Do you know what Wi-Fi 6 is? Don’t doubt that it is faster than the standard you know best, Wi-Fi 5. It is the future of
Wi-Fi and aims to bring a better experience to users all over the world. It is super-fast, more efficient, and allows the
density the industry requires today. Let’s look at it for more details.
5 WiFi Basics(12) - Wi-Fi 6
WHAT IS Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation in the series of Wi-Fi standards. You’re probably thinking “hey Farah, that sounds
great but what it does actually mean?”. Luckily I’m here to explain it to you :).

Wi-Fi 6 is the same Wi-Fi you have been using for more than a decade, just faster and more efficient. It’s like when
mobile internet jumps from 3G to 4G or from 4G to 5G. Since we consistently ask for more from our internet, for
example: streaming 4k movies, VR, and video games… It only makes sense that our Wi-Fi should get better.

To give an example: 4K video is double the bit rate of HD and nine times that of SD along. Along with the need to
accommodate for that increase in size; in 2022, there will be more digital traffic created in that year than in all of the
32 years the internet has existed combined. About 4.8 billion people will be mobile users and mobile devices in
business will reach 28.5 billion. That means, there will be a higher need for faster, more robust Wi-Fi devices.

WHY MIGHT YOU CARE?

One of the selling points of Wi-Fi 6 is that it can perform better in crowded environments where a lot of devices are
connected to a single network. These are scenarios that you can find in large enterprises, airports, or sporting
events. Let me give you an example: Universities usually have maybe 30 000 students and cover that many acres.
With Wi-Fi 6 and its ability to support a large number of users, the number of Access Points covering the same area
and the same number of users using Wi-Fi 6, will be less than that required if they deploy Wi-Fi 5. All of that is
important, because even though it’s rated at 39% faster throughput, so about 600 Mb/s versus 433 Mb/s in WIFI-5
on a single 80 MHZ, 5GHZ channel thanks to packing more data into each payload.

Wi-Fi- 6 has some truly game-changing features when it comes to multi-client access that are going to result in far
higher overall data rates and less waiting.

Huawei AirEngine APs are the industry's only APs with 16 spatial streams and therefore achieves a throughput rate
of up to 10.75 Gbps, delivering fiber-like network experience for heavy-traffic services such as AR/VR and 4K video.
On top of that, Huawei AirEngine APs has 16 built-in Smart Antennas and use the 5G-powered beamforming
algorithm, achieving not only a 20% wider coverage but also stronger and more focused signals than traditional
antennas. The end result is full coverage free from blind spots.

So this widening of the highway is a big part of what is going to make the generation six so critical to making Wi-Fi
usable in large venues but it’s not even close to the entire picture; The next huge innovation for large-scale
deployments was actually borrowed from cellular networks. With Wifi-6, the frequency range that would have made
up a traditional channel can be split using a technique called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access
(OFDMA). Do you know how one of the best pro tips for anyone living in an apartment is to use a scanner to what
channel your neighbors are on and then manually switch over to a different one? Well, forget about it!

OFDMA allows each band be it 20,40 or all the way up to 160 MHZ to be split up into multiple chunks as many as 78
sub-channels and each one of those can be allocated to a separate client.

Now, obviously, to make all of this work, the access point needs to get a little bit smarter. Fortunately, it did! With Wi-
Fi 6, an AP can

gets a schedule for when it is allowed to transmit and receive data. Now, hold on a second! I know that in the
computing world, scheduling a data transmission usually means increased latency which is one of the biggest issues
with Wi-Fi today. But in practice, what this means is less collision mitigation overhead, which means that there is
actually less waiting around.

Another fun feature of 'deterministic connections' is that they can be used to save power. You know you connected
smart light switch, your  asset tags, etc. Right now, they waste a ton of power constantly checking in with the
network. With scheduled check-ins called target wake-up time, your devices can check-in far less frequently
dramatically increasing their battery life.

The coolest thing about Wi-Fi 6 though is not the techie specs rather it’s the different experiences that it enables.
Have you ever tried to stealthily have a video chat at the back of a lecture hall or upload a video to YouTube from a
large event? It’s a total mess! I mean even something as stupid as breaking for lunch during a conference can
absolutely crush your mobile experience as everyone jumps on Facebook at exactly the same time.

