2. Executive Summary
Bangladesh has a rapidly growing consumer market and due to a large population base, the demand for
food products is always on the rise. The market and the product range have evolved significantly over
the last decade and many companies have entered the food business which was otherwise not into this
level of diversification in the past. Bangladesh has around 246 medium-sized food processing industries
and 8% of the total manufacturing labor force is working to uplift these food industries. In recent years,
food industries in Bangladesh have grown rapidly.

Food processing in Bangladesh has traditionally been small scale, with domestic or family business using
common processing knowledge for the conservation and handling of raw agricultural commodities to
make them usable as food and feed. Although commercial scale food processing using modern
technology especially for wheat and rice milling, mustard seed crushing and very limited bread and
cookie manufacturing appeared during the 1960s, the growth of this sector did not gain momentum in
terms of operational scale and quality until the 1980s. Recently the defining characteristics of the industry
has been the processing of increasingly diverse products to meet the changing demands of the Bangladesh
population. The major food processing sub-sectors in Bangladesh include dairy, edible oil, sugar, rice,
wheat, fruit and vegetable, tea, poultry/beef, pulses and spices and fish processing industries. Induced by
the vigorous growth of the diverse middle class population of Bangladesh and the growing demands for
additional consumption, the food processing sector is set to witness further hefty expansion in the coming
years.

Good quality products are preferred by the customers. They feel confident in choosing that. Frozen food
industry is a booming industry. This will be a new beginning for the food market and the company hopes
to curve a niche for themselves with a strong market share facilitated with product line and consumer
base that is already there for the frozen food products. As they bring in each new product category into
the market, the consumers would have a better choice for those products and they would have a better
quality product backed by the brand equity.

The growing need for fresh and frozen foods has led to the opening of Atlas Frozen Food. We are a
business that seeks to redefine how foods are being stored and preserved in their fresh state and sold. We
will be selling our products to our primary market in Gulshan 2, Dhaka. This is only for the short term as
we expand our frozen food business outlets across Dhaka city and beyond. Our products include a cold
room with a supply of Beef Patty, Beef Kebab, Beef kolija Singara, Chicken Patty, Chicken Samosa in
addition to Vegetable Cutlet, Daal Puri, Ata Ruti, Deshi Paratha. We will be focused on serving at large
market using large equipment such as industrial scale cold rooms among others.
5

Our product and services is different in the sense that we will produce fresh and chemical free products.
We will do home service delivery. We make sure our products are affordable for everybody to purchase
standard business plan on frozen food in Dhaka.

We will help the customers to bear the stress of processing and preserving the foods. We are able to solve
the problem of individuals or organization getting worried in getting Frozen food that they will prepare
for their guest during event or any form of celebration. We will solve the problems of unemployment.

Now a day’s people are very busy. In near future people will depend more on frozen food. It is convenient,
easy to use and it’s not time consuming at all. Basically young and children like frozen food more. Atlas
Frozen Food BD Ltd. will grow in the Bangladeshi Market. We have more visionary future goal. It will
do good in the market.

3. Industry Analysis
3.1 Future outlook and trends
The fast-paced urban life, rising disposable incomes, increasing number of women in the workforce,
resulting shortage time, and the preference for nuclear families are significant reasons for the growing
acceptance of frozen food among Bangladeshi consumers. In addition, factors include rising disposable
income in the country, the introduction of longer shelf-life products, increasing impulse purchasing,
and massive demand for frozen food products due to the lack of time. With a growing market in the
background, a comprehensive economic analysis of frozen food market has been discussed below.

3.2 Analysis of Competitors

The Bangladeshi frozen food market is consolidated, owing to the less presence of numerous local and
international players. The raw material suppliers are farmers or middlemen who transfer farm supplies to
the frozen food manufacturers. Some of the prominent players in the country include Golden Harvest,
Pran RFL Group, AG Foods Ltd, Frozen Foods Ltd, Kazi Farms Group, McCain Foods, Royal Frozen
Foods, Savar Dairy & Poultry, Eurasia Food Processing (BD) Ltd., Apex Foods Limited (AFL) among
others.

Major Players
 Golden Harvest Agro Industries Ltd.

 Pran-RFL Group Ltd.

 McCain Foods.

 AG Agro Foods Limited.

