Lesson 1. Mathematics in the Intermediate Grades

Look Back!
I already studied mathematics for over a decade since I was in grade 1 up to now. I will be listing
at least 5 of my observation about the anxiety of students upon studying mathematics. Here it is.
1. Anxiety of understanding the problems and making or applying appropriate solutions.
2. Anxiety of using appropriate operations and terms in solving problems.
3. Anxiety caused of lacking confidence in solving mathematical problems.
4. Anxiety applying or using formulas in solving problems.
5. Anxiety of remembering the correct formulas in every problem.

Let’s Evaluate.
Elaborate what is the question convey to you. Support your idea by research and experiences.
1. What is the essence of learning mathematics in the intermediate grade level?
The essence of learning mathematics in the intermediate grade level to enhance and
developed our problem solving skills. Students from grade school needed to study and master the
fundamental terms so that when they face some much complex problems in higher grades they can
able to apply those basic skills in math they learned in intermediate grade level.
2. What is the essence of teaching mathematics in the intermediate grade level?
The essence of teaching mathematics in the intermediate grade level is very important
because teaching in primary grade level is not easy to make students acquired early skills in
analyzing problem and supplying efficient solutions on it. Furthermore, it is also provide
opportunities to enhance other skills such as comprehension skills, deductive and inductive
reasoning, and etc.

Ask them

This activity will give you a current level of pupil anxiety in mathematics subject
since students struggle to understand and apply mathematical words and concepts
(Mulwa, 2015). You will be surveying at least five pupils in your community who
is currently enrolled as grades 4, 5, and 6.
What is your methods of selecting your respondents?
The respondents for this survey are my niece and nephews who enrolled in grade 4-
6 at Ilustre Central Elementary School. They are asked if how they defined mathematics?
The following are their respected responses.

How do you describe

PART 1. ASSIGNMENT (FOLLOW UP)

1. What have you learned in the first topic in TMIG?

I have learned in the first topic in TMIG that it is important to learn more about
mathematics in the early stages of our development. It was realized us that learning
mathematics in our primary grades can improve, enhance and developed our decision
making, comprehension, and problem solving skills.
2. How can you apply the things you have learned?
3. What are the significance of learning/ studying it?
