The development will include commercial office space, research labs, testing and related facilities,
technology park/light manufacturing, buildings, sustainable utility and power infrastructure, a
landmark office building, a hotel with serviced apartments, a university with research facilities, a
student housing and selected apartments, sport facilities with green areas/parks, etc.
Fieldwork activities extended over the period January 20th 2008 to March 3rd 2008.
The report presents the factual and engineering interpretation of field and laboratory data carried out
on the whole MASDAR Development site. A summary of the field activities and methodologies
followed by Fugro Middle East are described in the report.
Generally, the top sedimentary sequences are represented by interbedded aeolian and
estuarine/food-plain deposits represented by loose and very loose to medium dense fine grain SAND
and medium to coarse grain SILT, also known as sabkha deposits. The lower part of the coarse
material sequence is generally represented by dense to very dense medium to coarse SAND marine
deposits, sometimes overlaying thin marine SILT. The top of rock has been identified in all boreholes
at various depths as a result of collapsing during the diagenetic transformation of the gypsum layer.
The rock sequence is generally composed of an interbedded sequence of SILTSTONE,
CLAYSTONE and GYPSUM with some locally developed CALCARENITE. The upper rock sequence
is generally less competent in term of strength being described as very weak to weak being
represented most probably by a weathered horizon. As no correlation could be derived in term of
rock lithology, the report will consider division into layers based on the strength of rock only.
The groundwater level on site was identified at various depths ranging between +1.50m NADD and
+1.90m NADD. A series of standpipes were installed for which continuous long term groundwater
reading by use of “divers” are further to be presented.
Shallow and deep foundations are proposed in the report as suitable foundation option to safely
support the proposed design structures. The sulphate and chloride contamination of the soil and rock
has also been considered for appropriate concrete type recommendations.
The development will include commercial office space, research labs, testing and related
facilities, technology park/light manufacturing, buildings, sustainable utility and power
infrastructure, a landmark office building, a hotel with serviced apartments, a university with
research facilities, a student housing and selected apartments, sport facilities with green
areas/parks, etc
This report presents the factual and engineering interpretation of field and laboratory data
carried out on the whole site. Fieldwork was performed from January 20th 2008 to March 3rd
2008.
The site location is indicated on the locality plan, Plate 1. All field activities are indicated on
the site plan, Plate 2.
The proposed MASDAR development has a site area of approximately 6 square kilometres. It
is located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and 75 minutes from Dubai
downtown, adjacent to Abu Dhabi International Airport, on the east of Khalifa City. It is
bordered on the north and south by two major roads, one of which leads to the airport, the
other towards Dubai.
The geology of the United Arab Emirates and the Arabian Gulf area has been substantially
influenced by the deposition of marine sediments associated with numerous sea level changes
The Arabian Plate is separated from the Iranian Fold Belt by the Arabian Gulf. It is believed
that a tilting of the entire Arabian Plate occurred during the early Permian period, resulting in
uplift in southern Yemen and depression to the northeast, associated with igneous intrusions
in the northeast. Subsequent tectonic movements, peripheral to the folding of the Iranian
Zagros Range, during the Plio-Pleistocene age contributed to the formation of both the
Arabian Gulf depression and the mountainous regions shared by the United Arab Emirates
and Oman.
Variations in sea level over time have resulted in the accumulation of numerous marine
formations over the Arabian landmass.
Conditions in the Abu Dhabi area essentially consist of a linear coastline dissected by ancient
channels/creeks. Superficial deposits consist of marine sands and silts in coastal zones. In
addition, wind erosion, capillary action and evaporation has led to extensive sabkha deposits
in certain areas, notably around the creeks forming hypersaline deposits. These superficial
deposits overlay alternating beds of calcarenite, carbonate sandstone, gypsum, sands and
cemented sands.
3.0 FIELDWORK
The borehole locations are indicated on Plate 2, relative to the proposed site layout and
existing features. Field test results are presented in Appendix A. The presentation of field
results is preceded by a “symbol legend for geotechnical logs” and a “summary of soil and
rock definitions”, on Plates A1.1 to A1.3, and A2 respectively.