 Kazi Farms Group.

Competitive Advantage
We consider the frozen food businesses within the Gulshan 2 area as not being competitive enough. We
are coming with a lot of enthusiasm and passion to change the way things are being done. We have
identified major areas such as branding and quality of service as needing improvement.
Providing these in addition to a wide variety of products will enhance our chances of capturing the
market. Sales and Marketing Strategies for our marketing strategies to be effective, we seek to understand
the frozen food needs of the market. We will be increasing the variety of our frozen food stock as well
7

as providing adequate advertising. Also, fliers containing all our products and services will be distributed.
This will be in addition to mounting our billboards at strategic locations.

Target Market
We have a wide target market. As long as people live, they must eat. Therefore, our target market will
include households, restaurants, individuals, lovers, tourists, and residents of Jacksonville. We will
expand our target market once we identify these as well as their needs.
8

Micro and Macro Economic Challenges to Overcome

• Despite the convenience and ease of use, many consumers still cannot fully rely on the
frozen food products due to lack of monitoring and policies to ensure quality of the products.
Although authorities carry out different mobile courts from time to time, both Bangladesh
Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and Bangladesh Food Safety Authority have yet to
claim it under their jurisdiction to standardize the processed and frozen food items. Under these
circumstances, consumers have to solely rely on the assurance given by the frozen food
producers, who declare to have their own mechanism to ensure quality. Some certifications
claimed by the frozen food companies include ISO, HALAL and HACCP.
• The variety in the food items under the frozen food category is an obstacle for which the
concerned authorities cannot standardize any procedure or regulation for monitoring the
companies. About 45 types of processed frozen food items are being sold by a number of
companies, all of which claim different quality standards.
• A frozen food item with a 12-month shelf-life must be refrigerated at -18 degrees’ Celsius
temperature. The retailers quite often face challenges to maintain proper temperature after
receiving the goods from the company which affects the product quality. The consumers,
however, end up blaming the manufacturer for the lack of quality and refuse to rely on the
brands.
• There has been a simultaneous increase in the lack of reliance on courier and delivery
services with growing popularity of them. The degrading traffic situation is one of the key
reasons behind the failure to ship orders in scheduled time to customers.

3.3 Market Segmentation

Since the market is already a competitive one, we expect that we will be able to grasp at least 2-4% of
market share within five years of our inception. Albeit this will require our best efforts to arrive at such
a big market share. We expect our profit to grow by 20% in the first two years, 30% in the third year and
40% in the fourth year. At the fifth year our profit will stand at 13,10,400 takas. If everything goes well,
we will continue our business following in above mentioned information and if not we will arrange
funding from loan or elsewhere.

Market Overview
The Bangladeshi frozen food market is registering a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period (2022-
2027).
10

The COVID-19 outbreak significantly impacted all industries worldwide, but it has positively impacted
the frozen food market. Since COVID-19 began, the frozen food industry has seen steady growth.
The fast-paced urban life, rising disposable incomes, increasing number of women in the workforce,
resulting shortage time, and the preference for nuclear families are significant reasons for the growing
acceptance of frozen food among Bangladeshi consumers. In addition, factors include rising disposable
income in the country, the introduction of longer shelf-life products, increasing impulse purchasing, and
massive demand for frozen food products due to the lack of time.
The Bangladeshi frozen food market is growing at a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period (2022-
2027). Products have become much more accessible and affordable for consumers across the globe. The
advent of new technologies has resulted in the affordability of frozen food.
Scope of the Business
Frozen food is food products preserved under low temperatures and used over a long period. The frozen
food market is segmented by category into ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook, ready-to-drink, and other frozen
food types; by type into frozen fruits and vegetables, frozen meat and fish, frozen-cooked ready meals,
frozen desserts, frozen snacks, and other applications; and by distribution channel into Supermarkets &
Hypermarkets, Convenience Stores, Online Channels, and Others. The report offers market size and
forecasts in value (USD million) for the above segments.

