ACTIVITY - 7

OBJECTIVE: To verify Basic Proportionality Theorem (Thales theorem).

MATERIAL REQUIRED: Two paper strips (each of size 1 cm wide and 30 cm long), cutter, adhesive, white
paper, thread, scale etc.

FIGURE FOR REFERENCE: Make a slider model of similar triangles to prove the theorem.

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION:

1. Make a cut out of a triangle PQR of any suitable dimensions.

2. Take a sheet of paper at least 2-3cm bigger in dimension on both sides (horizontally in width) and 4-5
cm bigger at the top and the bottom (vertically).

3. Take two graduated strips AC and BD (scale) and paste them vertically on both sides of the sheet as
shown in the figure.

4. Paste another similar graduated strip (scale) horizontally as shown in the figure.

5. Now, move the triangle up and down across the horizontal scale and measure the ratio of PE/EQ and
PF/FR.

6. Using this slider figure, verify the Basic Proportionality Theorem.

DEMONSTRATION:

1. Set the scale on vertical strips parallel to the base QR of D PQR, say at the points E and F. Measure the
distances PE and EQ and also measure the distance PF and FR. It can be easily verified that PE/EQ =
PF/FR. This verifies Basic Proportionality Theorem (Thales theorem).

2. Repeat the activity as stated above, sliding the scale up and down parallel to the base of the triangle
PQR and verify the Thales theorem for different positions of the scales.

APPLICATION: The theorem can be used to establish various criteria of similarity of triangles. It can also
be used for constructing a polygon similar to a given polygon with a given scale factor.
