Define Maps

• “A map is a drawing of an area of the earth

that shows the location of selected features
of things.” Cartographers are those who
make maps.
Map Classifications

• Thematic: Shows information on a specific topic or theme

across a geographic location ranging from regions to
continents.

• Reference: Shows the location of multiple geographic features

of a place on the same map. It gives basic information on
features that don’t change much over time.
 Types of Maps
Reference
Physical Map: Show the natural landscape
features of Earth using colours only. Darker
greens are used for near-sea-level elevations,
with the colour grading into tans and browns as
elevations increase. It may also indicates the
names of these location.
Political Map: They show the geographic
boundaries between governmental units such as
countries, states, and parishes. They show roads,
cities and major water features such as oceans,
rivers and lakes.
Thematic
Choropleth: Display divided geographical areas or
regions that are coloured, shaded or patterned in
relation to the type of data. E.g. population,
weather.
Dot Map: Shows the distribution and density of
geographic data in an area. Each dot represents a
specific number shown on its map keys. Often
shows the population by the number or size of dots.
Topographic Map: Shows height of the Flow Map: Uses lines varying in width to
land usually using lines of equal elevation show patterns of the movement of

Road/Street Map: Show the layout of

roads in cities, towns, and entire

Activity 2-HomeWork Drawing

• Draw a road/street Map of a community (can be made

up). Include symbols presented; any three buildings, an
airport and two main roads. Include a North Arrow, key
and scale on your map.