All boreholes locations were set out in accordance with the Client’s instructions. The contractor
surveyor on site set out the exploratory boreholes. The coordinates system for the test
locations are based on UTM zone 40, Clark 1880 ellipsoid and elevations are to Abu Dhabi
Datum (NADD).
The “as drilled” coordinates and elevations are given on the individual borehole logs in Appendix A
and summarized in Plates 3.1 to 3.2.
Twenty-one (21) boreholes were drilled on the whole MASDAR Development site as follows:
• Ten (10) boreholes down to 50.0m below existing ground surface
• Four (4) boreholes down to 30.0m below existing ground surface
• Seven (7) boreholes down to 20.0m below existing ground surface
The boreholes were advanced through soil deposits (including variably cemented sands) using
standard coring equipment and techniques.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were conducted at regular intervals within the soil layers in
order to estimate the relative densities and obtain samples for classification purposes. Test
intervals were generally 1.0m.
SPTs were conducted in accordance with British Standard BS 1377: Part 9:1990, “Methods of
The aggregate number of blows to drive the sampler over the final 300mm was termed the “N”
value and considered indicative of the soil’s in-situ relative density. Where a penetration of
300mm was not achieved due to the density or degree of cementation of the deposits
encountered, the number of blows and distance driven were recorded on the borehole logs.
Rotary coring was carried out in the boreholes, using double tube, ‘’HWF’’ size core barrels,
fitted with face discharge, impregnated diamond bits, producing a nominal core diameter of
76mm. Water was added to assist cable percussive boring and to stabilise each hole during
in-situ testing.
The core runs were generally 1.0m to 3.0m long. Where required, runs were altered in order to
maximize core recovery. Water was added to assist stabilise each hole during in-situ testing.
During coring water was used as the flushing medium and care was taken to adjust the water
pressure to obtain the optimum core recovery. Where necessary guargum (a natural starch)
polymer based was added to the flush water to aid in core recovery, particularly in poorly indurate
rocks.
Disturbed SPT and bulk soil samples collected during drilling were retained in sealed, labelled
plastic jars. Core samples were carefully transferred from the core barrel to purpose-built
wooden core boxes. Consecutive core runs were separated within the core boxes with labelled
core spacers and then wrapped in clear plastic to preserve moisture for possible laboratory
testing.
The samples were transported to Fugro’s laboratory in Abu Dhabi for logging and sampling.
Representative samples were selected for laboratory testing to assist with sample descriptions
and determination of engineering properties of the soils and rocks. The cores were
photographed and copies of these are presented in Appendix D of this report.
Careful attention was paid during boring and drilling to the existence of groundwater.
Groundwater levels were recorded at suitable breaks in boring operations, at the beginning
and end of each shift. These levels are given on the borehole logs.
Forty-one (41) trial pits were excavated on the whole MASDAR Development site as follows:
• Twenty-one (21) JCB-excavated trial pits down to 3.0m below existing ground surface
• Eighteen (18) hand-excavated trial pits down to 1.5m below existing ground surface
• One (1) hand-excavated trial pit down to 1.20m below existing ground surface
• One (1) hand-excavated trial pit down to 1.00m below existing ground surface
The exploratory trial pits were JCB-excavated and hand-excavated on site in locations
provided by Client. The JCB-excavated trial pits were 3.0 x 2.5m at the base with a maximum
investigation depth of 3.0m below existing ground surface, while the hand-excavated trial pits
were 1m x 1m at the base with a maximum investigation depth of 1.0m below present ground
level. Over the whole period of excavation, the trial pits were fenced off for security reasons.
The trial pits were mapped and sampled, each layer being carefully documented.
Trial pits were backfilled in layers not exceeding 300mm and thoroughly compacted using a
heavy hand hammer on completion of the investigations.
Individual trial pit logs are presented in Appendix A on Plates A5.1 to A5.41 while trial pits
photographs are presented in Appendix E.
