MAT KILAU 2022 ACTION/DRAMA

For the entertainment part, I have chosen a film inspired by the epic Malaysian historical figure Mat Kilau who fought against the
British colonists in Pahang before independence. The director is Syamsul Yusof who is the youngest director to ever win the Best
Director award at the Malaysian Film Festival at the age of 25.

Kebangkit Pahlawan tells the story of the struggle of Malay fighters, Mat Kilau with his father, Tok Gajah and their friends
who rose up against British colonialism in Malaya, especially in the state of Pahang. The British colonizers who occupied the lands in
Pahang had taken the land belonging to the Malays, and imposed unreasonable taxes. Add to the pain when anyone who resists will be
considered a rebel, and will be arrested, tortured and killed if they don't want to follow the instructions of the British. Due to this
intervention and the increasingly barbaric attitude of the British, Mat Kilau and his friends rose up against the British colonists.
One thing that can be commended about this film is the pace of the film which can be said to be quite fast, and there are no
moments that can disturb the audience's concentration. Conversation scenes are interspersed with beautiful fight scenes. In fact, the
audience's focus seems to have no room to look here and there when watching this film, because scene after scene is woven quite
neatly. The early part of this film also plays an important role, where the appearance of Ellie Suriaty and Mubarak Majid have
succeeded in creating 'spirit' and tempo that is carried until the end of the film. The 'soul' of the audience has been successfully tapped
since the beginning!

Lined up by a cast of great actors and considered seniors is indeed a very good decision from the director. Veteran actors,
combined with new actors who seem to be able to attract fans to the theaters, produce a very worthwhile result. Among the standouts
are of course Adi Putra as Mat Kilau, Beto Kusyairy (who turned out to be brilliant playing the role of Wahid), Fattah Amin (the
character of Awang who was initially annoying and considered a traitor), Johan As'ari, Dato Rahim Razali, Dato Jalaluddin Hassan
and Wan Hanafi Su, as well as featuring an Indonesian actor who made a name for himself in Hollywood, namely Yayan Ruhian.

For the movement of the fighting action and silat choreography, it was visualized quite well. We believe that many young
people will be captivated by the movement of martial arts in this film, and it is not impossible that some will be interested in learning
the art of martial arts after watching this film.

This film apparently dares to give a 'spicy' warning to the Malays, not to be greedy, self-centred, always stick to faith and piety
to God. In addition, he also sneered at the Malays who became the colonialists' bait, so willing to trample on their own nation to
protect their own interests. Yes, it was very good, and got a 'slap' on the face of the audience. But the spoken dialogue is like a
sentence 'straight from the book' and repetitive, and to some extent it makes it unnatural.
The audience of this film should already be able to understand that this film is not a film 100% of Mat Kilau's life story, but is
only inspired by the story of the struggle of Mat Kilau and his friends.
