Stepfather denied bail, charged with sexual

assault of 11-yr-old
Trigger Warning: This article contains information of a sensitive nature. Details include the
sexual assault of a minor. The information can potentially be upsetting and may trigger
negative feelings or memories.

Police said a 38-year-old man was denied bail after appearing virtually before a Princes Town
Magistrate on Tuesday charged with the alleged sexual penetration of his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

In a statement, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said the accused, who will reappear
before the court on July 6, was denied bail by Magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine.

Police said the man was arrested and charged by WPC Ramroop, of the Southern Division Child
Protection Unit (CPU) on June 7 following a report made to police.

Police were told by a woman that she walked into her 11-year-old daughter’s bedroom in the wee
hours of June 7 where she allegedly discovered her husband having sexual intercourse with her
daughter.

The mother subsequently reported the matter to police who investigated and later charged the man
with one count of sexual penetration of a child.

Investigations into the case were headed by W/Superintendent (Ag.) Claire Guy-Alleyne, and
supervised by Insp (Ag.) Khan of the Southern CPU.

SONG :
Because Of You
Song by Kelly Clarkson

Lyrics
I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself ' cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side, so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side, so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I watched you die (I watched you die)

I heard you cry
Every night in your sleep
I was so young (and you're so young

+You should have known better (I was too young for you)
Than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain (you never saw me)
And now I cry
In the middle of the night
For the same damn thing

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

Because of you
Because of you

POEM :
Sexual Abuse Victim
Tears are always running down my face.
I hang my head low thinking, "What a disgrace?"
The tears are coming from all the damage you caused.
What do you want now, a round of applause?

I've watched you rape and molest me right before my eyes

Now the only thing left to do is cry
You stole my virginity without my consent
PLEASE tell me why this is the way it went

All I wanted was for you to get off of me

But getting you off of me just wasn't that easy
You hit me in my face then ripped my shirt
Then you pushed it in to the point where it hurt

I remember it like it was yesterday

Answer this, will I ever forget about this and be okay?
The thoughts are crucial & all I can do is cry
Sometimes I just think then ask myself "why didn't I die?"

The bastard didn't care if I lived or if I died

All he cared about was being satisfied
I feel dirty, I feel low, I feel used
I'll always know that I'm a victim of sexual abuse!

PLAN OF INVESTIGATION :
My topic Abuse with focus on Sexual Abuse was chosen to bring light on how
grown men are sexually abusing young men, women and children. As an English
student, I expect to gain a better understanding of the different genres of writing
like articles and reports, I also hope to improve in my written communication
skills. I intend to source an online article, a poem and a song from the internet. In
analyzing the use of language in the pieces, I would examine persuasive devices
used by the writers. It may reveal that the information I have gathered provided me
the acknowledgement of how deep rooted and sick the society we live in today
really is and also with a lot of sexual abuse cases not identified which is unjust.
Some problems I had encountered are the inability to detect author and personal
bias. I intend to overcome these problems by doing further research where needed.

REFELCTION 1 :
From the poem I learned that being a victim of sexual abuse leaves victims with
emotional trauma and the feeling of wanting to take their own life. I am now
mindful of the fact that we as individuals can only begin to imagine the emotional
pain and suffering these victims are going through. The song taught me of the fear
and trust issues a person can have as witness to sexual abuse. I now realize that
music allows both artists and listeners to connect with difficult topics, like sexual
abuse. The online article made me aware of the level of betrayal a person can make
possible and also have the ability to ruin a life before it even starts. I now realize
that age doesn’t matter to these sick bastards we have in today’s society. That
makes me as a young women feel so afraid to even walk the streets.

REFLECTION 2 :
The poem is written in a negative form of connotative writing. While the voice of
the speaker is direct due to the poem being written in the first person. The
speaker’s mood was hurt, anger and disgust. The length of lines are consistent
which shows the inner turmoil of the poet. The online article is factual based on
the information gathered from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. It is
analytical in text because of the accurate information presented by the author. With
the statistical data supporting the information presented, the formal register and
sensitive information can show the author targeting a mature audience. The song is
written in a form of poetic diction. The speaker’s voice is direct because the song
is written in the first person. While the speaker’s mood can be described as sad and
hopeless. The length of lines in the song are inconsistent which reflects the artiste
inner turmoil and despair.
REFLECTION 3 :

Thanks to the SBA process, I am now more confident approaching my teachers for
assistance and guidance. I am also able to express my personal opinions
confidently when talking to others. My research skills has developed due to
sourcing information and referencing. I was also able to develop my time
management skills. I am now aware that sexual abuse not only occurs to women,
but to men as well and sometimes on a larger scale. I also became aware of the fact
that sexual abuse is not age restricted, meaning that these predators go after anyone
regardless of age and gender. I would have never imagined that sexual abuse can
be such a deep rooted issue in today’s society. I would now use my knowledge on
this topic to try and get credible guest speakers to do podcasts and announcements
for the public to develop an awareness on this topic.
ORAL PRESENTATION PLAN :

What is the topic I have chosen?

The topic I have chosen for my oral presentation would be ‘Sexual Abuse’.

Which of the genres am I most interested in using to deliver my presentation :

drama, poetry, or prose?
The genre I have chosen to deliver my presentation would be ‘Prose (speech)’.

The sources that were used for the research of my topic would be an online article,
a poem and a song.
Online Article-(https://tt.loopnews.com/content/step-father-denied-bail-charged-sexual-assault-
11-yr-old)

Poem-(https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/sexual-abuse-victim )
Song-(https://www.google.com/search?q=because+of+you+lyrics&rlz )