Variable head permeability tests were performed in accordance with the relevant procedures
of British Standard BS 5930. The test was performed as a down-hole test through casing.
The variable head test was commenced by filling the test hole/piezometer with water (falling
head test. The down-hole water level is then monitored over time as it equalises again with the
ambient groundwater level.
The in-situ permeability of the soil layer at the base of the casing (i.e. at the intake) was
estimated, from the test results, using the semi-empirical methods of Hvorslev as outlined by
BS 5930. “Intake factors” were calculated according to the relevant BS 5930 guidelines
corresponding to the schematic boundary conditions inferred. As the site shows a very low
permeability and tests would have taken too long to be completed the general approach to
compute permeability has been taken. Permeability results are summarized in Table 1 below:
The method for measuring infiltration rate in Trial pits was detailed in section 1.1.4.e of Scope
of soil investigation. The trial pits operated were 1mx1m for 1m depth. The pit was filled with
water and let to seep overnight. The filled up to 50cm and height of water was recorded for
30minutes. The calculation method suggested in section 1.1.4.e is the BRE Digest 365
“soakaway design”. Whereas the test method forced a record of height for a closed time
frame, the BRE Digest 365 procedure requires record of time need for a fixed height of water.
Thus there was incompatibility between procedure and interpretation. However, the BRE
Digest 365 allows for some deviance in interpretation method but warns about infiltration rates
that might return values with a factor of 2. The following Table 2 presents the results of the
calculated infiltration rates.
A total of twenty (20) in-situ density tests were performed to directly measure the relative
densities of existing soil layers with respect to the corresponding moisture/density relationship
determined by laboratory testing. The in-situ density testing was performed by sand
replacement method in accordance with ASTM 1556 and 2216. The results will be
summarised in tabular form with the laboratory test results in Appendix B.
Plate load testing was performed on a prepared, even surface, at shallow depths. The tests
were performed by centrally applying a vertical, compressive load to a circular steel plate. The
plate size had a 600mm diameter.
The load was provided by reaction against a heavy vehicle. It is generally preferable to have a
minimum available reaction load of 15t.
Each test generally comprised an initial load/ unload/ reload/ unload cycle. Load stages were
applied to the plate incrementally up to the maximum available bearing pressure. Loading
increment was in the range of about 50 to 100kPa, depending on the maximum load. At each
load stage, plate settlement was monitored against time, as load was held constant, until
In order to monitor groundwater levels during and after the fieldwork standpipe piezometers
were installed in the selected boreholes at a maximum depth of 20m or shallower below
existing ground level. The standpipe comprised of 2” uPVC pipe, slotted over the lower 5m
and would be installed and surrounded by fine gravel to about 0.5m above the slotted section.
The sections below and above the filter were capped by a 0.5m thick bentonite seal and the
remainders of the borehole (above and below the bentonite seal) were backfilled with a grout
using a bentonite / cement grout.
The top of each standpipe was protruded approximately 400mm above the surrounding
ground level, encased in concrete and fitted with a threaded screw top for protection and ease
of access.
The standpipes were monitored during the fieldwork. A schematic detail of the piezometer is
presented in Plate A6.
A program of laboratory testing is performed on selected samples of soil and rock in the
boreholes. Details of the tests undertaken and quantities are given in Table 3. In general,
laboratory testing has been performed in accordance with ASTM and British Standard
procedures.
Test laboratory results have been used to assist with the classification and determination of
relevant physical and mechanical properties of soil and rock samples. Chemical test results
have been used to determine the corrosion potential of the soils and rocks. Laboratory test
results are presented in Appendix B.
The subsurface profile encountered is illustrated diagrammatically with a graphic log cross-
section presentation in Appendix A, on Plates A3.1 to A3.5. Full details of the strata
encountered are given on the Borehole logs in Appendix A, Plates A4.1.1 to A4.21.2. The
borehole observations and test results generally indicate slightly variable subsurface condition.
