CHAPTER-1

INTRODUCTIONIONIII

1
INTRODUCTION

Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation
and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression
via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built-in social
media services currently available introduces challenges of definition; however, there are
some common features:

1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.

2. User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos,
and data generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of social
media.
3. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and
maintained by the social media organization.
4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a
user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

DEFINITION

The variety of evolving stand-alone and built-in social media services makes it
challenging to define them. The idea that social media are defined simply by their ability
to bring people together has been seen as too broad, as this would suggest that
fundamentally different technologies like the telegraph and telephone are also social
media. The terminology is unclear, with some referring to social media as social
networks or social networking services.

A 2015 paper] reviewed the prominent literature in the area and identified four common
features unique to then-current social media services:

1. social media are Web 2.0 Internet-based applications,

2. user-generated content (UGC) is the lifeblood of the social media organism.

2
3. users create service-specific profiles for the site or app that are designed and
maintained by the social media organization,
4. social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a
user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

In 2016, Merriam-Webster defined social media as "forms of electronic communication

(such as Web sites) through which people create online communities to share
information, ideas, personal messages.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Users typically access social media services via web-based technologies

on desktops and laptops, or download services that offer social media functionality to
their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets). When engaging with these services,
users can create highly interactive platforms through which individuals, communities,
and organizations can share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content or pre-
made content posted online. They "introduce substantial and pervasive changes to
communication between organizations, communities, and individuals." Social media
changes the way individuals and large organizations communicate. These changes are the
focus of the emerging fields of techno self studies. Social media differ from paper-based
media (e.g., magazines and newspapers) to traditional electronic media such as TV
broadcasting in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, interactivity, usability,
immediacy, and performance.

3
Social media outlets operate in a dialogic transmission system (many sources to many
receivers). This is in contrast to traditional media which operates under a monologic
transmission model (one source to many receivers), such as a newspaper which is
delivered to many subscribers, or a radio station which broadcasts the same programs to
an entire city. Some of the most popular social media websites are Baidu
Tieba, Facebook , Google+, Myspace, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tumblr,
Twitter, Viber, VK, WeChat, Weibo, WhatsApp, and Wikia. These social media websites
have more than 100,000,000 registered users.

In the United States, a 2015 survey reported that 71 percent of teenagers have a Facebook
account. Over 60% of 13 to 17-year-olds have at least one profile on social media, with
many spending more than two hours per day on social networking sites.According to
Nielsen, Internet users continue to spend more time on social media sites than on any
other type of site. At the same time, the total time spent on social media sites in the U.S.
across PCs as well as on mobile devices increased by 99 percent to 121 billion minutes in
July 2012, compared to 66 billion minutes in July 2011.For content contributors, the
benefits of participating in social media have gone beyond simply social sharing to
building a reputation and bringing in career opportunities and monetary income.

Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social media use. Social
media can help to improve an individual's sense of connectedness with real or online
communities, and social media can be an effective communication (or marketing) tool for
corporations, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, political parties,
and governments. At the same time, concerns have been raised about possible links
between heavy social media use and depression, and even the issues of cyberbullying,
online harassment and "trolling". Currently, about half of young adults have been
cyberbullied, and of those, 20% said that they have been cyberbullied regularly.Another
survey in the U.S. applied the Precaution Process Adoption Model to cyberbullying on
Facebook among 7th grade students. According to this study, 69% of 7th grade students
claim to have experienced cyberbullying, and they also said that it was worse than face-
to-face bullying.

4
Both the bully and the victim are negatively affected, and the intensity, duration, and
frequency of bullying are the three aspects that increase the negative effects on both of
them

Instagram

(also known as IG) is a photo and video-sharing social networking service owned
by Facebook, Inc. It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in
October 2010 exclusively on iOS. A version for Android devices was released a year and
6 months later, in April 2012, followed by a feature-limited website interface in
November 2012, and apps for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 in April 2016 and
October 2016 respectively.

The app allows users to upload photos and videos to the service, which can be edited with
various filters, and organized with tags and location information. An account's posts can
be shared publicly or with pre-approved followers. Users can browse other users' content
by tags and locations, and view trending content. Users can "like" photos, and follow
other users to add their content to a feed.

5
The service was originally distinguished by only allowing content to be framed in a
square (1:1) aspect ratio, but these restrictions were eased in 2015. The service also
added messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in a single
post, as well as "Stories"—similar to its main competitor Snapchat—which allows users
to post photos and videos to a sequential feed, with each post accessible by others for 24
hours each.

After its launch in 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity, with one million registered
users in two months, 10 million in a year, and ultimately 800 million as of September
2017. In April 2012, Facebook acquired the service for approximately US$1 billion in
cash and stock. As of October 2015, over 40 billion photos have been uploaded to the
service. Although praised for its influence, Instagram has been the subject of criticism,
most notably for policy and interface changes, allegations of censorship, and illegal or
improper content uploaded by users.

including photos, videos, audios, and documents. It has also added free live video
calling with high quality streaming to its features. It is a sensational app that has a
user base of over 1 billion. One can also create groups and connect with a number
of people at once. There are a profile photo and status slot, also a last seen panel,
the visibility of which can be managed in the settings. This is a mobile baaed app,
but the web version is also available, wherein users have to connect a code in their
phone and access the app in their desktop. The data is secure with end encryption.

12
TUMBLR

Tumblr is a blogging network, along with blogging it has a photo sharing network,
like Pinterest. It has enticing blog themes, content formats, and connecting facility with
other users, via the follow button. One can also share/re-blog or like other’s blogs.

13
QUORA

Quora is a dedicated network to information and knowledge where users

interact with each other over a meaningful information exchange. Typically, an
user posts a question and others answer it, more like Yahoo answers, but the
interface is more like Facebook. Questions like ‘ What are the Top Social
Networking Sites in the World’ are abundant. The users here are more serious and
non-bot. Quora was launched by two former employees of Facebook in 2009.

14
YOUTUBE

Founded in 2005, YouTube is one of the most popular video sites on the Web today.
Millions of videos have been uploaded and shared here, ranging from movie trailers to
amateur videos of cats - and everything in between.

Anyone with an Internet connection can share content on YouTube, whether they are
organizations with large budgets or an individual with a video camera. YouTube is
owned by Google, and is one of their most popular peripheral properties.

YouTube was the first large-scale video sharing site on the Web, and it is available in
nearly every country and over fifty different languages. Anyone can upload content here,
which makes for an utterly astonishing array of watchable content.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Misuse of instagram

Security and private consult

1. Incomplete Bio

A bio describes your brand and tells users what you stand for. The lack of a bio makes
you seem extremely unprofessional. Who are you? What do you stand for? What are your
offerings?

