The Good Problem

By Duncan Maugham

Some problems are stressful, but I had a good problem. I recently graduated with a
degree in sociology. I applied for two positions. The first position was as a counselor1 at a Youth
Services Center. The job involved coaching young people. The objective was to encourage them
to stay in school.
The second position was as a research assistant with the local government. The research
involved collecting data about issues affecting young people. The job involved writing
proposals2 to get money for more programs and resources.
I interviewed for both positions. To my surprise, I received two job offers! I couldn’t
decide which position to accept. There were interesting things about both positions. What a good
problem!
For the past three summers, I’ve worked as a summer camp counselor. I love working
with young people. They like me because I’m close to their age. I decided that finding money for
programs and resources is the best way to help young people. I chose the research position. It
was the right decision.
