that Karen Reff, the hospital’s Manager of
Decision Making Support, handles roughly 20TB of data found within
Excel files and relational database management systems (DBMS).
Examples of data include digital patient charts, EMRs,
and hospital information used to run day-to-day operations.
The hospital’s EMR system did not function optimally, the hospital’s
CFO spent the majority of his time manually crunching data in Excel
and IT resources were limited. The hospital required an efficient
business intelligence solution that was easy for staff to operate.
How the platform helped
The platform is designed to help organizations of all sizes analyze and understand their data, and
make data-driven decisions. Some features of the Sisense BI system include:
