Acronyms in English and in Vietnamese: Contrastive analysis

I) Acronyms in English
Acronyms are words formed from the initial letters or larger parts of words. As a result,
new acronyms are freely produced, especially for names of organizations. People often
create a short word that means the same thing as a much longer phrase (set of words), to
make it faster and shorter to say the long phrase. Acronyms can be recognized as follows:
1) Acronyms pronounced as sequences of letters can be called “alphabetisms”, for
example: (a) the letters represent full words: WHO (World Health Organization); and (b)
the letters represent elements in a compound or just parts of a word: TV (Television).
2) A lot of acronyms are pronounced as words as in “radar” (from “radio detecting
and ranging”)
II) Acronyms in Vietnamese
Acronyms are also words formed: (a) from each smaller part of words as in “Công-Nông-
Binh” (Công nhân-Nông dân- Binh sĩ); and (b) they are pronounced as the borrowings as
in “Vinamilk” (Vietnam milk).