The superficial deposits are generally represented by coarse grain sedimentary sequences of
diverse origin. The upper unit (GL down to +2.00 mNADD) is represented by an “imported
material” described as medium dense, light brown to reddish, poorly to uniform graded, fine to
medium grain SAND. The term “imported material” (“made ground” in the borehole logs) is
used herein to describe a lithology different than the other lithologies identified in
boreholes/trial pits. It has all the characteristics of the wind-driven AEOLIAN SAND (sand
dune). Immediately below these aeolian sands, over an extend of more than 2.40m
(+2.00mNADD to
-0.40mNADD), an interbedded horizon of very loose to loose, poorly graded, fine to medium
grain SAND and medium to coarse grain SILT of low plasticity was identified in all of the
boreholes/trial pits. The horizon shows cycles of continuous transgressions and regression of
the marine sediments over an existing food-plain. Within the upper part of the sequence the
groundwater level has been encountered. Due to high heat/sun exposure, the groundwater
evaporates straight from the groundwater level driving the salts into the upper soil deposits,
salts which later will precipitate due to over-saturation. This effect is well-known in the area as
the main mechanism to generate the sabkha deposits. The chemical analysis over the
soils/water collected in the field shows that the horizon from +2.00mNADD to -0.40mNADD
can generally be described as sabkha.
The third coarse grain unit identified in boreholes (-0.40mNADD to -2.40mNADD) is mainly
characterized as loose to medium dense, poorly graded to well graded, fine to medium and
coarse grain silty/clayey SAND belonging to the marine sedimentary sequences. This unit,
with depth, pro-grades into a coarser grain size unit, also marine in origin. It is generally
The bedrock surface was identified in boreholes at variable depth, ranging from -1.01mNADD
in borehole BH-106B to -8.10mNADD in borehole BH-100 with a dipping trend from east to
west. The particular case encountered in BH-100 might be the result of collapsed old cavities
formed during the diagenesis process that took place over the gypsum layer, process
responsible for the transformation of the more competent crystalline gypsum into the less
competent sensitive clay. The clays that are normally formed during this transformation belong
to the smectites and vermiculites group being generally characterized by a large change in
volume with the addition of water.
On location where top of “rock” was encountered at the highest, as in MIST area and around
BH103, the top part presents advance weathering and in some place absence of any recovery
for 0.5m heights at depth around 8.5m below current ground level. These high level of rocks
might be on the way to dissolve.
Even though no open cavities were identified on site during this initial investigation, only
decimetric voids of no recovery, cavities might have developed during the diagenetic
transformation of gypsum salts or dissolution of the calcareous Siltstone that the wide spread
boreholes could not detect. During further construction process, should cavities appear, a grid
of destructive boreholes with record of drilling parameter is proposed herein to determine the
volume extent of the anomaly.
The groundwater level on site was identified at various depths between +1.50mNADD and
+3.00mNADD.
A 100m deep, open borehole was drilled. Slotted two-inch PVC pipe was grouted and sealed
on the top 5m and the bottom 5m. Divers were installed at 1m above water level (for the
Barometric and air temperature diver) and at -0.66mNADD for the under-water diver.
The following Figure 1, shows contour and 3D map of the top of rock level.
Based on the information collected in the field, and the examples learnt from the previous
experience, deep foundation represents the most suitable foundation system for all the
structures further designed on site. Shallow foundation might also be considered but ONLY for
the small secondary structures which can go through partial or permanent damage without
jeopardizing the city operation and life quality.
As Rock Horizon 1 has generally been described as similar to Brine, and Rock Horizon 2 is
still unstable in terms of soundness, the bearing layer for any deep foundation on site must be
Rock Horizon 3. Thus, piles minimum toe level should be below -14mNADD. In order to
confirm this, some additional test could be carried out to determine rock constitution and
evaporates content with depth (e.g. Petrographic analysis, chloride and sulphate content).