2. Misuse of hashtag

When you’re new to the app, it’s entirely possible to misuse hashtags on Instagram.
#iwasthin #dunnowhathappened #awesomefeels do not make sense. For those of you who
do not know how hashtags function, here’s something to remember: hashtags are used in
the process of discovery. Use your hashtags wisely. Research shows that posts with 11 or
more hashtags receive nearly 80% interaction, compared to just 22% when using 10 and
41% when using two (Instagram limits the number of hashtags allowed per post to 30).

3. No caption

If you want your followers to understand you product, make sure you tell them a story
through your caption. It will help your followers understand a little more about your
brand, along with improving chances for engagement in the form of comments.

4. No engagement

Instagram is not only about posting. You also need to do your bit and be involved with
your followers. When your fans see you interacting with them, they feel a personal
connect with the brand. And today, marketing is all about building relationships.

16
5. Lack of strategy

Whether you’re on Instagram to increase brand awareness, showcase a new offering, or

add a human element to your brand, each update should be adding value and help you
attain goals.

6. Over posting or Under posting

When you post multiple updates in a short time frame you’re overposting. When you post
once in a week, you’re underposting. The goal is to have a brand recall on Instagram.
Over posting means your followers think you’re spamming them, under posting means
your followers forget about you.

7. Quality of pictures

Images are content too. The quality of images you use says a lot about your brand.
Putting up blurry pictures comes across as unprofessional. No one wants to see images
that are cluttered.

8. Private Account

Having a private brand account means limiting your followers by a HUGE number.
Don’t…it’s only going to take forever to build brand awareness.

2. Security and private consult

A bulletproof password is more powerful than you thinkThis is point zero. This should be
as obvious as it sounds to check Instagram security. Yet, I still see many examples of
weak, logical, unconsidered passwords just to be remembered. This is a mistake you can
easily regret, after, your account gets hacked. Once and for all, let’s make it clear. Use
long passwords that include at least six numbers, capitals and various characters in an
inconsequent order. This is the most basic step you have to do. Also, using a password
manager is a great idea not to forget those strong passwords.

17
Now we can move on to the first step.

1. Don’t get lazy reading the ‘Privacy & Safety Center’ guidelines

Yes, it is not going to be a late night reading in the bed, but it still worth it. It contains the
most important information about Instagram’s security and privacy. It covers detailed
information on visibility, safety tips, blocking, secure photo sharing, tips for parents and
platform policy. You can take a look at it here: Instagram Privacy & Safety Center.

2. Disable location sharing

Sharing your location is never a wise idea. When others can see your current position,
especially if it is a sensitive one like your home or workplace, unwanted criminals can get
access to it and get the details of your location. This can alter your privacy and can lead
to identity theft. If you have already shared your location, check it and remove all your
previous geotags from your pictures.

3. Don’t use third-party applications

You’ve probably come across third-party apps since they are very common for offering
great features like photo editor apps, follower analyzers, etc. These applications usually
have access to your private profile information. For your privacy and security, only allow
authorized applications from the most trusted developers. It helps to improve Instagram
security as well.

4. Avoid suspicious profiles

One of the most common phishing attacks on Instagram is still the fake profile scam.
Fortunately, with a little awareness, you can easily identify a fake profile. First, a profile
with a suspicious profile picture starts commenting on your photos and starts following
your profile. They usually offer “free s*x” or “quick money making” and even “free
followers” with a spammy, shortened URL link in the profile description. Needless to

18
say, they are usually bots. If you are aware enough, and not clicking on every link you
come across, you will avoid these type of phishing attacks. Also, blocking and reporting
these fake accounts to Instagram is necessary to get rid of them fast.

5. Mind the shortened URLs

Shortened URLs usually goes hand-in-hand with fake profiles. You can find these URLs
in the profile description of fake accounts. Some of these links can be extremely
dangerous and could potentially lead to phishing attacks and data theft. You are not
supposed to click on any of them no matter what they promise or how attractive they are.

6. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-Factor Authentication also called for multiple step verification is a process to double
check your identity when you log into an email or social media account. This feature is
available on almost every social network platform by now. The Two-Factor
Authenticationformula requires “something you know” (username and password) and
“something you have” (mobile phone) every time you want to log into your account. It
usually requires a verification code that arrives at your phone after you entered the login
details. Although it doesn’t take a much extra effort to implement, 2FA is considered one
of the best methods to keep your Instagram account secure.

7. Consider going into private mode

Although sharing your photos publicly might seem like an attractive way to get attention,
but sometimes it’s not the smartest move. It depends mostly on what type of photos you
share. If you upload more like personal photos of your life, home, work, different
activities, and vacations, you might want to consider going into the private mode to share
your photos only with people whom you give access to it

19
8.Security starts with awareness

By implementing the steps mentioned above, you can make your Instagram account
significantly safer. However, Instagram security is not everything. There are other factors
to consider such as the security and privacy of your email and other social media
accounts, network security as well as your offline and cloud storage security. For
example, encrypting your files or setting up a VPN is always a good idea if you want
extra safe.

20
METHODOLOGY

Methodology is the systematic theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of

study. It comprises the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles
associated with a branch of knowledge typically, it is a encomposes concepts such as
paradigm , theoretical model, phases and quantitative techniques .

A methodology does not set out to provide solutions –its therefore, not the same as a
method. Instead, a methodology offers the theoretical underpinning for understanding
which method, or best practises can be applied to specific case, for example, to calculate
a specific result.

SAMPLE SIZE

The research methodology the aim of this research paper is to find the various factors
that affect users of instagram to find the various risks and challenges faced by users. In
order to reach the aim a structured questionnaire was sent to 20 users who also use the
Intagram.. The respondents were categorised on the basis of gender, age , status,
occupiation. Out of 20 people 18 members are responded to the questionnaire . The
sample size of this research is 18 and used questionnaire method.

PRIMARY DATA

In primary data collection, the data is collected using methods such as questionnaires.
Primary data basically includes the data collected by interacting with people. By
conducting the survey through questionnaires the data is presented in forms of tables.

SECONDARY DATA

The process to collect the secondary data is much easier than primary data collection. It is
here that the information is collected through the way of using sources that already
present. This research methodology needs adequate amount of time for the selection of
precise as well as apt and relevant data as per the demand of research.

Mission
Instagram is a mobile, desktop, and internet-based photo-sharing application and
service that follows users to share pictures and videos either publicly, or privately to pre-
approved followers, it was created by Kevin systrom and mike Krieger and launched in
October 2010 as a free mobile app exclusively for the IOS operating System. Instagram is
a free, online photo-sharing application and social network platform that was acquired by
Facebook in 2012.

Instagram allows users to edit and upload photos and short videos through a
mobile app. Users can add a caption to each of their posts and use hashtags and location-
based geotags to index these posts and make them searchable by other users within the
app. Each post by a user appears on their followers' Instagram feeds and can also be
viewed by the public when tagged using hashtags or geotags. Users also have the option
of making their profile private so that only their followers can view their posts.

