MONTHLY CLASS DEBATE

Monthly Class Debate is an extra activity created for English secondary students who study in Milky Way
School. It is an effective activity to help students build their confidence in speaking, persuade the audience
to believe in their opinions, build good teamwork, do research, and develop critical thinking. In addition,
students will experience and learn a lot of new things from this debate so that they can prepare themselves
for the Annual English Debate Contest. The procedures and guidelines are used as follows:

I. Team Creation Stage


- The contest is for secondary students who study in Milky Way School.
- Class teacher has to form students in class into teams and each team consists of three or more than
three students.
- There are two or more than two teams in each virtual class based on the number of the students.
- Class teacher will do lucky draw to pair debate teams (if there are more than two teams in a
virtual class) and assign those teams as Proposition or Opposition.

II. Topic Selection Stage


- The topics should select from the students’ textbooks, or they should be the social issues that happen
in the society.
- Class teacher should select the topics for students. In addition, the class teacher is able to work with
relevant people such head teacher, KD, CP or academic representative to select the topics.
- The topics are chosen or provided in the first week of the month.

III. Debate Preparation Stage


To conduct the debate effectively, class teacher plays a vital role to assist students to make sure they
have good teamwork and prepare their teams well before the debate begins. The following guidelines
are used for this stage:
- Class teacher has to do the debate orientation to the students and make sure they know how to do
it.
- Class teacher assigns team leaders and instructs them what they should prepare for their teams.

- Team leaders assign tasks and roles for their members.


- Class teacher assists students by providing some useful resources to support their topics.
- Class teacher has to follow up with all students to make sure they cooperate and work well with
their teammates.
- Class teacher has to prepare some materials which are used for the debate.
- Class teacher has to set a specific date and arrange the classroom for the debate.

IV. Debate Stage


- The debate is organized by the class teacher and supported by CP/KD and head teacher.
- Class teacher has to arrange the tables in the classroom or in the library for the debate.
- The debate starts with the first speaker of the proposition team up the last speaker of the
opposition team.
- Students have to follow the debate rules and guidelines provided by English Education
Department.
- Class teacher is a judge as well as a moderator who facilitates and gives feedback to students
during the debate.
- CP/KD and head teacher should join and observe the debate and give feedback to class teacher
about the debate.
- The debate is conducted every fourth week of the month to select one team which gets the highest
marks as a winning team of the month.

V. Rule and Regulation


There are some rules and regulations as follows:
- Each team consists of three or more than three students based on the number of the students in the
class.
- There is one team leader (the first speaker) and two or more than two members in each team.
- All speakers have to follow their roles assigned.
- Each speaker is allowed to speak for 3-5 minutes.
- There are three arguments to support the topic/ motion.
- There is a question from the opponent when each speaker has finished the speech. No question for
the last speakers who deliver the conclusions and do the reply speeches.
- There are two minutes for asking and answering the questions.
- One question should be no longer than 30 seconds.
- The moderator is eligible to interrupt the speaker when the time is over.

VI. Awarding
To encourage and motivate the students to participate in Monthly Class Debate, we have to prepare some
motivated gifts for a winning team of the month such as:
- 2 pens and two notebooks
- Other suitable gifts, etc.

VII. Assessment
To implement this class debate consistently and productively, relevant people are required to take the
following actions:
- CP, KD, and head teacher have to follow up with class teachers to make sure they implement this
activity smoothly.
- CP, KD, and head teacher have to support class teachers and motivate students to join the debate.
- English Education Team also follows up this implementation and checks students’ progress.

Without your cooperation, it will not happen smoothly and productively.
