Conversion Ladder

To convert a bigger unit into a smaller one, we descend the ladder.

Example:
Convert 19 cm into mm.
We are descending once.
We will multiply by 10
So, 19 cm = 19 x ..... = ..... cm

To convert a smaller unit into a bigger one, we ascend the ladder.

Example:
Convert 700 cm into m.
As we are ascending twice.
We will divide by 10 and 10
So, 700 cm = ..... ÷ ..... ÷ ..... = ..... m

ADDITION OF LENGTHS
For example:
Length of the red ribbon is 3 m 23 cm
Length of the blue ribbon is 1 m 42 cm
I will add both of the ribbon.
First, convert both measurements into a single
unit, centimeters.

Take a look into conversion ladder from m into cm,

we are descending twice.

So, the red ribbon

3 m = 3 x 10 x 10 = 300 cm
Thus, 3 m 23 cm = 300 + 23 = 323 cm

And the blue ribbon is

1 m = 1 x 10 x 10 = 100 cm
Thus, 1 m 42 cm = 100 + 42 = 142 cm

Now, add the lengths of the two ribbons.

323
142
_____ +
465 cm

So, the total length of the ribbon is 465 cm

SUBTRACTION OF LENGTHS
For example:
Mom bought 5 m cloth
She wants to cut 1 m 50 cm for my sister’s veil,
how much cloth is left with her?

Let’s convert both measures into cm.

We are ascending twice.

Cloth purchased
5 m = 5 x 10 x 10 = 500 cm
Cloth used
1 m 50 cm = 1 x 10 x 10 = 100 cm + 50 cm
= 150 cm

Now, subtract the measurements.

500
150
_____ -
350 cm

So, 350 cm cloth is left with my mom.