As with other social networking platforms, Instagram users can like, comment on and
bookmark others' posts, as well as send private messages to their friends via the
Instagram Direct feature. Photos can be shared on one or several other social media sites -
- including Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr -- with a single click.

24
Instagram is not only a tool for individuals, but also for businesses. The photo-sharing
app offers companies the opportunity to start a free business account to promote their
brand and products. Companies with business accounts have access to
free engagement and impression metrics. According to Instagram's website, more than 1
million advertisers worldwide use Instagram to share their stories and drive business
results. Additionally, 60% of people say they discover new products through the app.

25
ORIGIN & HISTORY

Instagram began development in San Francisco, when Kevin Systrom and Mike
Krieger chose to focus their multi-featured HTML5 check-in project, Burbn, on mobile
photography. As Krieger reasoned, Burbn became too similar to Foursquare, and both
realized that it had gone too far. Burbn was then pivoted to become more focused on
photo-sharing. The word Instagram is a portmanteau of instant camera and telegram.

On March 5, 2010, Systrom closed a $500,000 seed funding round with Baseline
Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz while working on Burbn. Josh Riedel joined the
company in October as Community Manager, Shayne Sweeney joined in November as an
engineer, and Jessica Zollman joined as a Community Evangelist in August 2011.

Kevin Systrom posted the first photo to Instagram on July 16, 2010. The photo shows a
dog in Mexico and Systrom's girlfriend's foot; the photo has been enhanced using
Instagram's X-PRO2 filter. On October 6, 2010, the Instagram iOS app was officially
released through the App Store.

In February 2011, it was reported that Instagram had raised $7 million in Series
A funding from a variety of investors, including Benchmark Capital, Jack Dorsey, Chris
Sacca (through Capital fund), and Adam D'Angelo. The deal valued Instagram at around
$20 million.

On April 3, 2012, Instagram was released for Android phones, and it was downloaded
more than one million times in less than one day.

In March 2012, The Wall Street Journal reported that Instagram was raising a new round
of financing that would value the company at $500 million, details that were confirmed
the following month, when Instagram raised $50 million from venture capitalists with a
$500 million valuation. The same month, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in
cash and stock, with a plan to keep the company independently managed.

26
Britain's Office of Fair Trading approved the deal on August 14, 2012, and on August
22, 2012, the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. closed its investigation, allowing the
deal to proceed. On September 6, 2012, the deal between Instagram and Facebook was
officially closed.

The deal, which was made just prior to Facebook's scheduled IPO, cost about a quarter of
Facebook's cash-on-hand, according to figures documented at the end of 2011. The deal
was for a company characterized as having "lots of buzz but no business model", and the
price was contrasted with the $35 million Yahoo! paid for Flickr in 2005. Mark
Zuckerberg noted that Facebook was "committed to building and growing Instagram
independently", in contrast to its past practices. According to Wired, the deal netted
Systrom $400 million based on his ownership stake in the business. The exact purchase
price was $300 million in cash and 23 million shares of stock.

In November 2012, Instagram launched website profiles, allowing anyone to see users'
feeds from their web browsers. However, the website interface was limited in
functionality, with notable omissions including the lack of a search bar, a news feed, and
the ability to upload photos. In February 2013, the website was updated to offer a news
feed, and in June 2015, the website was redesigned to offer bigger photos.

On October 22, 2013, during the Nokia World event held in Abu Dhabi, Systrom
confirmed the upcoming release of the official Instagram app for Windows Phone, after
pressure from Nokia and the public to develop an app for the platform. The app was
released as a beta version on November 21, 2013, and was lacking the ability to record
and upload video, though an Instagram spokesperson stated that "We're not finished, and
our team will continue developing the Windows Phone app to keep releasing features and
bringing you the best Instagram possible". In April 2016, Instagram upgraded the app
to Windows 10 Mobile, adding support for video and direct messages, followed by later
updates in October 2016 that extended the app to Windows 10 personal computers and
tablets.

27
The Android app has received two major exclusive updates. The first, introduced in
March 2014, cut the size of the app by half and added significant improvements to
performance and responsiveness on a wide variety of Android devices. The Verge wrote
that the development team had tested the app on devices not for sale in the United States,
particularly low-end models like Samsung Galaxy Y, in an effort to improve the app for
its userbase located outside the U.S. Engineering manager Philip McAllister told The
Vergethat "More than 60 percent of our users are outside the US, and Android covers
roughly half of total Instagram users".

The second update, introduced in April 2017, added an offline mode, in which content
previously loaded in the news feed is available without an Internet connection, and users
can comment, like, save media, and unfollow users, all of which will take effect once the
user goes back online. At the time of the announcement, it was reported that 80% of
Instagram's 600 million users are located outside the U.S., and while the aforementioned
functionality was live at announcement, Instagram also announced its intention to make
more features available offline "in the following months", and that they were "exploring
an iOS version". Since the app's launch it had used the Foursquare API technology to
provide named location tagging. In March 2014, Instagram started testing switching the
technology to using Facebook Places.

Announced in March 2016 and taking place in June, Instagram switched from a strictly
chronological oldest-to-newest news feed to a new, algorithm-based feed. The change
received "widespread outcry" following Instagram's March announcement, but Instagram
stated that the feature would help users discover lost posts, writing that "You may be
surprised to learn that people miss on average 70 percent of their feeds. As Instagram has
grown, it's become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This
means you often don't see the posts you might care about the most. To improve your
experience, your feed will soon be ordered to show the moments we believe you will care
about the most."

28
On May 11, 2016, Instagram revamped its design, adding a black-and-white theme for
the app and a more abstract, "modern" and colorful icon. Rumors of a redesign first
started circulating in April, when The Verge received a screenshot from a tipster, but at
the time, an Instagram spokesperson simply told the publication that "This is a design test
only".

29
OBJECTIVES
If you'd like to advertise on Instagram, there are several ad objectives you can choose.

 Brand awareness
 Reach
 Traffic (for clicks to your website or to the app store for your app)
 App installs
 Engagement (for post engagement only)
 Video views
 Conversions (for conversions on your website or in your app)
 Lead generation
 This network is ideal for people who enjoy taking photos, record short videos
and share them with other users. In addition, this application can be
associated with Facebook and Twitter: a photo uploaded on Instagram can be
automatically shared on these other social networks.
 Instagram is based on a system of sharing photos and videos. It resembles
Facebook and Twitter, since it takes elements of both. Facebook takes the
idea of sharing images, while Twitter takes the notion of followers.
 The main disadvantage of this application is that it is only available for the
Android, iOS and Windows Mobile operating systems.
 This means that users who do not have these operating systems must access
the web version, which is not as interactive as the application.

30
Advantages

 massive

Instagram is a social network that has grown widely in recent years. Between Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram, the latter is the one with the highest number of active users per
month.

