3- Practice A
Read the following text (3.1) and the summaries (a)–(c). Rate them 1 (best) – 3.
Answer:
1 =Summery a is the best summery because it includes all the major key points.
2 = Summery c is moderate not best and not worst because it has not very important
examples.
3 = Summery b is worst summery because it included in correct information.

4 Practice B
Read the following text and underline the key points:
For most of the past century an inverse correlation between human fertility and
economic development has been found. This means that as a country got richer, the
average number of children born to each woman got smaller. While in the poorest
countries women often have eight children, the rate fell as low as 1.3 in some European
countries such as Italy, which is below the replacement rate. Such a low rate has two
likely negative consequences: the population will fall in the long term, and a growing
number of old people will have to be supported by a shrinking number of young.
But a recent study by researchers from Pennsylvania University suggests that this
pattern may be changing. They related countries’ fertility rates to their human

development index (HDI), a figure with a maximum value of 1.0, which assesses life
expectancy, average income and education level. Over 20 countries now have an
HDI of more than 0.9, and in a majority of these the fertility rate has started to
increase, and in some is approaching two children per woman. Although there are
exceptions such as Japan, it appears that ever higher levels of wealth and education
eventually translate into a desire for more children.

Complete the notes of the key points below

(a) Falling levels of fertility have generally been found in richer countries.
(b) In some, number of children born below the replacement rate.
(c) Two results: smaller populations and older people supported by a shrinking number
of young.
(d) Recent research claims that the pattern may be changed.
(e) Comparison of HDI (human development index: life expectancy, income and
education, with fertility found that in most highly rated (+0.9) countries, fertility rate
has started to increase.

Join the notes together and expand them to make the final summary. Check that
the meaning is clear and no important points have been left out. Find a suitable
title.
The increase in financial states of developed counties has led to a fatal decrease in the
fertility levels, and in most euro counties, children are born below the replacement rates,
this will lead to a country with needy elder people. Studies has shown that this problem
can be changed, these studies have proved that there are 20 counties have and HDI
(human development index that include life expectancy, income and education) of 0.9,
the maximum level is 1.

Summarise the summary in no more than 20 words.

elder people. Recent studies have showed that this may be changed.

Expensive toilets such as the Washlet are made in japan by the bathroom maker Toto. This
high price is due to the exceptional features of the toilet, e.g. privacy, hot seat and music. But
this toilet is restricted in Euro counties, due to electricity usage of the toilet.
