Centrifugal Fluid Pressure Canceling Mechanism
U250E
Centrifugal Fluid Pressure Canceling Mechanism
Early designs systems used a check ball to release centrifugal force fluid left in the
piston when the clutch was released. The check ball provided a path to exhaust that
oil (preventing bind ups)

The new design uses lube oil on the front side of the piston to aide in the release of
the clutch as shown.

U250E
Centrifugal Fluid Pressure Canceling Mechanism
The balance piston creates a “piston fluid pressure chamber” that uses
lube oil to create centrifugal fluid pressure on top of the piston. This
counteracts any centrifugal pressure created on the bottom or apply side
of the piston.
This eliminated the need to discharge the fluid through the use of a check
ball, and is highly responsive to create smooth shift characteristics.

The U250 Solenoids are very easy to mix up. Many of the electrical connectors
are the same color and the bodies of the solenoids look almost Identical

If you mix up the solenoid various symptoms will develop so it is very important
To get the solenoid into its correct location.
Always mark the solenoids and bores to make it easier for you to reinstall the
Solenoids after repair

If you failed to ID the solenoid and bore prior to removal you can ID the solenoid
By looking at the slots cut into the body of the solenoid snout.

Count the number of slots on the electrical connector side of the solenoid body

Large Check Ball Locations
The 3 large check balls in the Upper VB are use in exhausting oil

Check Ball Sizes: 0.394” (10mm)

U250E
Small Check Ball Locations
There are 11 small check balls in the main portion of the VB. All of
the check balls are composite, make sure the check balls seat
properly before re-using. Recommended to replace during OH.

The Torque Converter check valve and spring must be installed as
shown. Leaking or failure to install properly will result in converter

SL and SLT Solenoid Description
The linear solenoid valve SLT controls the transmission line pressure for a
smooth shift based on signals from the TPS and VSS. The ECM adjusts the
duty cycle of the SLT solenoid valve to control hydraulic line pressure
coming from the primary regulator valve.

Solenoid Valves SL1, SL2, SL3 and SLT have the same basic structure
U250E
DSL, S4 and SR Solenoid Description
The Solenoid Valve SR controls the solenoid relay valve. The fluid passages
from the solenoid valve DSL and S4 have been redesigned starting in 2007

The DSL, S4 and SR

solenoids are “three-
passage shift solenoid
valves
U250E
DSL, S4 and SR Solenoid Description
The S4 solenoid valve, when commanded “ON”, controls the 4-5 shift valve to
stroke against the spring. Fifth (5th) gear is established by removing pressure
to the B3 brake and applying pressure to the C3 clutch.

U250E
ECM Inputs and Outputs

The ECM combines both the

Engine CPU and the
Transmission CPU. The
inputs from the engine and
transmission sensors are
used to control shift timing
and feel. The strategy is
derived from emissions and
related devices.

07 Camry Hard Shifts

To enhance shifting performance and smoothness during acceleration, the Engine

Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has
been revised.

Hard Downshifts
Introduction
Some 2005 – 2009 model year Camry vehicles equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine and
U250E automatic transaxle (ATM) may exhibit a harsh 5–4 downshift under the
following conditions:
• AT at normal operating temperature
• After driving above 45 mph (72 km/h)
• Decelerating through 28 mph (45 km/h)
Repair
The line pressure control solenoid assembly (SLT) has been improved to reduce this
condition on customer complaint vehicles.