 A picture is a worth of thousand words

The main feature of Instagram is that it allows you to share photos. Sometimes the
images are able to convey more information than a written text.

Images have the ability to evoke emotions and feelings. They are also more attractive
than other forms of interaction. This establishes a much more effective communication
system among users.

 Ideal for virtual stores

Instagram has now become a marketing tool. Many virtual stores employ this platform to
promote their products. Thanks to this platform, the relationship between sellers and
buyers is more interactive.

 Privacy and security

One of the most important advantages of Instagram is its privacy and security policy.

Their use is limited to persons over 13 years old, in order to protect children from certain
contents that may not be suitable for them.

31
In addition, it can be established that the publications are private. When choosing this
option the other users who want to see the photos, videos or any other element of the
profile should send a follow-up request to the user with the private account. This user has
the authority to accept or reject such request.

Finally, if a user is violating the conditions of Instagram or if it violates the security of

other members of the network, it can be blocked and will not be able to see the
publications of those who have blocked it.

 Free

Like other social networks, the Instagram service is free. Neither the subscription nor the
download of the application generate additional costs to the derivatives for the payment
of Internet service.

 Sharing Options

Instagram lets you share photos and videos that can be created directly from the
application, or can be uploaded from the memory of the mobile device.

The application also offers the option of sharing these files on other social networks, such
as Twitter and Facebook.

 Communication medium

Being a social network, Instagram is a means of communication. In addition to

publishing multimedia files, this application offers instant messaging services.

32

The Instagram social network encourages people's artistic skills. Thanks to this
application many users are more aware of the fundamental elements of
photography: angles, planes, focus, among others.

external audits of company based on the important key factors such as market
share, brands value, customer statisfaction, financial position, marketing strategy,
competitors, econonmic conditions and others.

Fundamentally, Instagram is the mobile application, which I introduced by the

Facebook and it is used for the sharing of images.the clients use it for capturing
the pictures and share it to other people and people can also use it for the
moments of world the user get it done for the toning of pictures with the
selections of the multiple filters. Most of the people want to share their photos and

36
UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENTS:

 The much beloved smartphone picture snapping app, Instagram, allows its users
to take or share photos within a community that is eager to see the next uploaded
photo from those they follow as well as aim high to reach the popular page.

 It is almost too easy to pretend to be a skilled photographer or for those that have
true skills, a great place to receive recognition. People simply double tap the
images they like and poof, the likes build up in seconds, it is quite fun to watch
and see what your community enjoys the most from the photos you share.

 The only thing it seems to lack is the ability to see instant stats on your progress
and how much you rank within the Instagram community, however, there is a site
that can do just that for you and provide you with your rank, most influenced
followers and even photos of your achievements can be saved and shared on
Instagram.

 Since Instagram is partnered with Statigram you can easily download your photos
to the site by allowing permission, it only takes a few minutes before you are able
to explore your more detailed reports that the initial Instagram application does
not have, once it is ready you will receive an e-mail of created photos that show
the date and first photo you shared on Instagram, as well as your rank, who you
interact with the most and more. You will be able to save them in case you want
to share them with your Social Networks or on Instagram itself.

 The traditional way of spending big junks on marketing and advertisement is

slowly taking a bank bench, thanks to the technological revolution. This trend has
been replaced by the more proactive methods of social media marketing and here
are the few objectives you can achieve from using Instagram as a Marketing Tool.

37
 Social media is one of the most convenient clubs that most people convene to in
recent days. It is important to understand that business can now be initiated
online, and with a large pool of followers on Instagram, its use is definitely bound
to allow you reach the masses, a key part of a successful marketing strategy.

 With most of the deals going trendy and casual, use of Instagram allows you to
speak the language of your followers, which is definitely more appealing than that
email sent to their address which they simply rubbish or delete once they have
seen the subject. This social platform allows you to learn the language your
clients are using and express your ideas in the same for, putting you on the same
level and in similar thought.

 Instagram is more successful in that you can have your customers spreading the
word for you, this is definitely one of the best breakthroughs of this social
platform. A conversation ensues between the sales agent and another user at a
different end, then we have more and more people checking and speaking their
minds, and they have friends also, and this is an infectious program that goes viral
through the circles

 All said and done, Instagram is a flexible way to sell your product. You simply
check on what people’s feeling are from what they say and there you are
reorienting yourself to their needs, so you always stay trendy at all times.

38
FUTURE PLANS

with over 400 million active users and 40 billion shared photos, Instagram is the rising
star of the social media platform. It has been estimated that the engagement of users on
Instagram is seven times higher than that on Twitter and Facebook. What started as a
platform meant exclusively for photo sharing has now been supporting videos and stories
as well. Instagram is not only on the rise but is constantly evolving too in order to reach
up to the expectations of the general users and meet their demands. Instagram along with
Snapchat is being labeled as the future of social media… but what makes them so
promising?

In this article, we will take a look at some of the important features and reasons that make
this platform the huge success that it is today.

For a technology or any invention to succeed and make it big in the industry, it needs to
be smart enough to cater to the ever-changing demands and needs of the users all the
while reinventing and re-evolving itself. Instagram has been doing just that since it came
into existence in October 2010. With what started as a mobile app for photo sharing soon
outgrew itself and began supporting videos as well. Initially, it followed the suit of Vine
and supported short videos only with 15 seconds being the upper limit. This trend was
soon overridden and replaced with videos that can now last for up to 60 seconds. Video
sharing is considered to be the future of social media and Instagram was quick to adapt to
this rising trend and emerge as a forerunner of the social media industry.

On top of it all, the social media star recently introduced stories as well where users can
now share and upload stories, a concept that trickled down from SnapChat. Facebook and
Twitter are the giants and the pioneers of the social media industry. This not only works
for their benefit but against them as well. Some of the reasons why Instagram was such a
hit with all the users have been discussed below.

39
b .functional profile

 Finance

When Facebook bought mobile photo-sharing app Instagram for around $1 billion in cash
and stock in April 2012, Instagram was less than two years old and had no revenue. The
deal was met with widespread mockery, including a segment on “The Daily Show.” But
by December 2014, Citigroup analysts were saying that Instagram was worth $35 billion.

Instagram, Facebook and Advertising

Instagram makes its money from advertising, just like Facebook. Facebook doesn’t break
out Instagram’s financials, but in 2016, about 97% of Facebook's third-quarter revenue
was derived from ads. Ad revenue for the quarter was $6.82 billion, a 59% increase from
the same quarter the year before, according to the company's latest quarterly report.

A portion of that revenue almost certainly came from Instagram, which introduced paid
advertising on its service in 2013. Since then, its advertisers have included Nike Inc.
(NKE), General Electric (GE) and Walt Disney Co. (DIS).

