History of US – UK Relations:

Diplomacy
- One of the first engagements between the US and the UK begin in 1584 when the first
‘short lived’ British colony is prepared, the English then settle in permanently in 1607 .’

- The US gains its independence from Great Britain in 1776.
- Large number of slaves are taken from the U.S. by the UK through the Revolutionary
War; “U.S. efforts to retrieve slaves amount to nothing, which leads to the conflict being
resolved in the ‘Treaty of Paris’ which effectively ends the war in 1783”, (Lindsay, 1920)
- The UK acknowledges U.S. independence after the American Revolutionary War comes
to an end in 1783.
- The two states form diplomatic relations in 1785
- The U.S. then proceeds to break relations when it declares war on the UK in the war of
1812 which stemmed from restrictions imposed on U.S. trade by the English and
Americas aspirations of increasing its territory
- Relations between the two countries are restored in 1815
- In 1986 the International Fund for Ireland is created to make funding available for
“projects to generate cross-community engagement and economic opportunity in
Northern Ireland (the United Kingdom). Since it began the U.S has been one of the main
contributors of the majority of the funds, with over $543 million given since the
establishment of the IFI.
- The U.S. flag raised in January 2018 on the new embassy building in Wandsworth
