enable specific types of user interaction.
A social media platform is a technological organization of several components divided
into a reliable core, which often offers generic functionalities, and a collection of
specialized modules. Modules that can be altered, adjusted, and increased by the
platform's owners or by third parties, like users, developers, or advertisers or
associates.
Social media can be conceived as platform is because how particular technologies are
coupled with forms of user interaction with particular business objective. We can
distinct social media platform by observe the main business aim for the platform
built. One of the most widely use social media platform is content-based sites. These
sites are built to share creation and sharing of content. For example: music, videos,
posts, or blogs.
Take Facebook as an example. As of January 2009, Facebook have been registered
more than 175 million active users. To show how large Facebook is, the population of
Brazil is 190 million and the population of Germany is only 80 million. Now Facebook
is the world’s largest social media platform, it makes it easy for users to connect and
share with family online. Facebook even change how companies makes business.
With the extraordinary number of users, companies would be investing more on
digital marketing. Instead of previous ways of marketing their products.
Facebook also become a database for business to get insights of the trend of world.
The time of user to be engage have been rising recently. According to the research,
almost every user will spend at least 2 hours on Facebook. To view posts or liked,
shared, reacted to any kind of information. For user, with the engagement, they can
easily know what the trend is, and wouldn’t felt left out of society; for business, the
engagement allows them to measure the pulse of potential buyers.
With the explanation of social media platform and the example of Facebook. We can
see that social media platform not only enable us to study about the behavior of
users, it also enable us to understand how the whole internet ecosystem develops.