The Inexorable Growth of Mobile

Instagram’s strength, and the main reason Facebook purchased it, is its devoted – and
growing – mobile user base. As of April 2017, Instagram reports over 600 million daily
active users according to its website. 80% of Instagram's users are outside of the US.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the app is on its way to reaching 1 billion
people.See also: Facebook's Instagram Surpasses 600M Users (FB)

40
When it bought Instagram, analysts criticized Facebook for having little presence on
mobile phones. Mobile has been a growing segment of Facebook’s advertising,
accounting for 84% of ad revenues in the third quarter of 2016, compared to 78% from
the same quarter in 2015.

Advertising on Instagram is becoming increasingly sophisticated. One of the features

allows advertisers to show slideshows and link to sites outside Instagram. Its carousel ads
“bring the potential of multi-page print campaigns to mobile phones – with the added
benefit of taking people to a website to learn more,” according to Instagram’s business
blog.

Instagram Leverages Brand

That brand advertising has thus far eluded some of Facebook’s biggest web competitors.
The blog Stratechery has identified dependence on click-through ads and failure to build
a business in brand advertising as one of Google’s biggest weaknesses. If Instagram can
win a significant part of that market, it would become, as Zuckerberg predicts, a
meaningful business in its own right.

The Bottom Line

Like many big names in social media, Instagram started as a fun idea without a clear path
to profit. Similar to its parent company, Facebook, advertising has become the key to its
monetization. Because it is fundamentally a photo sharing app, it is a natural platform for
branded advertising. Many iconic companies whose brand visuals are immediately
recognizable, such as Nike, have eagerly embraced the platform.

.Budget 2018, it seems.

In an effort to reach out to younger Singaporeans, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has
paid for over 50 social media "influencers" to post on Instagram to promote the Budget
process.

At least 30 posts by these young social media users have popped up since December last
year, asking viewers to visit the Budget website to learn more about the Budget, or to
share their feedback with government feedback unit Reach on its website and at its
physical "listening posts" this month.

Budget Day this year falls on Feb 19.

The influencers have anywhere from 1,300 to 35,000 followers on Instagram. Some post
photos of themselves at the listening posts while others share photos of their daily lives
with captions about how the Budget relates to them. The posts are tagged as sponsored
posts.

For example, blogger and property agent Cheng Kai Ting, who has about 21,800
followers, wrote: "Before we penned down our signatures to seal our union for
#KenTingWeds, there was a lot of planning done to make sure we worked within our
budget and planned our finances well for our future together.

42
"Similarly, the Singapore government has to plan the #SGBudget ahead to help us
Singaporeans and support our businesses in the next Financial Year, and our President
will pen down her signature as assent for the enactment of the Supply Bill."

When contacted, an MOF spokesman told The Straits Times on Wednesday (Jan 17) that
the campaign is estimated to reach 225,000 users on Instagram. She did not want to say
how much the ministry is spending on the campaign except that it was in accordance with
market rates.

Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat to deliver Budget 2018 on Feb 19

"Given the significance of the Budget to all Singaporeans, MOF taps a mix of
communications channels and platforms" to gather feedback and raise awareness, she
said, noting that many Singaporeans, especially younger ones, obtain information
online."This is an effective way to engage with youth participants," she said, but did not
elaborate on how the ministry tracks the campaign's outcome.MOF ran a similar
influencer campaign for Budget 2017, but on a smaller scale. This year, it worked with a
marketing company called StarNgage.

43
StarNgage chief community officer Terrence Ngu said the ministry got in touch last
November to discuss a campaign for Budget 2018. His agency had worked with MOF
earlier last year on posts about the GST U-Save rebates. The latest Budget campaign,
which lasts for over a month, involves over 50 influencers, said Mr Ngu. They are
expected to deliver one Instagram post each and share the campaign link on their profiles.

He said they receive token remuneration after completing the tasks, though he did not
specify the amount. The influencers they work with are considered personable individuals
with an "above average" number of followers on social media, he said. The StarNgage
website states that users must have at least 1,000 followers to qualify as preferred
influencers.

Mr Ngu also said that the main performance indicator of the campaign will be awareness,
measured by the potential reach of influencers - their follower count - and the likes and
comments on their posts. It is unclear yet if the strategy can achieve its aim of rousing
interest among young Singaporeans about the Budget process. While the individual posts
have garnered hundreds of "likes", there are far fewer comments left, usually fewer than
20.

But stay-at-home mother Shanel Lim, 26, who has about 11,500 followers, said she feels
posts like hers can help engage the younger generation, "as nowadays not everyone reads
the newspapers or watches the news on TV or online".Dr Brian Lee, head of the
communications programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, said the
ministry’s media strategy to reach younger people is a savvy one, though social media
has its limitations.

“If it’s about awareness, it will be effective. But it may not promote understanding or
changes in attitude or behaviour,” he said, adding that this may explain the low comment
rate.“But to generate awareness is a good start. Younger Singaporeans will have their
way to search for pertinent information once they are aware of the issue,” he said.

 Instagram posts engagement vs. Facebook

Personal account of instagram

As I’ve built my career coaching business, I’ve spent a bit of time thinking about brand.
No, brand isn’t a dirty word. And yes, I’ve thought about how to build my own personal
brand. I thought about it back when I launched my career coaching business and more
recently when I opened my new ghostwriting and copywriting house, which supports
influencers and companies with their content creation.

I asked myself: What do I want to say? How do I want to present my best self to the
world? Honestly, these are questions I ask myself every time I write, speak, tweet — and
yes, post to Instagram.

Of course, I’ve also thought about your brand. I’ve wondered what makes one person’s
brand explode while another flounders. I’ve watched as my friends’ businesses take off
— and then, sadly, some of them don’t.

Now, I’m not going to claim Instagram is some magic potion your clients will drink. But
I do believe — if used correctly—it can be an incredibly powerful tool.

45
 Step 1: Turn Your Why Into Followers

If you don’t have a why, it’s time to dig deep. Your Instagram account should be a
reflection of your brand’s essence. Think of it this way: If you don’t know why you’re
building a business, your clients won’t know why either — that is, why they should
invest their time in you. If you don’t know why you’re posting to Instagram, your
followers won’t know why they should follow you.

Stop right now. Think of what you want your personal brand to look like. What are five
words that come to mind? Is there a universal theme? Is your goal to help others? To
spread a specific message.

Your followers — and later, your clients — will be the people who get your why. They
will be asking the same questions, have similar concerns, and will be compelled to keep
clicking to find the answers. Your posts should dig at the why, getting at the heart of your
brand. A lot of this means being familiar with your customer’s pain — the problem that
you’re there to solve.

 Step 2: Refine Your Voice

When I launched my new ghostwriting company, I knew I needed to refine my voice for
this specific new venture. My voice wouldn’t change, of course (I’m still the same
person!), but I needed to learn the language of this new business. I also needed to
surround myself with people who understood both my voice and vision.

If you’re an entrepreneur, who are your clients? If you’re an influencer, who are your
fans? And what might they think if they looked at your Instagram account?

