ACTIVATING YOUR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

A. Picture Analysis

Before you start reading this unit, write down your own understanding
of teaching mathematics at the primary level. What must be the nature
and goals of teaching the aforementioned?

Nature of Mathematics:

Mathematics plays an important and special role in education. We might

sometimes get confused why we need to study mathematics, well studying
mathematics simply made me realized how important numbers in our daily
live or in our living. It helps students to think more deeply.
Mathematics provides opportunities for students in developing
important intellectual skills in problem solving, creative thinking
and communication. Mathematics is part of our human heritage, and we
have the responsibility to develop that heritage.

Goals of Mathematics to Education:

The goals of mathematics in education is to let students value the

importance of numbers, let the students understand deeply the
mathematics they will teach in the future. And make the students
realized that we need mathematics in order to live in this society.

B. Fact or Bluff? Identify the following statements if Fact or Bluff.

Use the space provided for your answer.

1. Mathematics offers children a Fact

powerful way of communicating.
2. Mathematics prevents chaos to Fact

3. Through mathematics, students Bluff
can acquire essential skills such
as decision making and solving
mathematical problems but it does
not help us to cope with this
changing world.
4 All people use mathematical Fact
knowledge every day.
5. Mathematics is a spectator Bluff
sport.
ACTIVITY 1

This activity is called the Prior Knowledge, Present Knowledge, and

Gained Knowledge (PPG) where you are to cite all concepts that you
know about the nature of Mathematics. Write all the concepts that you
know about the lesson, and enumerate the insights gained in the
lesson. This will also compare your previous answer on the nature of
Mathematics. Are there similarities in your answer or none?

Activity 2

Based on the goals of mathematics in education discussed in this unit,

cite a classroom scenario to clearly show how each goal can be
achieved.

1. Value Mathematics

A teacher discussed to her students that we always need to study

mathematics because numbers are everywhere. If you want to be
successful someday learning mathematics is a very big help because
mathematics is present in all fields. So the students realized that
they need to value mathematics in order for them to be successful
because there is no student who doesn’t want to be successful in the
future.

2. Reason Mathematically

A teacher asks her students to group their selves and they have a task
to complete the puzzle in 1 minute.

3. Communicate Mathematics

Students comparing theirselves who is the tallest among their group.

4. Solve Problems

A teacher groups his students and gives them a task to solve a

particular problem.

5. Develop confidence

There’s a students who is so much afraid when it comes in mathematics,

but one day his teacher called him and let him solve the problem and
he got the correct answer and the teacher and students compliment him
and from that day he is enjoying mathematics subject and enjoying
solving problem.
Activity 3

Create your own paradigm of the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum based on

the conceptual framework cited by the Department of Education. Your
work will be graded using the following criteria: content, relevance
to the topic, organization, and creativity

ACTIVATING YOUR PRE-KNOWLEDGE

Directions: Read and comprehend each of the questions or statements

below. Choose the appropriate answer. (This is also available in
Google Form for the students to have easy access.)

1. When do we start teaching Mathematics in the K to 12 Curriculum?

A. Kinder B. Grade 1 C. Grade 2 D. Grade 3

2. Among the given principles and theories, which of the following

does not support the Philippines’ Mathematics Curriculum Framework?

A. Experiential Learning B. Cooperative Learning

C. Discovery Learning D. None of the Choices

3. The following are the contents of the K to 10 Mathematics except:

A. Numbers and Number Sense B. Measurement

C. Business Mathematics D. Probability and Statistics

4. In what grade level will you start teaching Algebra?

A. Grade 1 B. Grade 2 C. Grade 3 D. Grade 4

5. When do we start teaching Statistics and Probability?

A. Grade 1 B. Grade 2 C. Grade 3 D. Grade 4

SYNTHESIZING YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Activity 4. Journal Making

Directions: Your task is to make a journal answering the questions

below. You have to write it in cursive in a long bond paper.

1. What are the three most important things that I have learned today?

The 3 most important things I’ve learned today is first that the
purpose of teaching and learning mathematics is understanding. When we
understand, we can remember everything has tackled. Secondly, was the
nature of mathematics. Mathematics can be a big help to each one of us
in any way. It con help students to think more deeply and understand
number, mathematics can also be an art and also a tool which can help
us in the future or even in our presents. It can be a tool that helps
us find job for us to live. And lastly, I’ve learned the goal of
mathematic in education and why mathematics should be taught.
Mathematics should be taught and can’t be rid in education because it
has a very special role. A role that make students better and help
students understand number, and make us realized that mathematics is
not something we should avoid.

2. As a future teacher, what are my realizations about the topics that

have been tackled?

As a future teacher, I realized math is everywhere so we should

consider it as a part of our lives. Math is not just all about solving
problems but it is about letting us realized how important numbers
are. As a future educator, my goal is not just to teach my learners
how to solve problems but I will let them recognized and value
mathematics. And let my learners recognize and understand the role of
mathematics in the world.
3. What are the things that are not yet clear to me about today’s
lesson?

The things that are not yet clear to me is how to teach the learners
and convince them that mathematics is not something they should avoid
when almost all children hates solving problems. How can we possibly
change the mind of our students about what they think mathematics is?

4. State the difference of Mathematics contents and processes from

Grade 1 to 3.

The contents of mathematics include Numbers and Number Sense,

Measurement, Geometry, Patterns and Algebra, and Statistic and
probability. The difference of mathematics contents and processes from
grade 1 to 3 are; Grade 1 the learner demonstrates understanding and
appreciation of key concepts and skills involving whole numbers up to
100, while in grade 2 the learner demonstrates understanding and
appreciation of key concepts and skills involving whole numbers up to
1 000, and in grade 3 the learner demonstrates understanding and
appreciation of key concepts and skills involving whole numbers up to
10 000.

5. Why is it important to know the Mathematics contents and processes

in Grade 1 to 3?
For us teachers, to know what we must teach first to our learners.
Teaching Mathematics to our learners is not easy especially grade 1-3.
We should always do the spiral progression learning, this where we
should teach our students depending on their ability and what they can
do at their age. We should recognize differences of our students
ability.

Activity 5. Teaching Material Making

Directions: After learning the contents and processes of Grades 1 to 3

Mathematics, I will randomly assign you topics in Mathematics and your
task is to make an original teaching material in any form (traditional
or modern) as if you will be teaching students in a particular grade
level with a particular topic. You have to submit six (6)pictures (two
[2] pictures of the materials, two [2] pictures while you are doing
it, and another two [2] pictures of the finished product). Submission
will be through our Facebook Group. Comment down your pictures with
captions on my post “Teaching Material Making.” The deadline for
submission will be discussed by the whole class, especially for those
who do not have access to internet. The criteria for grading your
output will be as follows:

Appropriateness and Correctness – 40%

Physical Appearance – 30%

Resourcefulness – 20%

Timeliness – 10%

Total – 100%
