TREATMENT.

The Heart On
The Left.
TITLE:
 The title of our film will be, The Heart of the left. This will
connote the themes and contents of this film because it
shows how Aaron our main character believes in left wing
politics, also the small fact that your heart is on the left
side.
 This title is conventional to the British Social Realism genre
because it is telling the audience right away what this film
will be about although the audience may not see this. Other
films have done this for example The Full Monty, which is
also by Film Four who is the institution for this task, was all
about a group of men stripping for money and wanting to go
the full monty.
 I think this will appeal well to my audience as most people
from lower class believe in left wing politics and are in the
same situation for fighting for what they believe in.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
 Age: 16-24. The brief given tells us this is the target audience they
want.
Gender: Male
Interests: Politics and society. This is due to the main themes in the
film and will relate to my audience well.
Class: Lower Working class/Working class. This is because the
protagonist and main characters are from this class.
Ethnicity: White Caucasian. This is because the main character is of
this ethnicity and the audience can relate to him.
 The film will appeal to this audience type as the film is based around
a young, white, male living in a lower working class society and trying
to find ways of making his future better. This would be very relatable
to the target audience as they may be in similar situations. For
example, the film looks at the current student protests, this would be
important to the target audience as it is a real event that will most
likely be effecting them now. Also, it will appeal to this audience as
it has a unique selling point: No other current film is about student
protests.
TECHNOLOGY:
 We will use technology in order to make our film
go against different conventions. We will use
mobile phone footage, green screen to create
different backgrounds and also fast forward motion
and to slow things down.
 This helps show the audience a state of mind and
make it seam more real and fit in to the genre of
British social realism.
 The limitations of using these different equipments
is that they will take a long time to use and we will
also have to find the correct equipment in order to
make it seam more realistic.
REPRESENTATION:
 The key characters in this film will be, Aaron who will
be shown as the protagonist and the government who
will be shown as the antagonist.
 I have applied Propp’s character types into my ideas,
there will be a Father type character who will be
Aarons father who encourages him and is proud of him.
There will be a Helper who are friends of the
protagonists who will be extra protesters and also who
will help him along and through different situations.
 These characters will challenge stereotypes and also
typical representations of groups in society. For
example teenagers will be shown as actually caring for
themselves and planning on what they want to do in
their future and taking responsibility.
NARRATIVE:
 Brief summary of the film: The protagonist in the film is Aaron, a 16 year
old from East London who is from a lower working class background. Aaron
has had it with the government and wants to make a change, through
student protests against the rise in university tuition fees. However, Aaron
must deal with the consequence of his actions after taking the law into his
own hands.

 Summary of the opening sequence:

(1) Aaron is in a classroom at his school trying to fill out a UCAS
statement, however he does not think that he can afford to go now as a
result of the rise in university fees. He decides to go on a student protest
and arranges to go with his friends.
(2) There is a news report about protesting against the rise in university
fees.
(3) Credits: Title, actors, director.
(4) News report about increase of rioting at protests.
(5) Aaron in getting into trouble with the police and getting arrested.
(6) (Flashback) Aaron walking/on train to school  to help establish a
working class society
CONVENTIONS:
 ‡ Themes: I will conform to the themes usually discussed in British Social Realist
films, however will give a creative twist to them.‡
 Representation of gender: I will subvert from the stereotypical representation of
lazy, uncaring teenagers. ‡
 Representation of class: My film will have hybrid elements of class to most British
Social Realist films.‡
 Mise-en-scene: As my representation of class is conforming to the British Social
Realism representation, the mise-en-scene of my film will also use similar
locations, to help connote the class of the characters.‡
 Music & sound effects: Most of the sound I use in my film will be ambient and
diegetic, as this will help give a realistic feel to the film.‡
 Camera shots & editing: Similar to This is England, I will give a documentary style
feel my film. I will do this by using a unsteady, handheld camera to create the
effect that the camera is another person in the film, allowing the audience to feel
as if they were that person.‡
 Dialogue: Conforming to the British social realist genre and given a clear
understanding of where the character come from, I will give my characters strong
East London accents and make sure their slang is the slang used around this area.
My film will, also, have a hybrid element to most British Social Realism films,
because most of the dialogue in my film will not bring the story forward to much.
STYLE AND ICONOGRAPHY:
 I will use hand held mobile footage, news reports to bring
the audience into the film and to create more realism. This
will have a large effect on the audience.
 I will use editing to create an effect for my audience by
using; rewinds to make them confused and make them
want to see what is going to happen in the film towards the
end.
 The type of costumes and props I will use will have a large
effect on the audience as they will be what gives the film a
sense of realism making the film seam as if it is real and to
make them relate to the characters even more.
 The sound (music and sound effects) will create an effect
by adding to the drama and will relate to the atmosphere
of the protest.
INSTITUTION:
 As the brief states that the production company is Film 4, I
will take into account the type of film they usually produce
and will make sure my film meets this criteria.
 Alongside many other British Social Realism films I would
say that, as a result of the controversial themes discussed,
the film will not be distributed in some countries. I think
that the film would properly only be distributed to English
speaking countries and even then, as a result of regional
dialect used in the film, the film may only be distributed in
a few countries. Also, slang is hard to translate and other
countries may not understand how different words are used
to mean different things.
 My film would be exhibited in/on:- Independent
cinemas/Art houses- YouTube- ITunes- Illegal websites-
Lovefilm.com- DVD
