Non-Rotating Protectors (NRPs)

COMPATIBILITY WITH MPD SYSTEMS

1
Managed Pressure Drilling
 NRP’s are commonly used with managed
pressure drilling (MPD).
 The NRP assembly has a profile similar to a
tool joint and are installed near the
connection.
 NRP sleeves are made of polyurethane,
rubber and low-friction polymer, materials
similar to the rotating head elements.
 Lubricate NRP with pipe thread lubricate
or automatic oiler to reduce element
friction and wear.

MPD Operations
 Rotating control devices (RCD) are often used as a safety
device with no pressure held during drilling.
 NRP’s most often can pass through with minimal risk.
 WWT’s NRP’s have been used in countless onshore
applications using RCD’s. ( more than 200 jobs )
 NRP’s have been used in offshore applications up to 250psi
held on the RCD.
 The NRP diameter approaches the maximum allowable
diameter, the compliant sleeve can often pass through the
RCD element.
 Some pressure loss and leak is expected with single element
 Dual element can effectively eliminate the leakage
 NRP’s often installed below RCD. Often not necessary to run
NRP’s through the RCD.

Summary
 NRP sleeve OD can approach maximum pass through of
RCD with minimal pressure loss and leak.
 Short duration of pressure loss, with minimal to no effect
downhole.
 NRP’s are often installed well below the RCD, allowing
the well to be balanced before needing to strip NRP’s.
 RCD element can often be removed while tripping NRP’s.
 Increased wear life and reusability of RCD element.
 Dual elements can effectively eliminate leakage.
 NRP’s are no worse at wearing the element than standard
tool joints.
