LESSON 1: GOD’S OFFER OF LIFE AND FRIENDSHIP
How did god reveal god self to humankind?
 In Creation - All the things that we see around us are proofs of God’s creation.
 In the Scriptures - God knows the strengths and weaknesses of people.
 In the Church - The Church in the Old testament refers to the chosen people of God, a
community of believers headed by leaders anointed by God.
 In other religions- There are many non-Christian religious and they are fast increasing
number. For some Catholics, their figures are cause of alarm.

LESSON 2: A STORYBOOK OF REVELATION AND FAITH


What is the Bible for you?
The bible did not come straight from heaven. There was no magic or unusual phenomena behind
it.

1ST STAGE:HUMAN EXPERIENCE
- Refers to the encounter of the people with God. It is basically their religious experience
of God as He revealed himself to them either directly or indirectly.
2ND STAGE: ORAL STAGE
-Refers to the times people conveyed by heart their religious experience of God through word of
mouth from one generation to another.
3RD STAGE:WRITTEN STAGE
-From oral tradition these collections of thoughts and understandings recorded by various authors
and formed into separate writing books.
SACRED SCRIPTURES
-Sacred Scripture is the collection of holy and inspired writings officially and solemnly
recognized in the Christian canon. They are written through the instrument of human hands but
authored by God (CCC 105-106).
OLD TESTAMENT - narrates the story between God and his people before Jesus Christ.
Includes not only stories but also God’s teachings that the covenant might be kept faithfully, and
that everyone receives salvation.
NEW TESTAMENT - focuses specially on the new covenant between God and people
established by Jesus Christ.
HOW MANY BOOKS ARE THERE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?
There are 46 books in the Old Testament
WHAT ARE THE BOOKS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?
1. TORAH/PENTATEUNCH - Known as the five books of Moses.
2. HISTORICAL BOOKS - deal with the life and experiences of the Israelites.
3. WISDOM BOOKS/LATER BOOKS - are written by different people in order to deal
with the concerns and problems in life.
4. DEUTEROCANOMINAL BOOKS- Are part of the [greek] Septuagint or Lox, the
Scripture of the Early Christians.
5. PROPHETIC BOOKS- Are written by the prophets.

PROPHETS-Were chosen by God to speak to the people on his behalf.


WHAT ARE THE BOOKS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT?
1. Gospels- Are the apostolic witness to, and interpretation of the words and deeds of Jesus
Christ.
2. Acts of the Apostles- contains an account of the missionary activity and growth of the early
Church.
3. The Epistles of St. Paul-were written by Paul
4. Catholic Epistles-are called by this name because the apostles who wrote these were not sent
to any particular community ad their message was more universal.
5. The Apocalypse or REVELATION- records the ultimate victory of the Kingdom of God. It
is also written to console and the early Christians at a time of persecution.

LESSON 3:FAITH HUMAN RESPONSE TO GOD’S OF FRIENDSHIP


MEANING OF FAITH
-God who is love, freely invites all to friendship with God but does not force anyone to accept
this invitation.
CHARACTERISTICS OF FAITH
– Christian faith is a commitment to God in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Genuine Christian
faith is a “yes” to the offer of friendship by a loving God.
1. An informed communitarian faith it knows and understands what one believes in and its
enriched, supported and lived in a community of believers who are united in love.
2. Missionary and maturing; it grows steadily even in difficult situations as it reaches out to
the others to proclaim the message of salvation to all.
3. Loving faith; love is the reason and call of faith; it gives meaning to one’s beliefs.
4. Enculturated it is rooted in the very identity and way of Filipinos.

CHRISTIAN FAITH IS LIVED OUT THROUGH:


1. Praying and Worshipping- faith is nurtured by a life of prayer personally or as an
community through liturgical services that gather all who believe to worship and praise
God.
2. Witnessing- to be a witness of one’s faith in Jesus is to be obey His commands and
live by the gospel values such as love, goodness, freedom, justice, harmony, and
kindness.
3. Loving Service-care for the needy and the environment is imperative. Deeds of justice
and charity contribute to the transformation of society which is beset by corruption,
cheating and greed.
