Solve the following questions:

1. Determine the capacitance of:


(a) A 1-ft length of 35B/U coaxial cable which has an inner conductor 0.1045 in. in
diameter, a polyethylene dielectric (_r = 2.26 from Table C.1), and an outer conductor
that has an inner diameter of 0.680 in.
(b) A conducting sphere of radius 2.5 mm, covered with a polyethylene layer 2 mm thick,
surrounded by a conducting sphere of radius 4.5 mm.
(c) Two rectangular conducting plates, 1 cm by 4 cm, with negligible thickness, between
which are three sheets of dielectric, each 1 cm by 4cm, and 0.1mmthick, having dielectric
constants of 1.5, 2.5, and 6.

2. Vector field E is given by E = R 5Rcos - 12/R sin cos + 3sin: Determine the
component of E tangential to the spherical surface R = 2 at point P = (2, 30̊ , 60̊).

3. Start with the potential function, V=Ax+B, and find the capacitance of a parallel-
plate capacitor of plate area S, plate separation d, and potential difference V0
between plates.

4. A parallel-plate capacitor is filled with a non-uniform dielectric characterized by


ϵr = 2 + 2 × 106 x2, where x is the distance from one plate in meters. If S =
0.02m2 and d = 1 mm, find C.

5. Let V = 2xy2z3 and ϵ = ϵ0. Given point P (1, 2, −1), find.


(a) V at P;
(b) E at P;
(c) ρν at P;
(d) The equation of the equipotential surface passing through P;
(e) The equation of the streamline passing through P.
(f) Does V satisfy Laplace’s equation?

6. Given the spherically symmetric potential field in free space, V = V 0 e-r/a, find.
(a) pv at r = a;
(b) The electric field at r = a;
(c) The total charge.

7. A current filament carrying 15 A in the az direction lies along the entire z-axis. Find
H in rectangular coordinates at: (a) P A (√20, 0, 4); (b) PB (2, −4, 4).
8. Calculate the value of the vector current density:

(a) In rectangular coordinates at P A (2, 3, 4) if H = x2 z ay – y2 x az;


(b) In cylindrical coordinates at PB (1.5, 90◦, 0.5) if H =2ρ (cos 0.2φ) aρ;
(c) In spherical coordinates at PC (2, 30◦, 20◦) if H = (1/sin θ) aθ.

9. Evaluate both sides of Stokes’ theorem for the field H = 6xyax − 3y2 ay A/m and the
rectangular path around the region, 2 ≤ x ≤ 5, −1 ≤ y ≤ 1, z = 0. Let the positive direction
of dS be az.
10. Given H = (3r^2/ sin θ)aθ + 54r cos θ aφ A/m in free space:
(a) Find the total current in the aθ direction through the conical surface θ = 20◦, 0 ≤ φ ≤
2π, 0 ≤ r ≤ 5, by whatever side of Stokes’ theorem you like the best.
(b) Check the result by using the other side of Stokes’ theorem.
