Fellow delegates and honorable chairman, The militarization of the South

China Sea by the People's Republic of China has put the livelihoods of local
fishing communities and the ASEAN countries that surround it in jeopardy.
The South China Sea has historically been the backbone of economic
stability for local fishing communities and a reliable source of oil and natural
gas for those same nations. China is entirely disregarding the other nations
claims, trying to take control of all the natural resources in the South China
Sea, and endangering vital trade routes between oceanic states and western
nations.
Greece's delegation contends that China is violating the UNCLOS (united
nations conventional law of the sea) The Hellenic Republic contends that as
China is not exempt from UNCLOS and should only be permitted to exploit
areas within its exclusive economic zone, China must demilitarise the South
China Sea.
