THE DESIGN PROCESS OF WOOD COLUMN DESIGN

A compression element with a length greater than the smallest lateral

dimension is known as a column. The word "column" refers to relatively large vertical
elements, whereas "strut" refers to smaller, non-vertical compression components.
The most common type of wood column is the basic solid column, which is made up
of a single sawn piece of wood with a square or rectangular cross section. Simple solid
columns have a circular cross section and are made with poles, which are trimmed but
not sawn tree trunks.

COLUMNS SLENDERNESS PROPORTION

The slenderness ratio of a wood structure in an unsupported simple solid
column with a rectangular section is the ratio of its shear walls (laterally) unbraced
(laterally). It can express it in the ratio of L/d of an unsupported length to the dimension
of its shortest side. (See Figure 6.1a for further information.) L is the length between
the braces that limit deflections in the least dimension.

SIMPLE SOLID COLUMNS' COMPRESSION CAPACITY, ASD METHOD

Compression of a short member, including a wooden block, is restricted by the
mass of the sample and the compressing pressure limit. The elastic bending of a very
long member, such as with a yardstick, is dictated by the rigidity of the member in
bending strength and the material rigidity quality (modulus of elasticity). The behavior
is controlled by a transitional in between two very different reactions, which is why
most wood columns lie between such two poles.
COLUMN LOAD CAPACITY
The fundamental calculation for determining the capacity of a wood column is

Bending occurs when a member is anchored at ends and is restricted from

lateral forces at the ends, with no modifications for bearing circumstances; this is a
frequent issue for wood columns. The NDS provides modified bending lengths
approaches like those used in design considerations.

WOODEN COLUMNS DESIGN

The connections in the column make the column design more complex.
Formulas of the column have allowed stress to be determined by the exact column
dimensions, which were unknown at the start of the design project process.

LRFD METHOD, COLUMN LOAD CAPACITY

The stages for the LRFD approach are substantially the same as those for the
ASD method detailed in the previous sections. The main differences are variations in
values because of various variables.
