5.1 Flow rate/pressure
5.1.1 Principle

The test consists of applying various static pressure differences through an air transfer device and
measuring the induced volume flow rates in order to define the flow rate/pressure characteristic curve.
5.1.2 Test installation and uncertainty of measurement

5.1.2.1 Test installation

limerick, 14/02/2020, IHS Global Ltd

Externally and internally mounted air transfer devices shall be mounted, according to the manufacturer's
instructions, for testing on a board which represents the thickness of the partition on which they are
intended to be mounted.
If the opening is not provided as a part of the test sample, it shall be replaced by an opening(s) in the
board. The opening(s) in the board shall be clearly defined and reported in the test report.
Typical examples of air transfer devices mounted on a board are given in Annex B.
Examples for thickness of the board are given in Table 2.

Window frame 60
Wall 300

The air transfer device to be tested shall be installed in the board in accordance with Figure 2.
The test installation shall consist of (see Figure 2):
— a test box where air velocity is negligible (see design data given in Figure 2).

The test box shall be rigid enough to avoid a pulsing air flow. Displacement of more than 2 mm shall
not be accepted on any face under the given test conditions;

— a means for measuring static pressure inside the test box relative to the surrounding space with an
uncertainty in accordance with 5.1.2.2;

— a measuring duct with an air flow meter and air flow straightener in accordance with the series
EN ISO 5167. Other measurement devices may be used, provided they allow measurements with an
uncertainty in accordance with 5.1.2.2;

— a fan with means to vary the pressure difference across the air transfer device, covering the range of
Table 4.

The test facilities shall have a range from 0 Pa to 100 Pa.

5.1.2.2 Uncertainty of measurement

The pressure difference shall be measured with an uncertainty lower than (0,2 + 0,03 x measured value)
(Pa).
The air flow rate shall be measured with an uncertainty lower than (0,2 + 0,03 x measured value) (l/s).
NOTE The combined uncertainty of measurement result in a total accuracy of the test method in the range of
3 % to 5 %.

5.1.3 Test procedure

According to the type of the air transfer device, the measurements shall be taken for the following
minimum number of points, each taken within one of the pressure difference ranges (bands) given in
Table 3:
a) for fixed air transfer devices: 8 points (matched with the operational range of the air transfer device
as stated by the manufacturer);

b) for manually adjustable air transfer devices: 8 points at maximum opening and 8 points at minimum
opening if this differs from the closed position (matched with the operational range of the air transfer
device as stated by the manufacturer);

c) for other air transfer devices (e.g. pressure controlled air transfer devices): 12 points (all the
12 bands) shall be measured. If steady-state conditions cannot be achieved in some bands, the
corresponding points shall be deleted and this shall be stated in the test report. If these air transfer
devices can be adjusted manually, they shall be tested at maximum and minimum opening if this
differs from the closed position.

The environmental conditions existing during the tests such as temperature and barometric pressure
shall be recorded.
Air temperature, Ʌa, shall be (20 ± 5) °C. During the test, air temperature, Ʌa, shall not vary more
than ± 2 °C.

11
,6(1
EN 13141-1:2019 (E)

The test shall be carried out by continuously increasing (or continuously decreasing) the pressure
difference across the air transfer device.
Where the air transfer device contains a movable part, a first series of measurement shall be made with
continuously increasing the pressure difference, and then a second series shall be made with
continuously decreasing it. At each point, the couple (pres•—”‡†‹ˆˆ‡”‡…‡ȟp, volume flow rate qv,meas)
shall be recorded when steady-state conditions are achieved. The volume flow rate qv,meas may be directly
measured or alternatively calculated from the measured value of mass flow rate qm.
The air permeability of the test equipment shall be measured with the test specimen sealed, over the
same range of pressure differences used during the performance testing of the specimen. The air
permeability of the test equipment shall generate a leakage lower than 1 l/s at 100 Pa. The air
permeability of the test equipment shall be reported in the test report.
5.1.4 Analysis of results

For fixed or manually adjustable air transfer devices, it shall be checked whether the volume air flow rate
follows a relationship as given by Formula (1).

To that effect, the measurements recorded according to 5.1.3 shall be plotted on a log-log diagram and a
regression line ln q v,m
ln C n ˜ ln ' p m shall be searched by an appropriate least squares method.

For Formula (1) to be valid in terms of this document, n shall be in the range of 0,5 to 1,0 and the
coefficient of determination (r2) of the regression line shall be greater than or equal to 0,98.
The measured results shall be corrected if temperature and barometric pressure are different from
standard conditions (20 °C and 101 325 Pa), using Formula (2) and Formula (3).

measurement as described in 5.1 after having reversed the air transfer device under test or board.
The results shall be recorded in the test report.
5.3 Air tightness when closed

The “air tightness when closed” shall be tested by carrying the same flow rate/pressure characteristic
measurement as described in 5.1 after having closed the air transfer device under test.
limerick, 14/02/2020, IHS Global Ltd

The result shall be recorded in the test report.

5.4 Free area

Free area shall be determined with the air transfer device at maximum opening position.

5.5.3 Test procedure

5.5.3.1 General

Air temperatures, Ʌi, and air velocities, vi, within the test room are measured at various positions (i)
(minimum 75) of a zone of the test room limited to 1,8 m above floor level, 0,5 m from any wall and 0,1 m
from the floor. The number and position of the measurement points are specified in Figure 4.
Instrumentation requirements shall be as given in EN 13182 for velocity measurements in the occupied
zone and for temperature measurements as given in EN 12238.
The airflow pattern depends on both the outdoor temperature and pressure difference.
For externally mounted air transfer devices, the air velocity and temperature measurement shall be
‡š’”‡••‡†ˆ‘”…‘„‹ƒ–‹‘•‘ˆȟp ƒ†ȟɅ chosen from the Table 8. The temperature difference may be
chosen according to the intended climate conditions.