The purpose of the investigation was to carry out a preliminary geotechnical investigation to
ascertain ground conditions and provide preliminary geotechnical data for civil engineering
needs to estimate the size of detailed investigations and complete the design of the Masdar
Development in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Neither detailed foundation layout nor structural loads were provided by Client or made
available to Fugro by the time of preparation of this report.
Due to the ground conditions encountered and the variety of structures that might be placed in
the field, shallow and deep foundations are considered suitable to safely support the designed
structures. As already stated in Section 5.0 on Page 13 shallow foundation are recommended
for small secondary structures which might go through partial, total or permanent damage
without affecting their immediate environment.
Based on the information provided by Client, it is understood that the final elevation of site will
reach +5.50mNADD, approximately 1m higher that the present average elevation. The upper
aeolian sand does not represent as is a suitable foundation layer. Excavating and replacing it
might require extensive field work activities that are time and energy consuming. Thus, the
most adapted solution would be to select an adequate fill (addressed in section 6.2.2) and
construct an engineered fill based on mixing this additional material with the top sand existing
in the top layer on site. Only the very surficial materials containing vegetal detritus and wind
blown dust would have to be purged. If mixing of top soil in not practical or feasible, dynamic
replacement is an alternative.
Ground improvement using dynamic replacement technique can be applied to the bearing
stratum to increase its capacity, if shallow foundations are to be used.
The weight is dropped onto the area to be compacted in a specific pattern and number of
stages, so as to achieve the strengthening of soil over the entire area of construction on depth
to 6m, depending on the type of soil and technique used. After dropping the weight, a crater
The result of mixing the upper Aeolian sand with imported approved material will result in well
graded SAND:
• After appropriate compaction (as per recommendations given in Section 6.2.2 on
Page 18) the mix material will results in an equivalent
3
o Bulk density of 18kN/m ;
o Internal Friction Angle of 33 degrees
o Elastic Modulus = 35 MPa
• The isolated pads providing local support will be limited to 1.0m to 3.0m width but
under some conditions could be extended to 5.0m.
• If raft foundation need to be used, as the sabkha layer identified below the aeolian
sand will generate settlements difficult to predict, a minimal number of piles will be
needed under the raft
• The maximum shallow foundation depth will not exceed 2.0m below final proposed
grade
• Slabs on grade for non loaded area will be treated as pavements and parking areas
• The foundation layers are continuous and almost horizontal below the foundation
• There is no large variability between the geotechnical parameters within each layer
• All the capacity values used in this report consider a resultant force (load) of not more
than 5 degree deviation from the vertical axis, with limited eccentricity.
The geological classification of soils/rocks follows closely the depth variation of the
geotechnical parameters. In light of this approach, the following statistical and analytical steps
were made:
• For the coarse and fine grain materials (Aeolian Sand and Marine Sediments), the
measured SPT ‘N’ values versus elevation were plotted and presented in Plate 4.
• All values of UCS versus elevation are presented in Plate 5 and classified in terms of
rock type variation. The UCS values tested in the laboratory were measured only from
good quality, intact rock samples. Therefore a lower bound UCS design profile is
As described in the subsurface condition section (Section 5.0 on Page 8), no correlation could
be traced on site for the rock lithologies. The rock type marine sediments are interbedded with
large lateral changes in facies. The diagenetic process that takes place over the gypsum layer
and the collapse structures makes even more difficult to trace the layers. As the failure of the
foundation is characterized not by the failure of the rock material but rather of the secondary
developed materials, a more conservative approach was taken to limit the UCS and E-
modulus values to the lower bound values.
Generally, all tests performed were within the expected range values for soil and rock.
The recommended design parameters are summarized in Table 5. These parameters provide
the vision of the sub-soil conditions as foreseen in the area and can be used as basis of all
geotechnical design.
As no information related to the design structures were made available to Fugro by the time of
reporting, the present geotechnical report will treat shallow foundations (continuous strip and
isolated footings) as well as deep foundations.
Based on the lithology identified in boreholes and as per discussion in Section 5.0, only light
secondary structures should be placed on shallow foundations, structures that might go
through temporary damage without jeopardizing life quality. Any building and primary
infrastructures should be placed on piles.
