The School under the Bridge
1 In India, many children don’t go to school. They live in very poor places that
don’t have any schools. One man, Rajesh Sharma, sees the children on the streets.
He decides to help these children by opening a free school for them.
210 Sharma’s school doesn’t look like other schools because he doesn't have a lot of
money. His school is under a bridge in New Delhi. There aren’t any walls or
classrooms, and there are only a few chairs for the teachers. The children have
classes outside, and they can hear the trains coming and going on the bridge above
their heads.
315 Nine-year-old Priyanka goes to The School under the Bridge. She says, “The
teaching here is good. I like coming to this school.” She studies there because she
wants to have a good job in the future.
4 Sharma and all the other teachers at the school don’t get any money for their
work with the children. They teach the children because they want to help boys and
girls like Priyanka and give them a better future. Sharma believes that children from
poor families can stop being poor. He believes that if children go to school and get a
good education*, they will have better jobs and more money in the future.

They have red faces and lots of fur1. They are 80-95 centimeters tall and weigh between
10 and 14 kilograms.

Where do they live?

Snow monkeys live in Japan. They are called“snow monkeys” because they live in places
where it often snows. Today, about 150,000 snow monkeys live in the wild 2.

What do they eat?

5 Snow monkeys eat many different kinds of food. They love fruit and vegetables, but they
will eat almost anything. In the winter (when it is hard to find food), they will even eat
the bark3 from the trees.

Where can you see snow monkeys?

One of the best places to see these cute animals is at Jigokudani Monkey Park in the
10north of Japan. Why there? Because there are hot water pools in this park, and the

snow monkeys love to sit in them. The park is open every day, but opening hours may
change during the holidays. You can check the opening hours and prices on the Jigokudani
Monkey Park website.