3.4 Industry and Market Forecast

A rise in the demand for all forms of convenience food and beverage products is witnessed, owing to
busy lifestyles and an increasing number of the working population in Bangladesh. The changing food
consumption pattern in consumers, due to the rapid expansion of urbanization and rise in disposable
incomes in the country, is one of the factors contributing to the growth of ready-to-food and beverage
products. Owing to the increased demand for frozen food, leading companies like Golden Harvest and
Pran are opting for the expansion strategy to expand their market presence and consumer bases. Frozen
fruit and vegetable products are perceived to be healthy by the local consumers, as they contain more
nutrients than preserved food products.

Increasing Consumer Appetite and Acceptance

The frozen or convenience food industry, which started by offering essential frozen vegetables and fries,
today provides a wide range of snack products, ranging from Veg snacks and vegan snacks items to
11

frozen meats and ready-to-cook products. With the increasing customer appetite and acceptance, the
frozen snacks market has recorded a healthy growth rate, complemented by an increase in selling points,
deeper penetration by organized retail players, and increased freezer space in retail channels. The
changing lifestyles of consumers offer several opportunities for manufacturers across industries.
Facilitated by the rise in the number of women in the workforce and the increasing at-home socializing,
along with the preference for nuclear families, have led to the growing acceptance of western food in the
developing countries, thereby enabling the need for on-the-move foods, thus, in turn, enhancing the
demand for frozen snacks altogether.

9. Assessment of Risk

9.1 Evaluate Weakness of business

Assessment of risk is Identifying potential hazards and alternative strategies to meet business plan goals
and objectives.

Producing, shipping, storing, and selling frozen foods comes with risks at every step of the cold chain.
These risks include temperature fluctuations (which cause loss of product quality and shelf life) as well
as potential problems with power and equipment resiliency and the loss of profits.

Among frozen food risk factors, temperature stability for protecting frozen food ranks high on the list.
Another factor to consider when protecting frozen food is loss of power due to outages or equipment
failures. The electrical grid is constantly being pushed to its limits due to industry and consumers’ rapidly
growing need for power, spikes in demand, and increasing global temperatures which can lead to
temporary power loss.

Last, but certainly not least, is the risk of lost profits. All businesses safeguarding frozen food on its way
to our tables must overcome several risks that diminish operational profitability.

Major Risks of the frozen food industry

There are 3 big challenges while operating the frozen food industry. They are-

1) Complex Logistic
2) Minimum Capacity
3) Safety Concern’

1) Complex Logistics

Whatever the size of the capacity, the logistic is too challenging. In the world of frozen foods, it should
be tracked of both your raw ingredients as well as the lots of finished goods on-hand, and those may be
split across several different lines that your brand produces, each having their own nuances.

In addition, an adequate space in the storage and staging areas to accommodate all the inbound materials
and outbound orders that move in and out of your facilities each day. This is challenging for any
individual to accomplish unless we are provided the necessary tools by software designed to facilitate the
process.
41

2) Minimum Capacity

With demand high and the sector predicted to remain on an upward trajectory, frozen food companies are
dealing with the challenge of limited capacity. Of course, Atlas Frozen Food BD Ltd. may not be in the
position to rent additional space or open another facility, especially not when our items require
temperature-controlled storage space.

We must make the most of the capacity you have and operate as efficiently as possible to capitalize on
the opportunities for revenue generation that such a torrid market offers. As it is in so many other aspects
of life, proper preparation is key for overcoming the constraints are being faced.

3) Food Safety Concern

While it is certainly a challenge across the spectrum of food and beverage segments, food safety is
especially complicated in the frozen food sector for two reasons. First, there’s the universally applicable
consideration of expiration date tracking which could be subject customers to the risks of spoiled goods,
and we’ve also motivated to make full use of the materials purchased.

Second, there’s the unique concern in the frozen food market of keeping your products within certain
temperature ranges to maintain their integrity and mitigate the risk of potentially dangerous bacterial
growth should thawing begin to occur.

Other Challenges

1) Time Management and Compliance

Efficiency and product control are high priorities for cold storage facility managers. They must use time-
tested processes as well as implement new industrial equipment that makes their business run more
smoothly and, ultimately, more profitably. These professional managers must constantly look for systems
and solutions that reduce waste, eliminate unnecessary cost and improve worker safety. The fundamental
goal is to prevent losing food products and profit.

2) Upkeep of the Food’s Life Cycle

Keeping frozen food from spoiling due to undergoing the wrong conditions is one of the biggest
challenges in the market. Several issues can occur without the proper maintenance of a product’s
42

lifecycle. We must always keep on top of the temperature of perishable products if you’re in cold storage
warehouse management.