6.2.1 Shallow foundations
As discussed in Section 5.0 above, the top 2.0m of soil (aeolian sand) is free of “evaporites” or
“Sabkha” type deposits. As per information provided by Client, the final level will also be
elevated by an additional 1m (+5.50mNADD).
As the upper aeolian sand does not represent a suitable foundation layer, mixing with imported
approved material should be considered (see assumptions made on Page 15). The selection
of materials must comply with guidelines provided in Section 6.2.2.
However, it is recommended to allow for a good bearing soil treatment before installation of
footings by means of placement of well compacted base course material to avoid any water
flow from altering the material properties, as the lower “sabkha” type deposits are very
sensitive to water and groundwater variations. Any shallow foundation should be implemented
on site in a way that eliminate any surface water infiltration into the lower bearing layers. The
use of geo-membranes or good draining materials might have to be considered in this case.
Allowable bearing capacites are dependent on the shear strength of the soil and the tolerance
Consequently, the shallow foundation design should be approached with care as the
behaviour of the sabkha type deposits is hard to predict. The allowable bearing capacities as
calculated through conventional methods might return quantities that do not reflect true
behaviour. Shallow foundation recommendation will then be given by limiting bearing
pressures from the structure. This limited pressures are provided in Table 6 were limited
either by differential settlement (15mm) or total settlement (25mm). All calculations were done
using a factor of safety 3. The length/width ratio for the continuous strip foundation was
assumed to be 6:1.
The recommended maximum bearing pressures are lower that the allowable bearing
capacities.
Bearing capacities have been estimated in accordance with classical bearing capacity theory,
considering bearing capacity factors recommended by Vesic. Settlement estimates for layered,
predominantly sandy soils, have been based on the Boussinesq elastic theory.
When excavating to foundation level care should be taken not to disturb the underlying strata.
Any disturbed/loose material or “soft pockets (of silt or peat)” encountered at foundation level
should be removed and replaced with properly compacted engineering fill. Prior to foundation
construction, the soil at foundation level should be compacted to 95% of maximum dry density
as determined from a modified Proctor test. The compacted surface should then be protected
by immediately covering with a layer of concrete blinding. As a guideline, it is suggested that
the blinding layer should be at least 100mm thick, and should extend 100mm to 150mm
beyond the edge of the reinforced concrete footing.
6.2.2 Earthworks
Excavation of the upper non-cemented granular deposits to a depth of 6.0m below the existing
ground level should be within the operating capacity of a typical excavator. However,
Typical retaining structures that could be implemented for temporary shoring are sheet pile
walls and king post wall.
As the structures on site might include basements, the preliminary design of any retaining
structures or slope stability structures should be done based on the soil parameters
recommended in Table 8 below:
In the above table K0 has been calculated using Jacky’s formula, with both Ka and Kp
determined using Rankine’s theory.
The presented coefficients assume normally consolidated soils with zero wall friction and
therefore tend to represent conservative values.
If pre-excavation retaining and shoring system are to be implemented (e.g. secant piles or
diaphragm wall), a friction coefficient of 0.66 can be introduced to calculated the earth
pressures.
For the selection of fill material, the following are some guidelines on three (3) selecting
categories of backfill based on destination and purpose. It is NOT recommended to use any
material excavated from site deeper than 1.5m below current ground level.
1. Type of soil : Inorganic and free draining with no greater than trace amounts of
organics, gypsum or salts.
2. Particle size : 50mm max.
3. Fines content : 15% max.
4. Gradation : Well graded
5. Liquid Limit : 25 max.
Fill should be placed in loose layers not exceeding 225mm thickness and each layer should be
compacted with suitable equipment to a minimum 95% of its Proctor maximum dry density.
1. Type of soil : Granular or silty soil with no greater than trace amounts of
organics, gypsum or salts.
