ASSESSMENT 1

1. Environmental alteration due to excessive application pesticide is one of the serious

topic/problem in agricultural ecology today. As an agriculturist, what can you do to provide a
solution for the aforementioned problem? Cite a published article which can support your
ideas/answers.

 Well for me as an agriculturist, I believe the best solution to the environmental

alteration due to excessive application of pesticide is by reducing the use of pesticides
through Considering non-chemical methods for controlling pests.  using non-chemical
management methods on your lawn and garden, such as introducing beneficial insects
and wild, native plants, or use physical methods, including hand weeding, mulching, or
setting traps, to reduce chemical use outdoors. Beneficial insects, like honey bees, which
help to pollinate gardens, and lady bugs, which prey upon other nuisance pests such as
aphids, can help to improve the health of a yard. Use mechanical traps (snap traps,
sticky traps) and flyswatters inside. Sticky traps can also be used as a tool in identifying
pests or for determining the level of an infestation.
2. Does application of a single pesticide/insecticide in every cropping season have undesirable

effects on target organisms? If yes, lists all possible effects and explain, but if your answer is no,

why?

 For me No, because the question only stated if it has undesirable effects on target
organisms since, the main purpose of pesticide/ insecticide is to help farmers to safely
deter or manage pests such as insects, fungi and weeds that can threaten the health or
quality of their crop. That is to say, that pesticide/ insecticide is purposely design to kill
pests or the target organisms. If the question stated that if it has undesirable effects on
the non-target organisms, then probably my answer would be yes.

3. Application of pesticides/insecticides does have effects on non-target organisms. As an

agriculturist, how can you explain and convince a farmer which is became an independent
relying on pesticides application to minimize or stop using it due to its detrimental effects to
environment, animals and most especially to us, humans? Justify your answer.
 The only thing that I can I do as an agriculturist student is by explaining to farmers that
too much reliance on pesticide is not good not just for the health of humans but also it
is harmful to the environment also to animals. Also, I’ll try to convince them by letting
them watch any videos about the detrimental effects of too much relying on pesticides.
cause pesticide can contaminate soil, water, turf, and other vegetation. In addition to
killing insects or weeds, pesticides can be toxic to a host of other organisms including
birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants. I’ll advise them or try to convince
them in Considering non-chemical methods for controlling pests.  using non-chemical
management methods on your lawn and garden, such as introducing beneficial insects
and wild, native plants, or use physical methods, including hand weeding, mulching, or
setting traps, to reduce chemical use outdoors.
