Abandoned Town

The darkness of the night foretold the glacial temperatures to come later in those hours.
The wind howled excruciatingly, biting away on cheeks of any uninvited guest who dared
to come to the forbidden town. Papers, tins and bottles were propelled forward by a mere
but an arctic gale.
The snow rested inaudibly on exposed chimneys, skyscraper roofs, mosque domes and
their cupolas. Bales of freshly fallen snow on pavements were being adorned with yet
even more milky tufts of snow. Like snow, water too fell from tapering stalactites; each
drop an addition to the sparkling puddle of water underneath.
Frozen. As far as the eye could see, everything was but frozen. Rows of lifeless statues,
which were displayed prominently in shops and stores, stared with an inscrutable gaze. A
handsome man in a huge hoarding stood in a provocative pose and flamboyantly
exhibited the ash grey suit and tie he was wearing. His eyes drooped above his grim
expression as if he was looking downwards. The raven black hair were not a bad match
for his charismatic physical features either.
The wind howled again but this time from a Northern direction. The change in direction,
however, made a distant door bang somewhere against wall, producing a dull but heavy
thud. It was marvelous, though, how the wind whistled through small fissures exactly like
an anonymous person would. But the haunting atmosphere surrounding the mysterious
town on GT road could not be broken with even the most thunderous of sounds blaring.
Somewhere a bat screeched. Somewhere an owl hooted. Then silence. Perfect silence.
The combination of nocturnal raptors, it seemed, had finally hunted down their fated
prey. As eyes fell down, a car was spotted near the amusement arcade. With its bonnet
crumpled malleably and its windscreen shattered into a hundred pieces, it was obvious
that the unfortunate driver had swerved the blue car accidentally from the main street into
the arcade. Ravages of time had deserted the blue auto mobile with streaks of yellowish
brown and reddish brown rust.
Time, it seemed, had not been really merciful to the buildings either. Moss and lichen
enveloped boulders if not buildings. Vines and tendrils twined around any suitable
support they could find. Years of acid rain had attacked the buildings, leaving structures
with an amber yellow color. Where a street light of a tall lamp was supposed to be, now
resided a bird nest as a replacement.
A light flashed.
Confusion arose but so did curiosity. There was one supposed to be in this abandoned
hamlet. Then what was that? Drawing a few steps closer to the strange luminosity, the
discovery made was futile. A scrawny old bulb beside a spider’s web bounced forward
and backward with the aid of a continuous wind. Oscillating to and fro, the bulb
illuminated the room with the broken windows through different angles. Beams of light
shone between the zigzag edges of the windows.
How many years had it been? Fifty? Seventy? Since the fabled town, which was
established above the burning mines of coal was abandoned. As eyes turned elsewhere, a
glass of milk was seen on the wooden table in the room. There was something indeed
peculiar about it. Yes, a drop of milk sliding against the surface of glass confirmed the
suspicion of an unknown presence. It seemed that someone, “something” was there…
