GECAAP-18 - Art Appreciation

Name: Arbues, Bianca Lorelle A.

Section: 2CED1 B422

A. What is the moral message of the story behind this painting?

In his painted portraits, Bailly depicted attractive and expressive subjects in lively
domestic settings. His Vanitas painting contains collections of Objects symbolic
of the inevitability of death and the transience and vanity of earthly
achievements and pleasures it exhorts the viewer to consider mortality and to
repent.. He also included portraits of himself in these paintings, meaning to
illustrate the ephemeral nature of his own artistic accomplishments. Though he
sometimes intended his drawings as models for engravings, more often he made
them as independently displayed works of art.

B. The Artist's Choice of Subject

It is variously a symbol of strength, because of its sturdiness, and also purity and
innocence, because it is simple and unadorned. Bamboo is often included in
arrangements with pine boughs at New Year because of its auspicious nature. Pine
stands for longevity and endurance, while bamboo is strength and flexibility, they
symbolize the cardinal qualities of long life, hardiness and vitality. I represented
here to have created objects, both utilitarian and sculpture, of amazing grace and
complexity, showing the versatility of bamboo.
