Introduction

Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

The tendency to believe that one may achieve their goals with little difficulty

is called optimism. In terms of adopting adaptable coping strategies, optimism

affects one's physical and mental health as well as lowers one's chance of illness.

Pessimism, on the other hand, which is characterized as the anticipation of

unpleasant developments or fresh challenges, stands out.

It has been found that students who are upbeat are more likely to persist in

their studies, foresee the failure of some subjects, and refrain from quitting others.

A psychological dispositional quality known as optimism is even thought to serve

as a bridge between an individual's perception of the world and the world around

them. Furthermore, according to Seligman's (2003) theory, this construct can be

viewed as an individual inclination to assign bad occurrences to particular,

unstable external factors. The inclination to attribute unfavorable events to

internal, stable, and universal sources is defined as pessimism.

The psychological qualities that are defined by inclinations to anticipate

optimistic or bad outcomes in life are referred to as dispositional optimism or

pessimism by certain authors. Academic stress, social support, optimism-

pessimism, and self-esteem are all regarded to be correlated with both optimism *

and pessimism among college students (Carver, Scheier, & Segerstrom, 2010).

Students frequently experience academic stress, according to De la Fuente et

al. (2014). Students may feel academic stress due to a variety of circumstances

such as the pressure of class work and assignments, frequent examinations and

assessments, financial challenges, or how the students' mindset works that

influences the quality of their studies, or any other scenario that hampers their

capacity to achieve academically such as their performance inside the classroom.

Investigating the effect of mentality on academic performance is the goal of

this study. In this study, optimism and pessimism were chosen as variables as part

of a collection of relevant variables for the student's psychological well-being.

Statement of the Problem

Numerous research on optimism and pessimism were carried out, focusing

on the relationship between the two and the academic performance of individuals,

whether the relationship was good or negative. According to the findings of

numerous studies, including those by Abdel Khaleq (2000), Cohen (2000), Al-

Ansari (2003), and Redwan (2000), optimism is positively correlated with a

number of normal (or positive) variables, including mental and physical health,

happiness, life satisfaction, the ability to deal effectively with pressures, problem-

solving skills, high academic performance, extroversion, work motivation, quality *

of the output, and self-control. On the other hand, pessimism is linked to abnormal

pathologic characteristics such sadness, anxiety, worry, and failure to solve

problems.

To obtain all knowledge, data, and information, the research sought to

answer the following questions:

1. The profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Gender

c. Religion

d. Status (full-time student, working student)

2. How does the respondents’ mindset (Optimism and Pessimism) impact

their academic performance?

3.

Hypothesis

As we go about our everyday lives, our own mindset (Optimism-Pessimism) is

part of our environment. Do mindset (Optimism-Pessimism) really have a part of

influencing academic performance or do not? Based on the studies of Abdel

Khaleq (2000), Cohen (2000), Al-Ansari (2003), and Redwan (2000) optimism *

and pessimism have a relevant ties with academic stress and to others also. If a

student have a optimistic mindest it will result for better outcome academically but

if a student is pessimistic it will receive lower academic outcome. l

Significance of the Study

The aim of this study was to investigate the connection between academic

performance and optimism-pessimism among second-year AB Psychology

students at Jesus Reigns Christian College. The study will also benefit the

following sectors:

For Students. This will benefit the students because it can give them information

and they will know the difference between being an optimistic and pessimistic. It

strengthens them to try again and allows their goals and dreams in play so they can

act on the motivation to keep working toward them.

For Parents. Enable them to realize that they have a great role to play in their

child. Parent’s optimism was associated with effective parenting, which in turn,

in the future.

For Teachers.

For Future Researchers. Future researchers may use this research as a reference

and source if they perform research on a similar issue.

For Psychologist/Psychiatrist. Those who is still discovering interesting

concepts. We all know that as psychologists and psychiatrists, we are constantly

open to new learnings and still have a lot to learn. And because it is being held this

year, this topic is highly dependable and up to date (2022).

Scope and Limitation

The main focus of this paper is to primarily gather information in regards with the

Impact of Mindset to Academic Performance. The researchers will conduct a

survey using google form to be answered by the second-year AB Psychology

students that questions related to optimism and pessimism on how it impacts their

academic performances.
