3. What are the wastes obtained from Bio-gas plant? How they can be utilized?
4. Discuss the characteristics of a good fuel?
5. What do you mean by calorific value? What is the difference between Gross calorific
value and Net calorific value and give their relation?

Descriptive (Long Answer) Questions:

1 How would you determine the calorific value of a fuel and how is it determined using
Bomb calorimeter? Explain with the help of neat diagram.
2 What do you mean by Lubricants? Explain extreme pressure lubrication.
3 On burning 0.3 gm of a solid fuel in a bomb calorimeter, the temperature of 3500 gm of
water increased from 26.5° C to 29.2° C. Water equivalent of calorimeter and latent heat
of steam are 385.0 gm and 587.0 cal/ gm, respectively. If the fuel contains 0.7%
hydrogen, calculate its gross and net calorific value
4 A coal has the following composition by weight: C=92%, O= 2.0 %, S= 0.5%, N =0.5%
and ash 1.5%. Net calorific value of the coal was found to be 9430 kcal/kg. Calculate the
percentage of hydrogen and higher calorific value of coal.
5 If HCV of the coal sample is 7500 cal/gm and % H= 5. Calculate its LCV. Given that
latent heat of condensation of steam = 580 cal/gm.
6 A coal sample was subjected to ultimate analysis, 0.6gm of coal on combustion in a
bomb calorimeter, produces 0.025g BaSO4. Calculate % of S in Coal Sample
7 A 2.35 gms of coal sample was taken in silica crucible and heated in oven maintained at
110oC for one hour. The weight after heating was 2.18 gms. The same sample was
analysed for volatile matter and weight obtained was 1.85g the sample as further treated
to get fixed carbon of 1.25gm. Calculate the percentage of moisture, volatile matter, ash
and fixed carbon for this sample
8 A 2.00 gm of coal sample was kjeldahlised and NH 3 gas thus evolved was absorbed in 60
ml of N/10 HCl. After absorption, the excess (residual) acid required 20ml of N/10
NaOH for exact neutralization. Calculate the percentage of Nitrogen in the coal sample.