The upkeep process is about the quality and safety of the foods in your warehouse is keeping a close
watch and tight management over their conditions from the point of manufacture all the way through the
supply chain to the point when they reach consumer hands.

3) Requirements for Accurate Product Tracing

At all times, we need to have accurate location information about the products that move through your
warehouse, so we can determine affected products in situations with sudden or unexpected temperature
changes. Without exact traceability, it would be impossible to locate these products. Fresh produce and
similar perishable products require even more management and control over external factors like
humidity and carbon dioxide.

4) Labeling of Racks and Individual Products

Barcode labels are crucial. They create the link between each physical product in your inventory and your
computer systems that monitor receiving, storage, retrieval and shipments. A single forgotten or lost label
could lead to an unsafe or entirely ruined shipment.

5) Courier Shipments and Fulfillment

The most important part of cold chain process management is minimizing the amount of time it takes to
push a product from the beginning to the end of the system. Staying efficient the entire time is critical.
Without a precise level of effectiveness, the vulnerabilities we discussed earlier could begin negatively
affecting the products. Delays in moving products from one facility to the next can give these issues more
of a chance to manifest and force you to lose time and profits.

9.2 New Technics of the business

New robotic technology, energy supply, doors and barriers, seals, cables, and lubricants are on the market
that specifically functions well in harsh freezer environments, which allows palletizing to happen inside
your freezers. Instead of protective heating shrouds, conveyors and ice buildup on each product, Atlas
can minimize the handling of all frozen goods by workers, increase your speed and enhance your overall
productivity and efficiency — as long as we have the right equipment.

Freezing Technology
43

There are several ways we can categorize modern equipment for freezing. Based on the way it operates,
it can generally be divided into two principal groups:

 Integrated into the processing line for a continual flow

 For freezing the product in batches

Depending on the heat-transfer method, freezing equipment can be classified into three main groups:

Air-Blast Freezers – Using moving, frigid air to cool the food. These are the most common freezers and
are available in many different designs.

Contact Freezers – Conduction is the primary method of heat transfer. The food is frozen by bringing it
in contact with extremely cold surfaces or by immersion in a cold liquid.

Cryogenic Freezers – This technology uses liquefied gases, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, to produce
frigid temperatures.

Frozen Food Packaging Technology

Depending on their moisture content, most frozen foods can expand by as much as 9%. As such, the
frozen food packaging material needs to accommodate these changes. In addition, the type of packaging
chosen needs to:

1. Withstand freezing temperatures of -40°F.

2. Have a food packaging design that offers a good visual appeal.
3. Sustain the sealing, freezing, storage, and transportation processes and, in some cases, cooking
pressure.

Below are some of the commonly used materials in the packaging process:

Polyethylene (PE) Film – PE films can withstand low temperatures of -40°F, have good mechanical
strength, and are puncture resistant.

PE Derivatives – Different plastics can be used for frozen food packaging, such as shrink wraps, rigid
materials, flexible plastics, and single-use packaging.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – This material can withstand abrupt temperature changes and is
generally used in microwavable or boil-in-the-bag products.

Cardboard and Laminated Paper – Commonly used in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs), these
packages have a limited shelf life after taking the product out of the freezer.
44

Tin Cans – These were the traditional frozen food packaging material but are less cost-efficient when
compared to the alternatives.

Aluminum Foil Laminates – These offer the best results in water transmission, oxygen permeability,
thermal and mechanical stability, and sealing quality.

Sealing Technology

A good sealing will ensure the overall safety and quality of the end product by protecting it from the
external environment. Depending on the type of packaging film, there are several methods and packaging
machines available:

Direct Heat Sealing – This system can be used on various plastic packaging materials, notably thicker
ones like polypropylene.

Impulse Heat Sealing – This system applies an electrical impulse in a piece of wire that’s heated and
cooled. Impulse heat sealing is a more cost-effective alternative to direct heat sealing.

VFFS Systems – VFFS packaging represents vertical forming, filling, and sealing technology, a
packaging system of filling and sealing the product within the same production line.

Zip-Locks – This type of sealing technology is gaining popularity in the frozen food market because of
the increased convenience and overall quality, and visual appeal of the packaging. They are often used
in combination with a heat-sealing method.

