Carthaginian Garrisons in Turdetania: The Monetary Evidence

Ruth Pliego, Eduardo Ferrer-Albelda
The relationship between Carthage and the Iberian Peninsula has traditionally been interpreted as the result of
Carthaginian domination and from an invasionist perspective. Indeed, the historiographical tradition, up until the
1980s, understood the involvement of Carthage in Iberia as another episode of its imperialist policy, leading to the
substitution of the Phoenician colonial domination by the Carthaginian occupation towards the end of the 6th century
bc. An important manifestation of this is the repopulation of Phoenician territories and cities by Libyo-Phoenician
populations, as was the case in Gadir, Seks, Malaka, Abdera and Baria. This interpretation was based mainly on
literary sources, but was rooted in an uncritical and decontextualised analysis of a limited, dissimilar and polemical…

Auxilia and Gymnasia: A Sicilian Model of Roman Imperialism
2007 •Jonathan Prag
This paper examines the evidence for military activity in the Republican provincia of Sicily from the Punic Wars to the
Civil Wars, and the implications of this for our understanding of Republican Sicily and Republican imperialism. After
the Second Punic War there was very little use of Roman or Italian allied soldiers on the island, but extensive use, by
Rome, of local Sicilian soldiers. The rich evidence for gymnasia suggests one way in which this use of local
manpower was based upon existing civic structures and encouraged local civic culture and identity. These
conclusions prompt a reassessment of the importance of auxilia externa under the Roman Republic and of models
for Republican imperial control of provinciae.

…Auxilium consanguineis karthaginiensis misere: un nuevo marco interpretativo de las relaciones. Entre
Cartago y las comunidades púnicas de Iberia
Ruth Pliego, Eduardo Ferrer-Albelda
The relations between Carthage and the Iberian Peninsula have mainly been viewed from the perspective of military
domination. The traditional historiography up to the 80’s interpreted the Carthaginian policy on the Iberian Peninsula
at the end of the VI century BC as basically one of imperial domination directed at replacing the Phoenician presence
by direct Carthaginian control. This particular view was based on a not too critical use of Greek and Latin written
sources, themselves very limited in scope and many times of polemical interpretation. Nevertheless, ever since the
publication in 1975 of a fundamental work by C. R. Whittaker, Carthaginian imperialism in the fifth and fourth
centuries, it became evident that there had
Continue not been such a consistently aggressive, anti-Hellenic, imperialist…

Provincia Sicilia: between Roman and local in the third century BC
Jonathan Prag
Sicily, the first transmarine ‘provincia’ of the Republican empire offers a number of new perspectives on the
developing processes of Roman imperialism, and the relationship between Roman imperialism and local
communities. This paper explores a number of examples of such imperial interaction in Sicily and considers their
implications for Republican imperialism in the west. These examples include: the marking out of the first known
Roman road outside of Italy, during the First Punic War; the beginnings of taxation and magisterial rule of western
Sicily immediately after the First Punic War; the use of kinship diplomacy in Sicily in the third century BC; the
development of epigraphic practice in Sicily in this period, and the contemporary development in epigraphic practice…

Military developments in the 'Late Iberian' culture (c. 237-c. 195 BC): Mediterranean influences in the 'Far
West' via the Carthaginian military (in English)..
Fernando Quesada-Sanz
The traditional Iberian panoply developed during the 5th and 4th centuries BC, superbly adapted to the local
circumstances of warfare in the Iberian Peninsula, underwent major modifications and adaptations in the late 3rd
century BC. After their defeat in the First Punic War, the Carthaginians, and in particular the Barcid faction, used the
Southern and Eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula, already subject to much Semitic influence since the ninth
century BC, to rebuild some sort of territorial and economic ‘empire’. A big part of Spain became a logistical and
military base, thousands of mercenaries were hired and local subjects and allies recruited, and by the time Hannibal
marched on Italy, a sizeable part of his army was built around a hard core of African and Iberian or Celtiberian…