46
Is your voice clear? In this case, your “voice” is speaking in pictures, video, and text.
Yes, Instagram is not all about the pictures (shocking, I know!). All three of these
mediums work together to define your brand. Stay on message. Be loud and clear.

And no matter what you do, don’t try to be someone else. Early on into my career
coaching practice, I had a career coach copy a bunch of my content and claim it as hers.
While it’s tough to find your voice (and I get it!), people will feel when you’re being
disingenuous

Step 3:Use Hashtags (But Use Them Appropriately!)

You have your why. You have your voice. And, you still don’t have many followers.
This is where we get down to the nitty-gritty. It’s time you understand how to use
hashtags. Don’t abuse this privilege. We’re not looking for 500 hashtags per post. We’re
looking for the key hashtags used in your industry.

Where to begin?

To start: Look for other similar accounts. Who are the influencers in your industry, and
what hashtags are they using? Click on the hashtags, and hop into that rabbit hole. Are
you speaking the language yet? If your goal is to become a fitness guru, for instance,
you must learn the language of the fitness world.

My publishing house has supported clients in increasing their social media followers, and
we swear by hashtags!

47
 Step 4: Interact. Promote. Post.

OK, so step four is actually three mini steps. But I can assure you that they’re all
related. You’re busy. We know this. As you look at your never-ending to-do list (I say this
as I look down at my own to-do list), it can be difficult to consider making time for your
Instagram. But spending time commenting on posts, particularly those within your field,
is so important as you build your brand.

Those key influencers in your industry I mentioned earlier? Interact with them. Don’t be
afraid to reach out. Comment, like, and message.Speaking of message, consider how else
you can get your message out there. Do you already have an active Facebook
community? A blog? Don’t be afraid to directly promote your Instagram account on other
platforms. You don’t want to oversaturate, but you do want to let people know you —
and your brand — exist.

Post frequently. At least 3-5 times a week, if you can (though many influencers post
daily). This will not only keep your followers engaged, it will help you to refine your
why and your voice — and in the end, your personal brand.

Your personal brand isn’t some inauthentic and forced measure. Your brand is an
expression of you. It’s your vision, your voice.

What better place to start building than Instagram?

recruitment process I ntagram

I did two internships at Facebook, back in 2014 and 2015. For the first one, I got an email
from my future manager sometime in May, saying that he and the team learned about my
published project and my app on Google Play, and whether I would be interested in
helping the team on a related topic. I said ‘sure’, and he scheduled 3 interviews for the
following day, with him, with his manager, and an engineer from their team. The team
wanted someone for smartphone performance, so most questions were around that topic. I
was working in the area for a few years, so I felt pretty comfortable discussing and
answering their questions. Then I got another call from my future manager the following
day asking if I could join the team in 2 weeks. They expedited the background check, and
I joined in June.

The second intern had a simpler interview process. I got two interviews. The interviewers
were my teammates, and knew my coding background pretty well, so there was no much
pressure. Basic questions that you can find on geeksforgeeks.org or ‘Cracking the Coding
Interview’.

So it seems like if you have something little to offer, the interview process can be very
smooth. Within 3–4 weeks and you may be joining a team, and working on something
with a potential impact you never imagined possible. I still remember 2 other interns
from my class did a function allowing users add the French flag to profile backgrounds as
a hackathon, and literally it was available to more than 1 billion users overnight ! Crazy!
Back in late 2011,a little known mobile app that went byname of instagstram ,had a
healthy butStill relatively small legion of about 10millon users.fast forward 5 years ,and
that little legion has ballooned into an army of over 300 million active monthly users

51
13% of internet users worldwide are using it

51% of them are male

49%of them are female

A massive 70%of them are logging in at leaste once a day

The average user spends 257 minutes every months looking at the app

In the U.S.alone,53%of adults aged 18 ,-29 are using

Instagram,a very significant portion of young professionals and young job seekers

And 30%of U.S.teens consider Instagram to be he most important social network,

Its also estimated that instaram will generate about $700 million in revenue this year
alone and around $5.8 billion in 2020.

And with an audience of potential employees that large and that active ,I think its high
time you started seriously considering Instagram as a viable recruiting tool, don’t you.

So today we are going to explore the recruitment –related merits of the social app and
discuss why getting your company on Instaram might just be the best thing you ever do
for your fuure recruitment efforts.

Marketing

Across the globe ,there are over 800 million Instagrammers-more than 500 million of
whom use Instagram every single day, sharing more than 250 million piece of content
each day, These are huge members .And no matter who your audience is-age
,gender,occupation,anything-you’ll be sure to reach them through Instagram . Boasting
over 300 million daily active users,Instagram has huge potential for marketers. But the
potential in Instagram lies more in the user behavior than the numbers.

CHAPTER- 3

CONCEPTIONAL PROFILE

53
A.THEORETICAL ASPECT OF THE ‘ CONCEPT’

Problems of instagram

The first thing to do is check to see if Instagram is down. Although it rarely happens for
everyone at the same time, there are short periods where Instagram is offline due to a
problem with Instagram servers.

You can check to see if this is happening on Twitter and on Down Detector. On both
sites, you will see user reports of Instagram problems and exactly what they are seeing.
There is no official Instagram Help Twitter account, so don’t share any details with an
Instagram account on Twitter if you are looking for help. You can check to see if the
official Instagram accountposted any status updates about downtime, but this doesn’t
always happen.

How to Fix Instagram Account Problems in 2018

On August 14, 2018 Instagram acknowledged a problem accessing accounts. They are
investigating the error and issue, saying, “We are aware that some people are having
difficulty accessing their Instagram accounts.”
If you get an email from Instagram saying you changed your email account, look for the
link that says “revert this change” and click it.

Once that is done you need to change your Instagram password. You can use a tool
likeLastpass to do this.
If needed you can use the details on this page to restore access to your Instagram account
and link to a new email address.
You need to revoke access to third-party apps and you may want to enable two-factor
authentication.
Instagram also has a dedicated team working on this issue. If you contact them for help,
you will hear back soon.

54
How to Fix Instagram Problems

What’s the first thing to do when you have Instagram problems? Thankfully we have a
short list of three things you can do to fix most Instagram problems in under 5 minutes.

Step 1. Restart your iPhone, Android or tablet.

Hold the power button and turn it off. Wait at least 15 seconds on the iPhone and a
minute on Android phones before you turn the device back on.
Step 2. Uninstall Instagram and Reinstall.
The next thing to try is deleting Instagram from your phone or tablet and reinstalling it.
You need to know your password since you will need to sign in again for this to
work. Your photos and profile are safe on Instagram.
On the iPhone or iPad, hold down on the app until you see a small x. Tap on the x to
uninstall the app. Find Instagram in the app store and reinstall it.
On Android you need to go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications ->
Instagram. Tap on Uninstall. Go to the Google Play Store and find Instagram to
reinstall
.
Step 3. Check Your Internet Connection. You should try on cellular and on WiFi. You
can also try to turn Airplane mode on and then off. This can reset issues with your
connection. You may want to try this before you uninstall the app.

