Maps and globes.
Maps and globes show us a representation of the surface of the Earth.
They show us different continents, rivers, seas, lakes… Some maps also
show us more details, for example countries, cities and roads.

A wall map show us all the continents and oceans on one poster.

A globe is a model of the Earth. It show us what the Earth looks like
from the space.

You can find lots of different kinds of digital maps on the internet.

An atlas is a book with different maps on each page.

Satnavs (satellite navigation systems) helps drivers navigate the


streets.

Invisible lines
An invisible lines through the centre of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole is the
Earth’s axis.

An invisible line around the middle of the earth is called Equator.

The equator divides the Earth into two parts:

- The Northern Hemisphere.


- The Southern Hemisphere.
Types of maps.

A key.
A key tells us what the different colours, shapes and symbols on a map mean.
A compass.
A compass shows us the four cardinal points:

Scales
Maps with a small scale show Maps with a large scale can show
very large areas, for example the smaller areas, such as a city, with more

A plan.
A plan is like a map, but of a room or building. It shows us the size and
position of the furniture, doors, windows and walls.
