Resolving the issue of offshore bases in non-national territories

Contrary to Asian views, us the Hellenic republic believes American offshore
bases are a necessity for world stability, and is not only reassurance for countries
with weaker military, against greater threats, but also a financial asset as it allows
countries to focus more on socio-economical subjects rather than worry about
military safety (T and F online )1. Despite this, the delegation of Greece does not
support the illegal placement of military bases by the people’s republic of China
(PRC) in the south China sea (al Jazeera)2.

This nation believes that the social and economic growth of the country is far more
important than its military (Hellenic republic Economic Affairs). This leaves
Greece vulnerable to offensive gestures from the east and in country rebellions.
Due to this Greece has recently extended a base contract with the USA for 5 years
for the bases in the following locations:
 Volos
 Crete-
 Alexandropouli
 Litohoro

This delegation believes external military is essential for the stability of certain
place like Iraq and Syria. Though the unattractiveness of having a foreign base in
your country, sometimes it is vital and getting rid of it could have serious
consequences, as we have seen in Afghanistan.

The south China sea problem roots from the enormous number of resources present
in it. It contains over 11 billion barrels of oil and over 190 trillion cubic feet of
natural gas (American association of resources)4. This causes China to have great
interest in this area. This delegation suggests that China be given control over the
waters, but be required to pay a reasonable royalty and provide fishing rights to the
other nations that lay claim to the waters and along with this the (PRC) will also
have to withdraw their military bases from the south China sea.
This resolution allows the oceanic nations to generate revenue through fishing and,
passively through China. The removal of Chinese bases from the water allows the
un to negate the threat upon American trade through those waters. Furthermore,
this resolution prevents tension and protentional even war between China and the
oceanic nations and also strengthens relations between un and China

Though this delegation is in full support of military bases, China’s breaching of the
*UN law of the sea* has caused us to look upon the country negative the
delegation of Greece hopes that this resolution comes into practice and that future
conflicts such as this example will no longer occur.