How to Fix Instagram Posting Problems

You may run into a problem posting photos to Instagram or even leaving comments and
liking photos. If you’ve been on a spree of uploading, liking and commenting, you may
have bumped into an anti-spam limit that is meant to protect the community.

55
INSTAGRAM POSTING PROMBLEMS

Check your signal to see if you can do other things online. If you can access other
websites and apps then you may need to continue troubleshooting Instagram. If you have
issues with other services, or they are slow, you can try connecting to WiFi or turning
airplane mode on and off.

The next thing to do is see if you can upload from a second Instagram account. If you
don’t have one of those you should try to sign into Instagram using a browser on your
phone or computer and then change something small in your bio. This can fix the
problem and allow you to start posting to Instagram again.
If Instagram crashes when you try to upload a photo, you should restart your phone to see
if that solves the problem. If all else fails, you can contact Instagram for more help and
see if there is a problem with your account.

How to fix Instagram login problems.

When you can’t login to Instagram it’s a major problem for you, but it is something that
you can easily fix. The first thing to do is re-type your username and password and
attempt to log in again. You can also try this on your computer. In the app on iPhone or
Android, you can choose to send an SMS or Log in with Facebook on Android or to send
Login link on iPhone. This will help you log in with the right credentials easily.

A common issue that you run into when you try to reset your Instagram password is that
you don’t have the right email account linked. If you have Facebook and Instagram you
can reset your password with Facebook, which is an easy option for many users.

If your Instagram password reset email doesn’t work, you can try sending it again, and
then make sure you don’t add any extra spaces to the link if you copy and paste it.

How to Fix Instagram Problems with Facebook Permissions

56
If you accidentally delete Instagram from your Facebook account you may not be able to
post from Instagram to Facebook. You can try these steps to re-connect Facebook and
Instagram.

1. Delete Facebook and Instagram from your phone.

2. Go to Facebook Settings and remove Instagram permissions.
3. Install Facebook and Instagram, then connect the two services.
If your photos are showing up on the Newsfeed, Facebook and Instagram are aware of the
problem and working on a fix.

If friends can’t see your Instagram posts on Facebook you may need to change these
Facebook Instagram permissions.
In cases where you see an error that your Instagram Photo album is full on Facebook, you
can change the name of your current Instagram album on Facebook and a new one will
appear when you share to Facebook again.

How to Fix Instagram Tagging Problems

There are a number of Instagram tagging problems that include not being able to tag
friends in photos and problems with blocked Instagram hashtags that can prevent your
image from appearing in searches.
If you can tag someone in your photo, but they are no longer tagged later they may be
removing the tag. You can untag yourself from a photo by tapping on the photo, then on
your name and then on More Options where you will see an option for Remove Me from
Photo.

When you cannot add more hashtags to a post or paste in a large number of hashtags you
may need to limit this to 25 or fewer hashtags per comment or post. Using too many
hashtags is likely a spam flag and Instagram may be blocking this.

How to Appeal Your Instagram Account Disabled

57
If you log in to Instagram and see that your account is disabled you have broken
a community guideline or the terms of use. Or at least your account raised the flags
that triggered this.
When you log in you may be able to appeal an Instagram disabled punishment. There will
be directions in your app to do this from your phone. There is no guarantee that you can
recover your account if this happens to you.

Instagram Comment Problems

You may need to update your Instagram profile to fix some problems.

There are Instagram comment problems where you cannot comment on popular
Instagram accounts with a newer account or you cannot tag multiple users in the same
comment.

This is all due to Instagram cracking down on spammers. If your profile looks like a
spammer based on your profile picture or bio link and you are constantly tagging people
or only commenting on popular accounts you may run into comment problems.

You cannot leave a comment that includes;

 More than 5 @ mentions

 More than 30 hashtags
 That is the same comment multiple times (even emoji)
If you have an error commenting on Instagram, remove a few hashtags or @ mentions.

Louise M shares a strategy to gain back the ability to comment. It boils down to use
Instagram like a normal user, not a spammer. Check out the information towards the
bottom of the post, but ignore the instructions to reset your iPhone network settings.

How to Fix Error: You Can’t Follow Anymore People on Instagram

58
If you try to follow a new person and you see the error, “You can’t follow any more
people.”, you are already following 7,500 people. That is the maximum number of
accounts you can follow on Instagram.

To follow a new account you will need to unfollow some of your current friends on the
service. This is to combat spam on the service. If you see people following more than
7,500 people they were doing it before the new rules took effect.

What to Do if Someone is Threatening to Share Photos or Videos of You

If someone on Instagram is threatening to share photos of you that you don’t want online,
Instagram offers some advice on what to do. This is a serious problem that you need to
deal with in three ways immediately.

 Contact local law enforcement and report this to them.

 Report this person to Instagram.
 Block this person. Depending on your privacy settings, people on Instagram can
see a list of your followers and who you follow. Once you block someone, they
no longer have access to your profile.
Instagram has more on this problem, with input from ConnectSafely, so that you can use
Instagram without this threat.

How to Report Instagram Problems

If you run into other Instagram problems you can’t fix, you can message Instagram from
inside the app. Go to your profile and then tap on settings by tapping three dots on
Android or the gear on iPhone. Scroll down and tap on Report a problem. Choose
Something isn’t working and type out what is wrong with Instagram on your phone.

59
B. APPLICATIONS OF THE CONCEPT IN THE COMPANY

1. How to make Instagram private

If you don’t want your photos to be public and available to be seen by everyone, you can
make your profile private.

To only share your photos with the users you choose, like your friends and family, follow
these steps:

1. Go to your Instagram profile window.

2. Click on the three dots in the right corner.

3. At the bottom you’ll find the Private Account option. Make sure this security setting
is ON. (The button should turn to Blue)

Activating this option means that only those who follow you can see your online photos.

2. Block followers you don’t know

You have created an Instagram account and you want followers. So, you start following
even unknown people that you discover. In return, some of them follow you back.
However, after a while, you may start to receive inappropriate comments on your photos
from those users. Or, on the contrary, they may not interact with your posts in any way
and you feel that they are only lurking.

Even if you have turned on the option to make your photos private, it won’t keep your
posts private from those who are already following you.

60
In this case, you will have to manually remove (Block) the people you don’t want to see
your photos.

To remove one of your followers from your list, follow these steps:

1. Go to your Followers list and check out the people who follow you.

2. Tap on the user that you want to block.

3. From the top-right corner, tap on the menu button.

4. In the new window, choose the Block User option.

3. Keep your Profile Information Private

Don’t expose too much private data in your profile information and especially in your
EDIT PROFILE area.