Well, thanks to everything I have talked about already and actually a whole host of other new features including
better beamforming, spatial frequency reuse, and dynamic fragmentation which makes better use of the available
spectrum.

HUAWEI Wi-Fi 6 APPLICATIONS

Huawei Wi-Fi 6 ranks No. 1 in the global market (excluding North America), according to the report on global Wi-Fi 6
indoor AP market share from 2018 Q3 to 2019 Q3 by Dell'Oro Group, a leading independent market analysis, and
research firm.

Huawei is a leader in the Wi-Fi 6 market. With its AirEngine Wi-Fi 6, Huawei took the lead in deploying the industry's
first enterprise-class Wi-Fi 6 network in Shanghai as early as 2018. Since then, Huawei AirEngine Wi-Fi 6 has been
put into large-scale commercial use across countries and regions such as Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, South
Africa, China, and India.

BUT WHAT MAKES HUAWEI Wi-Fi 6 SPECIAL?

Huawei Wi-Fi 6 transforms Enterprises. In mobile face areas, for example, people are just walking, chatting, and
making phone calls. So, with Wi-Fi 5, you got an issue; When you’re roaming from one AP to another AP, your
service got disrupted, and also, when you go further, there are some blind spots where you won’t be able to connect
to the Wi-Fi at all. Fortunately, with Huawei Wi-Fi 6, they have a unique technology: smart antenna. With smart
antenna, the signal can track where the person is, so you won’t find any blind spot at all and they won’t be any
interruption when you’re roaming between the APS.

In the conference room, there are actually different devices that connect to the Wi-Fi. You might have video chat
conferences or you need images synchronized between the devices, all these types of applications need a lot higher
bandwidth than what Wi-Fi 5 can provide. With the technologies that I have mentioned earlier (OFDMA & new
MIMO), Wi-Fi 6 can provide higher bandwidth. Besides, Huawei has a unique technology called intelligent
application accelerations. This can ensure crucial applications run smoothly.

Huawei Wi-Fi 6 transforms production
In the production line, thee are massive cars and each car needs to upload quite a big software which will be a slow
operation using Wi-Fi 5, it may take like 30 minutes. That’s pretty inefficient. But with Wi-Fi 6, it will take only 4 min
for all 14 cars to upload this up too well.

Another scenario, when there are a lot of cameras installed to check the quality of the cars and because it needs to
record all the details, the camera need to upload quite high volume of data. As we said earlier, Wi-Fi 6 provides
more bandwidth, so in this case, it won’t be a problem for Wi-Fi 6. Huawei is the only vendor that can support up to
10 Gbps and beyond.

Another scenario of production is the training classroom. Nowadays, manufacturers are training their staff with AR,
and you know that AR requires quite high bandwidth and less latency. Wi-Fi 5 can’t support that. Wi-Fi 6 addresses
this problem with technologies like MU-MIMO and OFDMA which provide a lot higher bandwidth. MU-MIMO and
OFDMA are actually standard technologies defined by Wi-Fi protocols but Huawei is the only vendor who can
coordinate MU-MIMO with OFDMA.

Huawei Wi-Fi 6 transforms services
In the airport, for example, using wireless board loading 8k videos will take forever to load using Wi-Fi 5 but with Wi-
Fi 6, it’s going to short the time to 10 min, it’s a huge progress.

In shops, you will find that there are using electronic sales labels with IoT technology. As you know, the IoT networks
and Wi-Fi networks are two separate networks, they don’t use the same frequency, as a consequence, they might
interfere with each other. With Huawei Wi-Fi 6, they have a reserved slot for IoT extensions and you can just plug an
IoT module into the APS and you can have a convergent network with both Wi-Fi and IoT.

To conclude, We’re thrilled about the version numbers. It’s a simple, easy change that should have been made a
long time ago. It should make it much easier for normal people to understand Wi-Fi. After all, many people can get
faster Wi-Fi speeds by upgrading their home routers—but not everyone knows that.

However, the Wi-Fi Alliance has no power to force companies to use these version numbers, although they
“encourage” companies to adopt them. Some manufacturers may ignore these version numbers and just call the
new generation of Wi-Fi “802.11ax” instead. Many companies likely won’t be in a rush to rename the existing
802.11ac to Wi-Fi 5, either.

We hope most companies will quickly get on board with the new naming scheme.
