INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein, social media is a set of applications in a web
platform which can allow the users to share and exchange some information through it.
Researchers argue that the impact of social media relies on the fact that they employ mobile and
web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms via which individuals and
communities share, create and co-create, discuss, and modify usergenerated content. Social
media is a fairly new concept since almost nobody heard or use social media 1015 years ago.
Nevertheless, nowadays websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In have more than 1
billion users and account for almost 25 percent of Internet use.
In learning process of English, people recognize the term Linguistics. Linguistics is the
study of language scientifically. Linguistics consists of some subfields such as Psycholinguistics,
Sociolinguistics, Semantics, Pragmatics, Morphology, Phonology, etc. In this research, the
researcher focuses on morphology. Morphology is the study of the internal structure of words.
Since morphology is the study of the internal structure of words, we recognize the term
word-formation. This topic discusses about phenomenon of acronym, clipping and onomatopoeia
that usually found in Social Media.

B. Purposes
 To fulfill the Lexicogrammar assignment
 To find out and analyze about the use of acronym, clipping and onomatopoeia which is
often used in social media e.g. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. (As a Idea Engineering
task and Mini Research task).
 Give explanation and solution about this phenomenon
.
C. Benefits
 Improve readers understanding of acronym, clipping and onomatopoeia
 Improve readers understanding of acronym, clipping and onomatopoeia which usually
found in Social Media

II.LITERATURE REVIEW
1. ACRONYM
A. What Is Acronym ?
Acronym is word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set
phrase or series of words and pronounced as a separate word, aswac from Women's Army
Corps,OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range
navigation. Acronyms can be used to enhance a phrase or name, a tagline, and a medium for
humor. The use of acronyms has a huge influence on language users.

b. How To Use Acronyms

Technically speaking, you should capitalize all the letters in acronyms, but there are exceptions.
1.Informal Acronyms
Most informal acronyms don’t use all capital letters. When people are texting friends or
using social media, they often write acronyms in lowercase letters because it’s quicker. Some
acronyms, like “taser,” have become so common, they are now considered real words, so they
won’t be capitalized either.

2.Formal Acronyms
When writing in a professional capacity, such as for a school essay or a press release, you
always want to write out the full version of the term when you first mention it. Then you should
indicate the acronym in parentheses immediately afterward. After the first mention, you can use
the acronym throughout the rest of the piece.

C. Example Of Acronym
 AARP - American Association of Retired PersonsI forgot my AARP card.
 DARE - Drug Abuse Resistance EducationThe whole school is doing the DARE
program.
 FEMA - Federal Emergency Management AgencyAfter the hurricane, FEMA helped the
survivors rebuild.
 HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability Accountability ActI can’t give you that information
because of HIPAA.
 HUD - Department of Housing and Urban DevelopmentYou’ll have to go to the HUD
office to get help finding affordable housing.
 NAFTA - North American Free Trade AgreementNAFTA requires the U.S. to follow this
rule.
 NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationWe watched the NASA engineer
explain how a launch works.
 NATO - The North Atlantic Treaty OrganizationLet’s hope NATO always remains intact.
 OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health AdministrationEveryone make sure you wear
your helmets today, we’ve got an OSHA inspection.
 POTUS - President Of The United StatesThe POTUS will be taking Air Force One to the
meeting.
 SEAL - Sea Air Land (U.S. Navy)The SEAL team is taking this mission.
 SNAP - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance ProgramAnyone who qualifies for SNAP
benefits qualifies for this program.

2.CLIPPING
A. What is clipping?
Clipping refers to the reduction of a polysyllabic word by dropping a syllable or more
from it.Clipping is also called truncation or shortening. Clipping is one of the ways new words
are created in English. It involves the shortening of a longer word, often reducing it to one
syllable. Many examples are very informal or slang. Example Maths, which is a clipped form of
mathematics, is an example of this. Informal examples include 'bro' from brother and 'dis' from
disrespect.
B. Types of clipping
There are four types of clipping:

1. Back clipping
In this type the beginning is retained
Examples:

 ad = advertisement
 cable = cablegram

2. Fore-clipping
The final part is retained:
Examples:

 chute = parachute
 coon = raccoon

3. Middle clipping
The middle part is retained.
Example:

 flu = influenza
 fridge = refrigerator

4. Complex clipping
Clipping may also occur in compounds. In complex clipping, one part of the original compound
most often remains intact. But sometimes both halves of a compound are clipped:
Examples:

 cablegram= cable telegram

 op art = optical art

When both halves are clipped, as in navicert, it becomes confusing whether to consider the
resultant formation as clipping or as blending.

3.ANOMOTOPEIA
A.What Is Onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia is a word or group of words that mimic the sounds from the source it
describes. Onomatopoeia (pronounced ˌ’AH-nuh-mah-tuh-PEE-uh’) refers to words whose
pronunciations imitate the sounds they describe. A dog’s bark sounds like “woof,” so “woof” is
an example of onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia can be used to describe the gears of machines
working, the horn of a car honking, animals croaking or barking, or any number of other sounds.
Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech in which words evoke the actual sound of the thing they refer
to or describe. The “boom” of a firework exploding, the “tick tock” of a clock, and the “ding
dong” of a doorbell are all examples of onomatopoeia.
B. Some Additional Key Details About Onomatopoeia:
 Onomatopoeia can use real words, made-up words, or just letters used to represent raw
sounds (as “Zzzzzz” represents someone sleeping or snoring).
 Advertising, branding, and slogans often use onomatopoeia: “Snap, crackle, pop.”
 Onomatopoeia can differ across cultures and languages, even when referring to the same
sound. A dog’s “woof” in English is a dog’s “bau” in Italian (how to say woof in 16
languages).
C. Onomatopoeia Pronunciation
Here's how to pronounce onomatopoeia: on-uh-mat-uh-pee-uh
D. The Four Types of Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia has a few distinct variants:
1. Real words that sound like real things
2. Real words made to evoke the sound of real things
3. Made-up words that sound like real things
4. A series of letters that mimic a “raw” sound

III. METHODOLOGY

This is a descriptive qualitative research. This study attempts to describe the results and
give solutions of acronym, clipping and onomatopoeia in Social Media. To obtain the data, the
researchers used 1 technique of data collection. Researchers used a descriptive analysis, then it
was followed observation.

IV. DISCUSSION AND RESULT

There are some Onomatopeia that usually find in Social Media, namely:
Results : After we researched on several social media such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp,
Twitter and Snapchat, people often use these three types, but as we examined more clearly, we
concluded that acronyms and clipping are the most frequently used in social media by many
person. for example when someone is chatting some acronym words that are often used are like
"BTW, THX, IDK, OTW, HBD AND OMG", if some words are clipping, they are like "BRO,
EXAM, MOVIE, TYPO, PHOTO, AND CONGRATS. We take all of these discussions based on
the data we have examined.
