RATIONALE
Liquefaction contributed over 43% of secondary causes of damage to structures,
making it the biggest contributor among the lists.

Soil saturation, as one of the contributing factors to liquefaction, happens when

water entirely fills the gap between individual particles.

Tisa is a low-lying barangay in Cebu City, Philippines, that floods almost every time
it rains. One of the areas that gets the most flooding in Barangay Tisa is the Santa
Teresita Village.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the continuous flooding in Santa
Teresita to the saturation of the soil in the area as well as its susceptibility to soil
liquefaction.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Field collection of soil samples.

OUTPUT
If the soil is liquefiable, it is prone to ground failure and recommend soil improvement to mitigate
structural failures. If it is not, structures are lying on safe grounds and do not need soil improvement.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study mainly focuses on investigating the soil susceptibility to liquefaction
lying beneath Barangay Sta. Teresita, Tisa, Cebu City ground.

The researchers will not provide specific treatment methods to be taken in order
to resolve the problem.

The research will only determine the engineering properties of soil of the area
and identify its potential to liquefaction.

DEFINITION LIQUEFACTION

OF TERMS rapid loading reduces the strength and stiffness of a soil.

LIQUID LIMIT
water content at which the soil has such a small shear strength.

PLASTIC LIMIT
the water content at which the soil begins to crumble.