2. Particle size : 75mm max.
3. Fines content : 30% max.
4. Gradation : Well graded
5. Liquid Limit : 40 max.
Fill should be placed in loose layers not exceeding 300mm thickness. Each layer should be
compacted to a minimum of 90% of its proctor maximum dry density except for the top 300mm
compacted to a minimum of 95%.
Fill should be placed in loose layers not exceeding 600mm and may be compacted using
bulldozers and/or other types of grading equipment.
With regards to pile foundations, it is considered that both driven cast in-situ and pre-cast
concrete piles or CFA piles would not be suitable in the ground conditions encountered. It is
unlikely that such driven piles/casing or CFA could be driven up to sufficient depth without
incurring considerable damage and would in all cases be unable to reach the recommended
foundat socket depth of -14mNADD.
Bored or augered cast in-situ piles embedded in the rock would however be considered
suitable.
Relevant design profiles are inferred from borehole observations and field and laboratory
testing. The design of bored cast in-situ piles embedded into rock is based on semi-empirical
relationships between pile capacity and intact rock strength and the rock mass quality. The
intact rock strength is represented by the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the rock
mass quality is established from the core factors such as TCR, SCR, RQD, weathering and
fracture state.
The unit skin friction and base resistance of piles was based on procedures given by “O’Neill
and Reese”, “Drilled Shafts Construction Procedures and Design Methods -1999”.
Accordingly, the unit skin friction (fs) and end bearing pressures (qp) were calculated and
summarized in Table 9.
Remark: The method adopted herein for calculating unit skin friction (O’Neill and Reese) been
proven to return prediction that are very much in agreement with observed load tests in the
UAE. This approach takes into consideration construction practice effect and rock/concrete
adhesion into design and therefore gives slightly reduced values.

Adopting the design parameters calculated above, the pile lengths needed to satisfy design
requirements will be extracted from Plate 8, Piles Working Capacity vs. Elevation. The factors
of safety used in compression are 2 for side friction and 3 in end bearing.
The minimum pile toe level recommended is -14.00m NADD as explained in Section 5.0
above. For this reason, no end bearing was given above this level. Piles must be socketed at
least 3 diameters in this bearing layer.
Top soil layers were neglected in the analysis. There will be no major backfilling on top of the
existing ground, thus, settlement within top soil can be ignored.
Several solutions are recommended if cavities are identified while drilling for pile foundations:
1) Employ a permanent casing to pass through the cavity. The drilled shaft should be
extended into the targeted bearing layer where it will derive its capacity
2) Pump grout into the cavity and wait for the grout to harden. Later proceed to drilling
through the grout into the floor of the cavity, again developing all of the resistance of
the drilled shaft in the natural rock below the floor of the cavity.
3) A recalculation of the pile capacity will be necessary by only accounting for the layers
below the cavity.
Remark: It is the engineer’s final decision to advice for the number and type of tests to be
applied.
Table 11 below presents the recommended horizontal instant (short lasting action) reaction
modulus profile for several diameters.
Abu Dhabi is classed as zone 0 to zone 1A, given soil and rock properties, according to
UBC97 Table 16J, the soil profile recommended is Sc.
In a foundation concrete perspective, protection will have to be provided for Chloride ingress in
concrete. Thus, ASTM Type II cement is at this point suggested.
Prior to finalizing and adopting a mix design, appropriate consultation with the concrete
specialist is needed.
The borehole logs and related information depict subsurface conditions only at the specific

APPENDICES TO SITE INVESTIGATION REPORTS
C.1 Groundwater
The drilling process can affect the level of groundwater measured in a borehole, particularly
when rotary drilling is performed since water is normally used as the drilling fluid. The water
level recorded in a borehole during boring or drilling does not therefore necessarily indicate
the actual level of the water table.
The comments and recommendations given in this report are subject to the limitations
imposed by the inherent nature of a site investigation.
Factual evidence has been obtained from the results of the boreholes and other field tests.
These only provide information about a relatively small column of the soils and rock and the
possibility of actual conditions differing must be recognised.
