ACTIVITY 3 - PONDER ON MEAD’S THEORY

PONDER ON MEAD’S THEORY!

According to Mead, the development of the self goes through the following
stages: imitation stage -> play stage -> games stage. Provide an example
behavior for each stage based on your personal experience in the past of
observing children. Then, explain the example behavior using Mead’s theory.

1. Imitation Stage

Example: I overheard children on the streets swearing.

Explanation: Children are sponges, reflecting what they usually hear or

exposed to, including inappropriate language.

2. Play Stage

Example: I saw a boy around the age of 6 wearing a costume and acting like
Spider-Man - popular comic-book superhero.

Explanation: The boy made an effort to appear and feel like a genuine
superhero.

3. Games Stage

Example: I noticed group of kids in my neighborhood playing catching ball.

Explanation: During the game, children developed self-awareness and

learned to follow game rules while bearing in mind their roles in the game as
well as their teammates.’