Don’t write any personal information that could be used against you in the Bio field.

For extra privacy, do not show your Activity Status (the last time you were active on
Instagram), To do this, tap the menu in the upper right corner, scroll down and turn off
the Show Activity Status slider.

4. Don’t expose your location

Another important step you can take to keep yourself secure from identity theft and hide
your account’s credentials from online criminals, is to make sure your location services
for Instagram is turned off.

This is also extremely important for the check-ins made at home, at work or while on a
vacation. There have been plenty of cases of thieves that were tipped off because of
check-ins made on social media. People left for a short holiday, bragged about it online,
and came home to find the place emptied.

61
So, the first step to avoid becoming a victim is, of course, to avoid checking-in certain
photos. You can turn off your Location Services for Instagram through your phone’s
settings, in the Privacy section.

If it’s too late to do that and just want to remove check-ins you already have, this is how
you remove location from Instagram photos:

1. Go to your Instagram photos

2. Find those photos that have a location attached to them and hit the options menu (top
right corner, three vertical dots)

3. Select edit, then click on the location of the photo. If you leave that field empty,
location will be deleted.

5. Manually approve Photo Tags

Let’s just imagine a situation where someone posts an embarrassing photo with you on
Instagram, a photo your friends or family members should not see.

That’s why you should always hand-approve each tag, on any social media platform.

The answer, in this case, is to activate the Instagram option that allows you to manually
add photos you’ve been tagged in to your profile.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Go to your Instagram profile account and access the Photos of You area.

3. Tap the menu button in the top-right corner.

4. Choose the option to add photos manually to your profile.

62
6. Hide Instagram Stories and live videos from specific
people

You should secure your privacy not just for photos or location, but also for your stories.

It’s easy to hide Instagram Stories from specific individuals or deny people the chance to
share your stories with their followers.

Here’s how to hide Stories or control who interacts with them.

1. Go to your profile
2. Tap the menu button and go to the Options menu
3. Scroll to Story Settings and adjust the sliders for maximum privacy.

5. Activate Two-Factor Authentication

63
Two-Factor Authentication works as an extra shield of protection for your account. In
case a cyber criminal somehow finds out your password, they won’t be able to take over
your account, as they will need this second factor to authenticate themselves.

The second factor consists of a unique, time-sensitive code, that you’ll receive via text on
your mobile phone. You’ll have to introduce it any time you’ll want to log-in to your
Instagram account from

The second factor consists of a unique, time-sensitive code, that you’ll receive via text on
your mobile phone. You’ll have to introduce it any time you’ll want to log-in to your
Instagram account from a new device.

Of course, it’s also essential that you set a strong, unique password to your account, so
don’t ignore that aspect either.

Here’s how to turn on the Two-Factor Authentication for Instagram:

1. Open the mobile app and go on your profile.

2. Click on the Options icon (top right of the screen).

3. In the menu you’ll see a shortlink for “Two-Factor Authentication”, click on it.

4. Turn it on and set it up using your mobile phone.

That’s it. From now on, any time you’ll want to log in to your Instagram account from a
new mobile phone, you’ll have to introduce the password and the extra unique code, that
you’ll receive via text message.

As an alternative, in case you ever lose your mobile and don’t have access to your phone
number, you can also use one of the Backup Codes. Each Instagram account has five
unique codes. You’ll find them in the same place where you activate the Two-Factor
Authentication.

64
7. Revoke access to third-party apps

Most likely you logged in using your social account to third party apps. It can be other
social networks, or services that analyse your number of followers, post on your behalf
and so on.

For security and privacy matters, you should only allow access to the apps that are
trustworthy (especially those created directly by the Instagram and Facebook teams).
Remember that those apps have access to your profile and personal information, thus
making you vulnerable.

So take your time and do a spring cleaning. You have to do this in a browser, not directly
in the app. Check every single app that you allowed to access and use your Instagram
account. Revoke access to the ones that you don’t use anymore, look suspicious or you
can’t even remember them.

Here’s how to do that:

1. Log into your Instagram account from the browser (desktop / laptop).

2. On the top right of the screen, click on your profile photo. Select “Edit Profile”.

3. From the Menu, select “Manage Applications”. It will take you to a page from where
you can manage the apps that you authorized to use your Instagram account. Revoke

access to Instagram apps that might make your account vulnerable.

In this area you can even Hide Inappropriate Comments or filter certain words or phrases.

65

There aren’t as many options available for Instagram security as we have on Facebook,
LinkedIn or Twitter, but there are a few and we should use them if we don’t want to face
unwanted surprises.

Remember that by collecting all the available information on us, from multiple online
accounts, cyber criminals are capable of creating a public persona and eventually operate
identity

SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS

89
SUMMARY

Instagram is a free, online photo-sharing application and social network platform that was
acquired by Facebook in 2012.Instagram allows users to edit and upload photos and short
videos through a mobile app. Users can add a caption to each of their posts and use
hashtags and location-based geotags to index these posts and make them searchable by
other users within the app. Each post by a user appears on their followers'
Instagram feeds and can also be viewed by the public when tagged using hashtags or
geotags. Users also have the option of making their profile private so that only their
followers can view their posts.

As with other social networking platforms, Instagram users can like, comment on and
bookmark others' posts, as well as send private messages to their friends via the
Instagram Direct feature. Photos can be shared on one or several other social media sites -
- including Twitter,Facebook and Tumblr -- with a single click.

Instagram is not only a tool for individuals, but also for businesses. The photo-sharing
app offers companies the opportunity to start a free business account to promote their
brand and products. Companies with business accounts have access to
free engagement and impression metrics. According to Instagram's website, more than 1
million advertisers worldwide use Instagram to share their stories and drive business
results. Additionally, 60% of people say they discover new products through the app
Instagram provides a wide range of digital filters that can be applied to users' photos,
including ones that add a vintage or faded look. Other editing features include Lux, an
effect that lightens shadows, darkens highlights and increases contrast, and photo-tuning
tools allow users to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, structure,
straightness and tint. A manual tilt shift and vignette effect can also be added to photos.

90
Taking inspiration from the popular Snapchat app, Instagram introduced a Stories feature
in 2016 that allows users to share moments from their day that disappear after 24 hours.
Instagram Stories includes the ability to incorporate augmented reality-based face filters
and stickers, and the In 2017, Instagram rolled out a feature that allows users to post
multiple photos or videos at once, presented in a carousel format. ability to add text,
drawings, emojis, links and geotags directly to the photo or video. In April 2017,
Instagram Stories recorded 200 million active users, surpassing the active users of
Snapchat, its biggest rival.

Instagram also has a series of add-on apps available. These apps are Boomerang, which
creates custom GIFs; Hyperlapse, which creates time-lapse videos; and Layout, which
creates image collages with multiple images. When installed, these apps can be accessed
directly from the Instagram.
