Body Mass Index
BMI is a marker of Optimal Healthy Weight for height, and an
indicator of Malnutrition.

When to use: For healthy persons and not critically ill.

Do not perform in: Pregnant and lactating, in very muscular

people, in older adults who have severe loss of muscle mass,
and to determine fat distribution.
Body Mass Index formula

BMI = Weight (In kilograms) / Height (m2)

or

Weight (in lbs) / height (inches2) x 703

Michelle visited the Health Center because she
wants to know her BMI. She weighs 67 kg with a

height of 5 ft'9 inches. What is her BMI and her

BMI Interpretation?
Calculate the BMI.
Formula: BMI = Weight (In kilograms) / Height (m2)

1. First, convert the patient's height of 5 feet'9 inches to m2

Note that 60 inches is equivalent to 5 ft.
69 x 2.54 = 1.75 m
1.75 x 1.75 = 3.06

BMI = 67 KG / 3. 06 = 21.85
Interpretation: NORMAL
desirable/ideal body weight
is defined as weight for height at the lowest
rate of mortality.

is the optimal weight associated with maximum

life expectancy for a given height.
desirable body weight
(tANNHAUSER'S OR BROCA'S METHOD)
WHEN TO USE: FOR HEALTHY ADULTS

MALE AND FEMALE

Desirable Body Weight (kg) = (Height in cm - 100) - [0.10 x
(Height in cm - 100)]

To compute for the healthy body weight range, just add and
subtract 10 % from your desirable body weight:

sample computation
MALE AND FEMALE
Desirable Body Weight (kg) = (Height in cm - 100) - [0.10 x (Height in cm - 100)]
Height (cm) = 152.4 cm (5’0’’ ft)
Desirable Body Weight (kg) = (152.4 - 100) - [0.10 x (152.4 - 100)] = 52.4 - 5.24
= 47.16 kg or 47 kg

To compute your healthy body weight range, just add and subtract 10 % from your desirable body
weight:
Healthy Body Weight Range (kg) = Desirable Body Weight (kg) + 10 %
Desirable Body Weight (kg) = 47.16 kg or 47 kg
Upper Limit (add 10 %) = 47 kg + (47 kg x 0.10) = 51.7 kg
Lower Limit (subtract 10 %) = 47 kg (47 kg x 0.10) = 42.3 kg
Healthy Body Weight Range (kg) = 42.3 kg - 51.7 kg

sample computation
Adjusted Body Weight = IBW + 0.4 (Actual Weight - Ideal Body Weight)

Mielle is a Nurse who consulted you because she wants to lose weight. Her actual
body weight is 108 kg, and is standing 165cm. Compute for her Adjusted Body Weight.

Compute for the Ideal Body Weight first:

165 cm - 100 = 65 kg
65 kg - 6. 50 kg = 58 kg

Adjusted Body Weight = IBW + 0.4 (Actual Weight - Ideal Body Weight)
0.4 (108 kg - 58 kg) + 58 kg
0.4 (50) + 58 kg
20 + 58 kg = 78 kg
weight loss assessment
This is useful to determine a healthy weight
loss within a period of time in a patient. A
significant weight loss may warrant nutrition
therapy and additional medical care.

sample computation

Case: Armand is an Architect who usually weighs 57 kgs.

After 3 months, he's now at 55 kgs. Assess whether his

weight loss is significant.

Step 1: Compute using the formula for Weight Loss
Assessment
% Weight Loss = ((Usual Weight - Actual Weight) / Usual Weight)) x 100

57 kg - 55 kg = 2 kg
2 kg / 57 kg = 0.0350
0.0350 x 100 = 3.50%

Step 2. Interpret Weight Loss using the Table

Interpretation: Armand's Weight Loss is

3.50% and is not significant or severe.

Question: What is the total energy requirement of Angela, a
College Student, having occasional to no workout with a height of
165 cm?

Tannhauser's IBW = Height in CM - 100

*Deduct 10% for Filipinos
165 cm - 100 = 65 kg
65 kg x 10% = 6.50 kg
65 kg - 6.50 kg = 58.5 kg

TER = 58 KG X 35 (Level of Activity; Light) = 2,030 calories