9.3 Contingency Plan

We can make some contingency plan for Atlas Frozen Food BD Ltd.

1) Create an effective Plan

Any number of cold storage warehouse management problems could arise, and we can’t always predict
what’s going to come next. On the contrary, should be constantly creating contingency plans for any
possible problem that could pop up at any point in the process. A truck could break down during transport,
or one of your refrigeration units could stop working suddenly. We need to be sure your carrier or 3PL
is entirely prepared to respond appropriately and avoid loss.

We might have the best monitoring technology and systems on the market, but unplanned rerouting or
delay could still jeopardize your shipment. It’s crucial for shippers to work out contingency plans with
their transportation partners to fully and clearly map out strategies in anticipation of an unexpected issue
or delay.
45

2) Avoid Delays by Training and Fostering Relationships

Minimizing the time, a product takes to move through the system is a key way to avoid damage to your
goods. One of the most crucial factors in creating an efficient process is ensuring everyone down the line
understands frozen food warehouse management best practices.

Cold chain handling and transportation come with several crucial responsibilities, which means you must
thoroughly train employees and make them aware of your expectations. Strong partnerships must exist
among all parties for the consumer to receive the most wholesome product with the longest possible shelf
life and highest nutrition and value.

3) Manage Temperature Ranges Through Divide-and-Conquer Methods

The fact that it costs more to cool air than heat it makes energy savings an important topic of discussion
in frozen food warehouse management. But we cannot just choose one temperature and put every product
in your warehouse within that range. Different food items like vegetables, dairy products, ice cream, and
meat require different temperatures and ones that vary quite a bit.

In a conventional warehouse, reconfiguring space isn’t usually much of a problem. Managers can move
items as they choose to make more products fit within the confines of an area. In cold storage warehouse
management, the company cannot fail to take temperature into account. In most cases, food will require
several temperature zones or the products you store will change with the seasons.

4) Automate the Processes

Automating your processes is the No. 1 most helpful tip in our cold storage and frozen food warehouse
management guide. Most people realize how much the cost of labor, land and energy increase from year
to year. This economic climb makes it a best practice for operators to investigate automation to control
their costs. This process allows for automated palletizing, maximum dense storage in each cube and
controlled heat loss. Not only will you realize cost savings quickly, but we can also continue to save
money over the long term.

5) Usage of the Best Equipment

By knowing the most crucial challenges and best practices of frozen and cold storage warehouse
management Atlas beverage will appreciate the importance of having good equipment for a successful
operation. The people making and providing the equipment should have years’ worth of material handling
experience, and they should be using cutting-edge technology to deliver a wide range of equipment to
suit any unique application on our to-do list.

11. Conclusion

We have a wide target market. As long as people live, they must eat. Therefore, our target market will
include households, restaurants, individuals, lovers, tourists, and residents of Gulshan. We will expand
our target market once we identify these as well as their needs. Frozen food sold through online retail
represents a small segment of the market, but is expected to be among the fastest-growing segments. The
urban population in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh have slowly started preferring online channels,
as it is hassle-free, convenient, less time-consuming, and consumers get a larger variety of goods to
choose from.

C. Letter
30.12.22
Manager
Jupiter Shopping Complex
Road no. 37/A, Mirpur-2
Dhaka.

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Anindita Apsara Ghosh, and I am writing this letter to enquire about the possibility of
renting a freezing or frozen food shop in the specious and beautiful mall of yours located at the Mirpur-
2 main street that has just recently been built.

I am planning to open a shop for frozen food named “Atlas Frozen Food BD Ltd.” which would require
a large space, probably as large as 3,000 square feet, and that too has to be at a prime spot of your shopping
complex. And when I say “prime spot”, I mean to suggest that the shop has to be located in such a
position that it can be very easily visible and accessible from all directions. By the way, I would need
such a large space because I am also planning to expand by sea fish shop later with it.

So, I would like to know if you could provide me with some information about the availability of such
commercial space for me as per my requirements. I would also appreciate it very much if you could
possibly quote me a price to rent such a shop at your shopping complex.

I would like to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,
Anindita Apsara Ghosh
Manager
Atlas Frozen Food BD Ltd.
